Instead of using the painters cloth it was suggested on another site to use landscaping fabric! It does not fray on the edges like painters cloth does (I hate that) and absorbs the glue. It's supposed to work better and I am going to so some experimenting with it before my next project. I notice so many use Titebond 2 for Poor Mans Fiberglass which is water repellent. I use Titebond III because it is already waterproof so you don't need tto depend on the paint to make it waterproof.
@jackmalory36984 күн бұрын
Give it a try. The cloth, glue and paint I used has been bomb proof so far, and possibly cheaper. I have landscaping cloth I use under the greenhouse and it does appear to fray around the edges eventually, at least the stuff I have, but once its glued and painted that shouldn't be a problem.
@PainterD544 күн бұрын
@@jackmalory3698 Yes there are different kinds of landscaping fabric. SOme of the cheaper stuff is much like the painters cloth and frays over time. The fraying part is not an issue because the have it layed over the first coat of glue and usually have a coat of glue over it before it gets a chance to start fraying. The only reason it does fray is the more you handle it, the worse it starts to pull apart so prep work is crustal.

Is it possible to use the fuel dongle and still keep the o2 sensor? (for original look)
@jackmalory36984 ай бұрын
Since the dongle plugs into where the connector end of the O2 sensor plugs it will not be functional (the O2 sensor), but you could leave it in and just keep the wire zip tied up out of the way.

@jackmalory36985 ай бұрын
I think with the right curve it would be fine, but the curve would probably have to start just above the windshield so that the airflow was minimally interrupted, similar to how mine has the curve starting at a similar height to the back of the cab.

Both. I ironed it before, to get the wrinkles out after washing it, then as I laid the canvas onto the glue I used the iron to flatten it and stick it to the glue.

Did you put glue down on the foam first then put the cloth down then iron. Or put glue over the top of the cloth and iron right on the glue?
@jackmalory3698 Жыл бұрын
After washing the cloth, I ironed it some. I rolled the glue (Titebond 2) onto the foam with a 1/4 inch nap paint roller, laid the cloth on it and ironed it flat and worked the wrinkles out as I went, one section at a time.
@BB-st6mb Жыл бұрын
Looks great.. nice work! So you didn't put anymore glue on the outside of the cloth just on the foam? Did the glue come thru the cloth and get on the iron?
@jackmalory3698 Жыл бұрын
No glue on top. It came through in a few places but that is not the goal. The canvas needs to still be able to absorb the paint that goes on next to create the waterproof barrier. The glue that got on the iron basically melted off because it wasn't a problem. I added a link in the description of a great video showing the process. Here it is also. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWSteqyel8mcY7M

What thickness and wood species is the outer plywood? Then is That painted or fiberglassed on top? Did you make a video on that?
@jackmalory3698 Жыл бұрын
That is 1/4 inch exterior grade plywood, probably fir since I live in the northwest and it is local. I did do videos on the making of this camper, you'd have to check my channel to find them (they are the older ones). This particular video is me tearing the original apart so that I can make modifications, which have ended up being substantial. It was covered with what is called PMF, or poor man's fiberglass, which is an old boat deck waterproofing technique consisting of gluing cloth to the substrate and then painting the cloth. PMF is easy to do and very durable.

I built a similar topper for my 1500. YES!!! I am also amazed at how it effects the mileage. I have actually ran out of gas on a trip I am familiar with because of the penalty. My topper is almost exactly the same design, just sloping in sides toward the top. Oh, one other thing I noticed was a buffering that almost seemed like something pushing down on the roof! Strange. Good luck with the fix I will be watching! Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if you could stick those bamboo skewers everywhere to hold it together along with the glue. Then just leave them in there. It might add to the rigidity a little.
@jackmalory3698 Жыл бұрын
I found that I only needed it in one spot to keep it from sliding, once I had the panel in place and taped it was good. From what I can tell rigidity is not going to be a problem. This feels super rigid as is and that's without the roof on it yet tying it all together. I considered dowels but really don't think anything else will be necessary.

I’m a 65 yo female and have watched all the diy topper videos I can find. Definitely want to go the foam route also and yours is the first I’ve seen routering out for the framing. I’d like to go w cedar boards on the outside to protect it a bit more as I can see a a branch, etc… damaging the foam. Maybe put the smooth part inside then pmf over. Still figuring out but you have my sub and I’m anxiously following to see your results. Thanks for sharing.
@jackmalory3698 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. In your case, to keep it light, and easy, I would suggest a thin plywood over the foam if you really want to skin it with wood. I have seen multiple videos that put their trailer (or whatever) through some rough conditions and the PMF over the foam seems to hold up well, but I get what you are saying. I am still considering epoxy but I am not a fan of the price or the labor, but the strength is amazing.
@denidougherty9576 Жыл бұрын
@@jackmalory3698 thank you Jack for your suggestion, I didn’t see how you did your pmf and I’ve seen it done w bed sheets, canvas and paint as the initial layer instead of glue. Not sure what’s the best route there either. I really like the look of cedar and am fairly experienced working w wood, none w epoxy or pmf. Yours looks pretty good and I’d be happy w that result, just not sure I can get it. Thanks again for the advice and can’t wait to see your next video.
