A fairly eclectic mix to be honest. Devin Townsend, lightning bolt, Jon Hopkins, Stephan Bodzin, John Zorn, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Boodaman, Richie Hawtin, Colin Benders, 3 Daft Monkeys, autechre, The levellers, Jean Michel Jarre, Duracell, and many many others. I’ve always leaned towards to people who can kick it out of the park when playing live I guess?

Just listening to your amazing creation this time. Love all your patches and jams. I’m looking to start building my own modular synth with the aim of making the sort of soundscape kind of music you do. What sort of oscillators / sequencers do you use for the amazing atmospheric bass / kind of drum machine sounds you use and the ‘big noise’ sounds? Thanks! (Edit) I guess filters and reverbs are pretty important too!

What I’d recommend, and what I use, are two very different things! This rig is basically a lot of moog, Instruo Saich for that big sound, and strymon starlab for reverb (admittedly also with strymon magneto for a clocked delay - although any clocked delay will do - however I’ve not found a better reverb that starlab) The Saich is actually a bit of a PiTA in practice tbh - it needs constant recalibration - and it’s a bit of a one trick pony. Just stack a bunch of sawtooth waves together, and run it through a 24db ladder filter. Moog matriarch would do the job, and be a lot more flexible. XAOC batumi II tracks 1v/oct, and can do a good impression of the Saich (only the new version though, the original and behringer clone don’t track pitch properly) It wouldn’t take much to build a better sounding rig than this to be honest. This isn’t the best sounding synth ever, it’s actually a bit rubbish…. Its strength is that it’s super easy for me to play live sets with.

My drum side of things is a bit of a mess tbh. I use the 2hp snare and hat (which are a bit crap), hexinverter BD9, tiptop 909 clap, and WMD fracture. However all of those are run through a few filters (basically a poor man’s EQ setup for someone who doesn’t have a decent performance mixer). I’ve got a video where I walk through how the sequencing Is setup, however again, that’s not the best setup for fine grained control, it’s just an easy setup for live sets. Mostly though, there’s a core backbone to the rig to make it easy to play, and a few bits on top that allow for a little bit of variation. All of that is constrained within the size of a standard DJ riser footprint. Any bigger, and it would be hard to get as many gigs (because the rig won’t fit in a DJ booth). I would for example prefer a Moog grandmother + matriarch over the mothers + Saich, however that wouldn’t fit into my size constraints. It’s not really worth getting fixated on my gear though - if you do, you’ll just repeat the same mistakes I’ve made. Oscillators like the after later cascades, Intellijel Dixie 2, instruo TS-L, make noise STO, are some of the best options out there (sound quality + flexibility wise). Going fully modular for synth voices is something I don’t fully trust in a live scenario though, hence the not quite as good Moogs (whose simplicity and reliability are a life saver when you’re on stage)

I know I’ll learn a lot by trial, but is it good to start with say a couple oscillators a multifunctional sequencer like Varigate 8+ for example and then a few filter modules? @@MV-vv7sg Start by downloading VCV rack (it’s free, and it comes with all the instruo modules). Once you jump into hardware, things can get very expensive quickly! VCV should give you a rough idea of what you’re after, without breaking your bank account! I’m not much of a fan of any 16 step sequencer (you’re limited to techno basically). If the sequencer outputs 2 or 3 melody/gate tracks, has 64 steps (and can chain patterns into longer sequences), you’re on the right track. If it does drums too, ace. Korg SQ-64, oxi one, keystep pro, all fit that bill. The variegates don’t

The only real problem with that is that I have no way to record the sets when playing with the quadraphonic rig, mind you, KZbin doesn’t support surround sound anyway 🫤 The whole getting popular on YT was a complete accident. My rig really isn’t suited to stereo at all, hence not using most of the quadraphonic mix and FX sections!

Lol, you’re not the first person to say that, however it’s sadly just a symptom of 30+ years of playing the drums (specifically a kit with a double bass pedal) If I want to be on time with my hands, my feet have to be within the rest of the groove first. I can’t really unlearn that at this point. Since I’m sat cross legged, well, the rest of my body shakes as well I’m afraid….
