Both are used in Eastern and Western boxing. I believe Jack Dempsey was an American boxer who first taught using body weight dropping to increase the force of his punches. This same concept is used in Chen style Tai Chi, one of their four primary "energies" and called "On". This can also be done in a clench, where you transfer your body weight to your opponent, so he now has to use energy to hold you up.
