Riddy, what has happened to you? It's been a year and we haven't had a video. I hope everything is okay.

Riddy, I am curious about your Flicka, which appears to have a wooden cabin , and glass hull. I wonder who built it ? The original design was for ferro-cement, some were built as hulls for owner completion or kits on the US west Coast, before Pacific Sea Craft began production of thier all GRP version which is most common. Curious about yours.
@riddy642 жыл бұрын
Hey Capt Larry, Thanks for your comment. As far as I know she was an early Nor' Star built on the West Coast in California. 1972/73' I believe. You're correct, Glass hull and ply/wood cabin top. She underwent a refit in the 1980's by a previous owner who added many improvements. No hull number or markings I can see anywhere but she does have all the 'berries' on the scrollwork which I was told indicates an early Nor' star as the detail became too tedious.

Their not great for hand starting, no flywheel to keep it turning over once compression lever is dropped. The bukh10 is a better design for this.

Is this a NZ Registered boat? If so, Did you get a cat 1 for it?
@riddy648 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, She was registered as a British boat as the previous owner was from the UK so that got me around needing a Cat 1. Once I arrived home in Oz I transferred the registration so she's currently an Australian registered boat. I was lucky the way it worked out because I recall I was going to have some trouble to get her to Cat 1 in the timeframe I had

You look desperately tired, friend. Be careful about sailing alone, when things go wrong there is little in reserve. The extra man makes all the difference.

what's the brand of self steering/wind vane on your flicka? great looking boat.
@riddy648 жыл бұрын
+Paige Caudell Hey Paige, It's a 'Navik' windvane, originally made by Plastimo I believe. The previous owner of the boat had one and swore by it. I purchased this one second hand off ebay from the states. Worked flawlessly for a couple of months until it broke mid tasman.... Hard to come by spare parts for them but we've managed to fix this one and it will go back on the boat when I get her back in the water! Cheers

When you made your long passage and had your self steering fail, did you try setting up Sheet to Tiller steering?
@riddy648 жыл бұрын
+Jake Jones Hey Jake, I attempted it a bit but as I was running downwind for days I couldn't get her to balance. Sailing into the wind she would balance quite nicely but I never did get sheet to tiller down pat (I'd never seen it done before and wasn't exactly sure how to set it up!) Cheers

I'm glad you like the vids :) I had my 26th birthday somewhere mid Tasman. I brought the boat in the Bay of Islands, NZ. It's been a goal I've had for a long time, since I was a kid. Worked hard in casual jobs while studying at Uni to save as much as I could. Was looking everywhere for a suitable boat, but they're pretty expensive in Aus. I saw the Flicka advertised on trademe NZ, knew of their reputation and knew it was the opportunity I'd been waiting for.
@riddy6412 жыл бұрын
Ah you might have caught me out. I think they were ropes I had tied to the handline I was fishing with so I didn't lose it if I caught a fish, and the solar shower which was lying down there too. Cockpit looks a bit of a mess, probably because I was bored waiting for wind and fiddling with things to pass the time :)

Great video, man. I'd love to see more like this!
@riddy6412 жыл бұрын
I remember I spent an 1hr trying to motor-sail to windward in about 35kn and short, steep chop. I made probably 500m ground and ended up turning back. She wouldn't point high and the 1GM10 struggled pushing her. Reaching or running in bigger seas was fine, a dry ride and she'd just let them roll under her. I gained a lot of confidence in her and don't think I took her anywhere near her limits. Couldn't have asked for a better pocket cruiser.
