Having grown up in suburban Surrey I was spoiled with Waterloo and Victoria etc but the north was always the trainspotting golden egg. I got to go to York in 1982 by (the then still) shiny new HST which was beyond exciting. But going along tracks with overhead power was the dream so views like 2:45 were so amazing!!!

Thank you for the brilliant comment Olaf, and really glad you enjoyed the video. Strange isn't it? I spent so many hours sitting at the end of Piccadilly's platform 5 watching an endless procession of AC electrics that, for me, that was the norm. A really big day out was a trip to the capitol, with visits to Waterloo and Paddington being the highlights. My first ride on a shiny new and seemingly so futuristic, HST was from Leeds to Doncaster, It was indeed, beyond exciting, even though we never got anywhere near the 125mph mark on such a short journey!

do they still use the 2000 classes?

Sadly not CM. All Adelaide metro services are now in the hands of either 3000/3100 class diesel railcars or 4000 class EMUs. A few 2000/2100 class units have been preserved (at the Port Adelaide Railway Museum and Steam Ranger Heritage Line, but I believe there are problems with loading gauge (relating to overhead catenary wires and platform faces respectively) that limit their operation.

I spent most of 1977 - 1991 commuting the length of the WCML from Glasgow - Euston and occasionally to Birmingham and the South West. Nothing else then or since can match the comfort of the Mk3 coaching stock and sleepers, the AC electric locos kept time and made up delays with ease. The introduction of Class 90 and DVTs just made things a little slicker, reduced turn around times. I would have them back in blink of an eye, over the current Pendolinos and Hitchi emus

I couldn't agree more 055. To my mind, the Mk3 coaches were definitely the pinnacle of coach design in the UK. I really likes the Corail coaches in France as well though, especially the corridor/compartment variations. I really wish they'd made some MK3 coaches with compartments (other than the sleepers) - that would have made them even quieter and more appealing.

I first rode the Scenic Railway in the late 1970s. There were no automatic hydraulic doors so you kept yourself inside the car, the roof was 2" wire mesh so the sclerophyll forest was free to drip on you going both up and down, and there was a grab bar in front of you if you were a bit frightened. I can find no record of fatalities then, or since then. The O. H. & S. zealots and insurance companies have really sucked a lot of fun out of this world . . . unless of course you consider that the current generations and their 4" screen need protecting from themselves. And don't even try to get me started on the safety railed boardwalk at the bottom of the descent. Nevertheless, good work Karl. Up to your usual excellent standard.

I do like how Scenic World have preserved some of their old vehicles as static exhibits though. There's even one of the original cable cars in a park outside of the complex.

Sadly though, these working stopped just a few weeks after I filmed this video, and the QNI refinery has been mothballed ever since. It was a wonderful little railway, and a fabulous addition to the list of attractions in Port Douglas. Sadly, it was (allegedly) yet another victim of Covid! And I’m not sure whether you could say that the locos have been preserved. They are on display, in the elements, at Marina station, and I doubt they’ll ever steam again. They are just static reminders of a far happier time. I’m both deeply upset and somewhat angry that such a fabulous railway should be allowed to close. This railway was a living, historic link to the pre-tourism days, when Port Douglas was an export port for sugar from the Mossman refinery. Heck, this railway even featured in a Kylie Minogue video! But now it is no more. I don’t have all the facts, and I’d be more than happy to listen to someone who does, but from what I can tell, closing it was a purely commercial decision taken by the private owner. I can’t understand how a new owner, preservation group, or even the local council, could not have got involved in order to save it.

Those reversing trains, were basically powered by gravity, the driver merely needing to keep the speed down. The trains were stopped in the platforms by the trip shunter in the rear brake van. The driver also observed a series of white lights placed strategically en route, rear facing. If these lights extinguished, the driver would stop immediately.I was a driver at Euston in those days and performed these duties regularly.

@@ukmoshinist4595 Thank you so much for clearing that up UKM; it’s fabulous to have such a detailed answer from someone who’s actually done the reversing. I supposed that someone at the rear of the train was effectively controlling the manoeuvre, and I was wondering whether there were any flags or even walkie-talkies involved, although I was confused that none of the drivers were hanging out of the cab looking back along the train for hand signals. I had no idea at all about the white lights along the platform and the driver stopping asap if they went off. Who was in control of those?

No flags or walk-in talkies, the white reversing signals were not in the platforms, but strategically placed alongside the track, all the way from Camden yard to the area just outside the platforms. The driver would be facing north, and the lights/signals would be in his field of vision through the windscreen. No need to open any windows and look back. As the movement progressed, one by one sight of the signals would be lost, but replaced by the next one. From memory, I think the were about 6 in all. Incidentally, I don’t ever remember the signals extinguishing, requiring me to stop the train. It was, however, quite common for trains to be required to stop at the south end, of the four steeply graded backing out roads, adjacent to the downside shed. If the trip shutter at the rear misjudged this, trap points would derail the train to protect Easton station. I remember this happening fairly frequently. (Though not to me!🙂)@@kartwheelkarl

Great vid , I used to love coming to Euston from Bristol in the early 1980s right up until my best friend was killed in 1987 then I didn’t come back for over 30 years where the only 87 running was 87002 on the sleepers

Thank you for your kind words SK. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video, but I’m so sorry to hear that your visits ended in 1987 following such a terrible event.

Just hearing the turbo screaming on the Intercity 125s takes me back to when I was little, and trains were something to get excited over.

I couldn't agree more SC. When the HSTs first arrived, we all disliked them because they replaced our beloved Deltics and Class 50s. But now, we look back with such fondness on that Valenta scream! Thank you for your great comment and really glad the video brought back such great memories.

The 47/7's push pull were used with 'DBSO's' not DVT's That's Driving Brake Standard Open or second open DVT's came on the WCML in 1988/9 & ECML in 1991. great video otherwise.

Thank you so much for pointing that out Thunderer, and well done for picking up on it. Can’t believe I made that mistake! Very embarrassing!! Rookie error eh? I’ve now edited the video with a subtitle correction.

@@Thunderer0872 I'm really pleased people are actually listening to what I say Thunderer 😀 I'll be honest, this is the first video I've ever made with a full commentary. I was so nervous about it that I checked every part over and over again. So imagine how much I kicked myself when I read your message and realised what a basic mistake I'd made and not picked up on. I'm really pleased that you did though and that I was able to add a subtitle to correct my mistake. Even adding the subtitle was something I'd not done before - this video has really upped my skill set!!

On the subject of the DBSO - I was delighted to read about one of them being preserved, repainted into Scotrail and out working with 47712. Shame it's not quite in original condition having lost its gangway connecting door during its time with Anglia and having had the lights altered during it's time with Network Rail, but that's a very minor thing. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever see a preserved 47/7 and a full Mk 3 + Mk2 DBSO set operating on the mainline. Wonderful! Only wish I could see and ride it in person! @@Thunderer0872
