I cannot comprehend how this works. Is the main melody and drum part some preset in which you just turn knobs to expand it, or did you play it just before shooting the video. I know jack shit about electronics, but am immensely dazed by what is happening here and other artists that I happen to be finding recently. Can you answer my question and maybe elaborate slightly on what you actually do in the video? It would be very useful for me, thank you for your passion. The world exists for people like you

"what" is being played i.e. which melodic notes and which drum notes and their rhythm are all being controlled by various sequencer modules which Rob is programming at some point during the set. Some melodic sequences are probably manually programmed in detail while others are using some kind of arpeggiator, where only the chord sequence is programmed (the arpeggiator plays notes from the chord in some rhythm and style). To me (which have no practical experience of modular synths) it seems that most of the time is spent tweaking aspects of how each voice sounds, i.e. filters, envelopes, etc. Hope I am not completely off. :P

@@havresylt Nah, I never program any sequence in detail. I just wing it! The Ground Control allows me to record whatever arp I'm playing, and has the nice ability to chain multiple 64-step patterns together. I think this was a couple of 128 step sequences and a 256 step sequence somewhere. I then use precision adders (Frap Tools 333 and Noise Engineering Quantum Pax) to sum multiple sequences together. In this case I'm summing in the generative sequencer nonsense from the labyrinths and mixing them with the DFAM and Mother-32 sequences.

What I'm trying to do is play live sets like this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2q7qJeVaLSHhdksi=0hq_nL_kcTWJn_69 My synth is basically a giant lego set for making sounds. It's all analogue (with exception of the sequencers and delay/reverb). It doesn't like to play the same thing twice (that was kinda the reason I built it this way). It is constantly drifting in and out of tune, and needs constant attention to keep things sounding musical I've got a video where I cover some of the basics of how the sequencing works here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5CkmaapbJmplaMsi=6DXGIRz39V_hvtj5 This particular video is the end of a 70min jam. I've got a couple of new moogs that randomly generate the notes they are playing. The first 60mins were me just trying to get the whole rig in tune (which is difficult at the moment, because it's really cold down here at the moment, so the temperature is causing my tuning to drift pretty wildly). So there was a little bit of pre-prep before recording this video. This video was my first play with the labyrinth: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmLLkp6cgLRph6Msi=R96rbBIPnlqka92J A second one arrived in the post today, however the first 60 mins didn't sound that pretty, so I trimmed the start off for this upload. Hope that helps!

Lets start with the negatives. You can't sync the two oscillators. MVCO out and MVCO sync In, but no VCO out, which seems a bit daft. You can kinda do it using the mix output, then patching back into the utility mixer and back into the filter/folder, but that just seems a bit cumbersome. The frequency range on the 2nd oscillator is a lot lower than the 1st. I'd have preferred both to have the same range to be honest, but I get they were thinking the 2nd oscillator is more of an LFO that tracks 1v/oct. Would have made more sense to have VCO sync in instead? The wave folder is pretty angry (certainly the angriest I've come across). It can go from pleasing to ouch pretty quickly! For some people that might be desirable, but I think I'd prefer a little bit more subtlety at the melodic end. Not really a deal breaker, just personal preference! The envelopes are pretty basic. Having one that was an AR would have been nice, but I guess that it's a space constraint problem. Unlike all the other synths in the line up, you can finally break the normalled connection between the EG and the VCA, which is awesome. I find myself reaching for maths quite a lot, just to replace the envelopes with something a bit more befitting of a west coast synth. I really like the noise source (boring I know, but that is one of the highlights for me). The sequencers are ace - definitely the best thing about it. The filter is unlike any other Moog filter I've used before. Really screamy, and not your classic 24db filter. It's amazing at making kick drums. As with any west coast synth, it's a little trickier to get in tune than the others (it would have been way easier if you could use the Sync, or if you had two waveform outputs per oscilattor). It's not a Buchla 259. An Instruo CS-L is about the same price, and has a hell of a lot more tonal range in it. However, on balance, I quite like it. I like it that much, that I've ordered a second one....

Thanks for inspiration Rob! I am a noob and I’m curious on your thoughts between the TipTop Circadian and the Ground Control as a sequencer. I see you use them both? Which one would you suggest to begin (price aside).? Thanks!
@robthebloke
@robthebloke 3 күн бұрын
Circadian rhythms only sequences drums. Ground control sequences drums and 3 melody lines. I got the circadian first, got to know it very well, and couldn’t see the point in learning how another drum sequencer works, which is why I’ve never used the GC for drums. I think the circadian rhythms is the best trigger sequencer in eurorack by far. The zoom feature means you can get 6 sub steps for each of the 64 steps (so 96th notes, rather than the standard 16th notes). The GC is a great sequencer. It has a couple of quirks I’m not a fan of, however Andreas at endorphines is making some firmware tweaks for me, which is nice! I’d never part with it! The only thing cheaper than the GC that I’d recommend is the Korg SQ-64. With pitch sequencing there are a fair number of options out there. Which one is right for you depends on the workflow you’re after really. I made this video ages ago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5CkmaapbJmplaMsi=ccEoKy2DF4dy6va3 Not sure if that helps at all?

@@Bsnbep I picked up a frap tools 333 the other week. I can highly recommend it. Mixer / multiple / precision adder, for a 1/3 of the price of the quantus pax. I’ll stick with my quantus (it has a few more channel outputs than the 333, which I kinda need now I have two GC’s), but I’m not getting rid of the 333 either. Super useful module 15/10.
