Hi M. Came across your channel by accident a few days ago and have found your videos very interesting. Just thought I'd leave a couple of comments on this one. Saxon were the first band I ever saw. Carlisle Market Hall, 1980. Just turned 15. Made a massive impression on me at the time, but I must admit that I lost interest after 4 or 5 albums. Did enjoy meeting and chatting with Biff at the meet & greet when they came to the good old Civic Hall though. My first experience with Alice was when he appeared on the Muppet show sometime in the 70s, and performed Welcome to My Nightmare with Muppet monsters! That was a bit weird to innocent me at the time, but really got me interested in Alice. I love all of his work tbh. The way he has evolved has kept him interesting and in the spotlight for near to 60 years now. Some of those early 80s alcoholic haze albums are indeed a bit weird, but there are gems on all of them!

Good topic and good video Mike. I agree that a CD revival is a tough sell. There are a couple of other points that occurred to me while listening to you: First, one other advantage CDs have over vinyl is durability. Vinyl is a fragile format that's easily damaged (including their covers). CDs are a lot more durable. Second, since vinyl prices have skyrocketed during the vinyl revival, CDs became a budget-friendly option. A new LP on Century Media can cost $40-50 while a CD copy is about $15. This is the big reason I've seen more people digging through used CD bins in the past year or two; they're sick of every beat-up used LP being $20+. Unfortunately, companies have noticed this and now they're jacking up the price of new CD releases. More new titles are $22-24 on CD. Ridiculous.

I'm a Rush fan, too and I prefer the Studio Albums to the Live ones-to the point where I gave my live ones to a charity shop. I've got live DVD's including ESL, AS0H, GUP Tour, RIR, they'll go next. Even seeing them live, even as entertaining and awesome as they were, were just not a patch on the Music recorded under studio conditions. It's all to do with the improvisation they had to go to, to even try to replicate the technical intricacies of their recordings, in the live setting. Sometimes, perfection is just something that is fleeting and can only be manifested in moments-moments that can't be recaptured, except for the recordings of those times. Hearing perfection made me fussy.

Good conversation. I'm like you, I rarely see the point of them. When I was young with very little albums, I used to love the Pantera 101 Proof live CD haha. It brought the older Cowboys tracks up to speed with the newer album tracks with increased aggression, which appealed to me at the time. I also watched the Sepultlura and Metallica live VHS on repeat, though I mostly enjoyed the behind the scenes and tour banter stuff the most. The only live albums I think I still have that does get a listen to is Strapping Young Lad's "No Sleep Till Bedtime" as it was recorded here in Australia, plus it similarly to that Pantera disc took the couple of tracks I liked from SYL's debut album (which had bad production) and gave the tracks new life. The other is Judas Priest Unleashed in the East, for very similar "the tracks sound heavier" reasons.

I will highlight Decade of Aggression by Slayer as one of my favourite albums, never liked the production on Seasons in the Abyss, but the songs sounds fantastic on that live comp. Live after Death is ace, when you're 11 years old, that is just a magical release. So sometimes live recordings can bring life into music, that the bands can't make in the studio. I have another point with live albums. I love when bands release a whole show from one place (maybe even recorded on 2 or 3 nights). Live albums are all about the energy and the feeling. Most bands release those from different shows from a tour cut together or even worse, from a tour and the festival run in the next year. The energy changes from song to song, the energy from the crowd and the feeling in the band. I don´t like that. I want to hear what the band was doing THAT night at THAT place and suck up the energy they created at THAT moment. Did you know that Helloween used pre-recorded vocals (for Kiske) on the reunion live album? He was sick for half of the shows and they just played the backing tracks at shows with him miming. He admitted that in an interview.Hats off to his honesty but I can´t listen to it anymore...

I like them but only if there is a distinction between the studio versions whether that be faster or slower or with a different lineup. Sometimes it doesn't work so great or at best it's average. Take for instance Slayer - Decade of Aggression which honestly doesn't add much to the songs. The only addition or enhancement I can think of is the extra drum roll in Raining Blood (which I do really love). It's certainly not terrible but without visuals it's nothing special. It also depends on the type of band and really well produced stuff like Maiden is generally going to sound much better in the studio. But then with Live After Death the extra vigour and punchiness of Hallowed Be Thy Name live is so much better than the muted LP version (possibly because I heard the live one first). There are crtainly way too many average ones though and Maiden are probably the worst offenders. Did they sign an 80 album deal with EMI and just keep spitting them out so ther kids don't have to take over to honour the deal?

Agree with pretty much all that. The shuffle thing is why I also can't do Spotify, I tried for a while so I could listen while out and about but just wasn't for me. I used to have some live videos I'd watch again and again on VHS when I was in my teens. Live After Death and Maiden England, one by Warlock (was so stoked at the time to have even found that one, though had a *really* painful drum solo at one point). I did like getting a few bootleg live performances at one point, by the likes of Therapy? and Nine Inch Nails which would have either rare songs or where they get adapted quite differently by the live band at the time. Or the performances NIN did with David Bowie where they partnered up in the middle and did each other's songs. However since then I barely listen to them, and sometimes accidentally get a live LP when I don't know a bands discography very well. I used to find they worked best where I knew a band's songs really well so could hear all the variations and subtle differences. One thing I think you didn't mention is they can also be pretty long, which can make them a pain to find the time to listen to so they outstay their welcome a bit, even when they're a band you like.

For me, a live album is a great snapshot of a band at that time. A lot of which helps the nostalgic memories we hold. Being collector scum, I accept that I will buy a lot of live stuff purely because I feel I need to own them. The Motorhead Lost Tapes is a prime example. I know it's a cash grab, but I'm simple 😂 Live After Death is an album that I can see in my head, even just listening to the vinyl purely because it's ingrained in my psyche Rock in Rio polar opposite because I don't have that connection from my teen years, which ties in to my earlier point about nostalgia. Great video, Mike 👍

Your nostalgia point is spot on. One reason we sometimes feel deeply connected to certain albums-live albums included-is the way music links to key events in our lives. Books and films can have a similar effect, but music is uniquely powerful. When we hear a particular song or album, it can evoke an emotional experience known as nostalgia. Music is the strongest auditory trigger for nostalgia, although how strongly we feel it depends on personality traits (e.g., proneness to nostalgia) and contextual factors (e.g., familiarity with the song, emotional associations, etc.). For me, albums I bought and loved when they were first released have massive autobiographical significance-they’re like time machines. They take me back to memories of playing footy in the park, studying for exams, sunny days on the green, gigs at City Hall, getting my first paycheck, my first car, and my first… :) These moments are etched into the music. Interestingly, psychological research suggests that something called the "reminiscence bump" makes music from our adolescence particularly memorable. We tend to form stronger emotional connections during that stage of life. For me, No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith triggers the biggest reminiscence bump of all. Why? Because the bulk of it was recorded at two Newcastle City Hall gigs I attended, age 13! I can still picture the show vividly-even now, the opening of We Are The Road Crew comes to life in my mind.

I do enjoy live albums as they do give bands the chance to improvise and extend songs to give the audience something a bit different! I really don't like the idea of going to a concert and watching a band recreate the songs as they are on the record, you may as well sit at home and play the album. These days of course most established bands feel the need to use backing tracks to make the songs sound just like the record and that, to me, is a real rip off! Keep it Live! It's not live albums that are the record company rip offs , it's the constant repackaging of studio albums as box sets with all the so called extras and tracks the band would have made public at the time had they wanted their fans to hear them that are milking the album buying public with their FOMO mentality! I'm not really a fan of greatest hits releases as they tend to contain all the overplayed material but a good live album will incorporate alternative versions of the 'hits' along with some interesting 'deeper cuts' (as seems to be the term these days!)

CD sales will pick up again once people who genuinely love music realise they're not happy "owning nothing and being happy." The decline in CD sales has already stabilised in the UK, and it outsells vinyl 2 to 1. I've noticed second hand CD prices going up recently.
