I really like the crispness of War 2's unit design, but War 1 was really quite neat in terms of design too. Everything stood out in its own way. My favourite thing, though, is the differences. Just having the crossbowman able to shoot a bit farther, but do less damage? That was nice. I also fondly remember playing around with War 1's unit stat editor. Made Demons and Water Elementals last forever, stuff like that. I wonder what can be done with that nowadays.

I'd be curious to see what could be accomplished with the editor as well! There is surprisingly a Warcraft 1 map editor floating around too, which I personally have yet to get working, that allows for some interesting creations by manipulating the Warcraft 1 save files.

Hey, thanks for this great video! I'm a longtime WoW player but I've never really laid eyes on Warcraft 1 beyond the intro movie. This game has held up surprisingly well graphically, it just looks like a cute little indie RTS... which, I suppose, it was. The music is fantastic, too, reminds me of Worms. Your narration style is really clear and concise, I appreciated how you were nostalgic yet remained mindful of those of us who aren't familiar with the game. Great stuff!

Thanks for watching! I'm glad this could provide some insight into Warcraft 1 for you as a WoW player. It's actually quite the interesting experience for me, having grown up with the RTS games but now living in a world where Warcraft and WoW are synonymous for probably 99% of people - I occasionally meet people that are aware of WoW or even play but don't even know the RTS exists! Definitely a lot of great things in Warcraft 1. The controls are really what have aged the most in my opinion, but they aren't as bad as they initially seem. I'll probably do a more proper tutorial video on that soon. Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad you were able to find the video. I hope you continue to enjoy WoW and maybe even check out the RTS titles at some point too 😎

Hola! It seems we have a good number of Warcraft fans in Argentina. I think that Warcraft definitely took on a lighter tone as it progressed game to game, the one light element in Warcraft 1 is a couple of jokey voicelines when you click on the units too much. Warcraft 3 really expanded on that and added a ton of pop culture references and then it went even further in WoW.

The "raise more funds" bit is almost ironically a cute relic of its times, the in-universe narration telling you to pay Blizzard for the full game to continue. Now Blizzard IRL has become that way themselves (and are owned by companies who're even worse than that yet). I personally started with Warcraft 2, sure, but 1 has its own charm of course. Definitely can feel how the soundtrack, for one, takes you to that pioneering era, you can feel its kinship with Dune and C&C but also can feel the beginnings of the tone that'll become signature to Warcraft.
@mickcraftgaming
@mickcraftgaming 3 күн бұрын
The shareware demos of the 90s were great, sad that modern full releases have taken on the "pay more to continue" approach. It is definitely cool to see how the game quickly advanced into what Warcraft 2 would become, which came out just a year later. Amazing what could be accomplished in such a short time in gaming back then. Truly revolutionary times.

I forgot to include Archimonde's subtitles in the final cinematic, so here you go! Archimonde: "Let this scar signify the first blow against the mortal world. From this seal shall arise the doom of men, who, in their arrogance, sought to wield our fire as their own. Blindly they built their kingdoms upon stolen knowledge and conceit. Now they shall be consumed by very flame they thought to control. Let the echoes of doom resound across this wretched world, that all who live may hear them and despair."

The bit of Archimonde scratching his chin and making a realization face has criminally underused reaction image and gif potential. Only seen it used a scant few times, for shame. I always wished there were more traces left of all the fun that happened in Dalaran. I mean, the Archimonde summoning must've left a mark there, as did all the fighting before and since, all the undead bases etc. That's one thing I definitely disagreed with in vanilla WoW, ruins of Dalaran should've been their own zone or subzone comparable in style to the Plaguewood or Isle of Thunder from MoP. No-one can convince me the smattering of townhouse ruins and a tiny islet that got airborne later was all that Dalaran amounted to, WC3 and TFT made it look like a giant metropolis no smaller than Lordaeron at least. Side interesting note, Archimonde is not technically speaking in gibberish tongues, but normal Demonic, with some Eredun style. Obviously it's all made up and not a functioning language, just like Orcish, but all the lines he says mean something. IIRC there was a captioned version of the cinematic. Surprisingly I don't think I ever struggled with this mission - then again, I played on normal difficulty :P. It did, at least, feel like you were fighting the human faction at their best, and the final "throw literally everything at you" last two-minute rush is both good for setting up a climactic final grand showdown with actual risk of losing at the last moment (and feeling like the humans are taking it seriously at least), and gives you a good reason for trying to take out the bases beforehand, to help reduce the final wave if you're having issues beating it. I find it is pretty well-balanced, not a cakewalk yet also friendly enough to the player as opposed to stomping you into the ground right away. I almost wish there was a little more to do with the Legion though, like a couple Pit Lords warping in to help ward off a final (beefed up) giant assault. A final exclamation point to the campaign showing that, yes, the demons are taking over, and to show off their awesome power without having them win the mission for you. P.S. I find it funny that the demons spawning in around Kel'thuzad have a holy-looking effect to the animation. P.P.S. Perhaps engineering the intelligent Scourge like Arthas and Kel'thuzad with utmost loyalty to the Lich King specifically, then taking the Scourge away from the Lich King, was not the smartest part of the plan. You could argue this was the spanner in the works that helped the Legion's eventual loss notably, given how Arthas later performs regarding Tichondrius.

True, Archimonde's speech actually means something and is translated if subtitles are enabled in the game: Let this scar signify the first blow against the mortal world. Now they shall be consumed by very flame they thought to control. Let the echoes of doom resound across this wretched world, that all who live may hear them and despair.

I'd be happy to make a reaction gif of that haha Yeah Dalaran should have been HUGE and easily could have accounted for more space. The way that WoW put it together, it appears as if the mages put a bubble around basically the entire city, what would have made more sense is the mages managed to save a small section of the city and that is what we see in Wrath of the Lich King onward. You are correct that the cinematic is supposed to have captions. Reforged is bugged so that the cinematics play with the menu music in the background, so I've been importing the direct video file of the cinematic, which appears to be caption free - I guess I should have added those back in haha. I definitely found this mission to be significantly easier than the "March of the Scourge" mission from the Human Campaign. More demons would have been cool - I especially think we should have had more Infernals raining it, maybe even have them rain in all over the map, reminiscent of the Warcraft 3 teaser trailer. Demons of the Silver Hand? Perhaps? Demon Paladins coming soon... 😂 The Legion definitely made some serious blunders with the scourge, surprising given how much time they put into it all.

This mission is great buildup for "big bad" and great end for Undead campaign. Too bad we don't get to play around with Kel'Thuzad, I think previous mission and one level from FT are only times we get to drop D&D on some fools. For such important character he get shockingly no game time. [edit] Oh wow, Anniversary stuff! Yeah, it's great place to pause, story of WC III does the same (we're pretty much done with Lorderon plot for while), I actually wonder if you would make something about changes Reforged made to Silvermoon? [edit 2] Is it me or Archimonde have 8-pointed Chaos star from Warhammer on his skull-belt?
@mickcraftgaming
@mickcraftgaming 7 күн бұрын
Yeah it's a great introduction to Archimonde and also provides a good bit of insight on Medivh's capabilities. Agreed, I wish we could have used Kel'Thuzad more. Yeah it's a perfect pause in Warcraft 3, the Orc campaign picks up following the prologue and the Orcs themselves are more or less oblivious to what has taken place in Lordaeron at that time. And yes I am planning on doing some Reforged content. They made some changes to Dalaran as well! Yes it appears to be the Chaos Star, although I looked it up and it appears Warhammer borrowed that from another fantasy, Elric of Melniboné by Michael Moorcock.
