I was going to comment that if you replace the happy music in the intro and some other segments, this movie would pretty much be a horror movie. But honestly I think it adds to the unsettling atmosphere, and makes it feel even more surreal and disturbing. Like what we’re seeing is supposed to be happy, but is so clearly abhorrent and wrong.

You know there was a theory that Truman figured out something was wrong way sooner than we expect. During the scene where he was “gardening” it was strange that he didn’t stand up or even move. It was because he was already digging his escape tunnel that he used later. This changed how I see the movie because what his day to day was what before seemed to be normal changed perspective because now he’s trying to figure out what is going on and who’s involved in it.

There is a suggestion that Trueman may be an hermaphrodite. He has no facial hair or sexual interest in Meryl who is overtly sexual in many of the scenes (eye candy for the Dads). There are many same sex couples throughout the movie. A little easter egg maybe.

The "Dark Void" doorway at the end of "The Stairway to heaven" is sublime touch. The void is the truth that trueman has no true relatives only a dark lonely void. Perhaps Sylvia is his saviour but probably not as she is in love with the manufactured tv show trueman. Modern day Prometheus / Frankenstein

yup, you are Truman. If you think you are a person origin latin for PERSONA actors mask actor in a play later human being. ALL Fictions of the legal system. legality is not reality. how much fun you can have with the cops and judges now, because all their codes statutes and acts refer to PERSONS. Also, the legal name you carry around with you on the driver's licence is that of a legal person. Best to tell a cop the D.L. is not yours it is the owner's and to give the fine to the real owner/ trustee. There was a trust that was set up by Mom when the lawful name was given to the owner, when it was written down on the registration of live birth then it was sequestered and you were given a legal name not to own but just to use in the owners game of monopoly. We use the owner's mono-eye money as debt/credit it is just promises to pay notes. You have been given to the owner. The proof is that Mom and Dad are fighting for custody. Custody means you do not own your own children. Go to Reclaim your Securities KZbin channel. Adam Beck will teach you how to Get into the Trust Estate hidden by the name social insurance account, or Social Security account. You are seen as a debtor almost all of the taxes you pay go into the creditor side of the trust account and when you go to jail the judges administer that trust account to pay to house you. Or if you claim bankruptcy the judge uses that trust to pay off your debts. The trust starts out at $0 and goes into negative credit/debt until you get a job and pay taxes. A taxpayer is a person who pays taxes. Are you a PERSON??? I sure the hell am not. Seems like a letter would be a good start to let the CRA. IRS know there has been a big mistake. Google Jeanne Gaakeer a Judge in the Hague who spilled the beans (The legal fiction of PERSONHOOD) print the essay out and send as your proof. We have lawful names like John son of Jack: Johnson. LEGAL NAME JOHN JACK JOHNSON sign tickets BY:JJ For JJJ. because someone has to act for the King's PERSON let him pay. Owners pay

If Truman does in fact gardening in his yard, that would mean that the Truman Show has real plants in the set (trees, grass etc)... So, how do the trees and plants survive without real sunlight?

19:39 thank you for making this. I’m 4yrs late, but somehow this video came through my algorithm. This film was so well received but criminally underrated. I’m 35 and I remember renting this for family movie night from blockbuster. 😅 I loved it then and I forgot how beautiful it really was. I want to watch it again now, older and root for him again. Separately, the guy talking about how every movie falls apart when viewed objectively; that statement makes me sad for him. We watch movies and view art to get new perspectives and to examine ourselves and the world. Not to deconstruct and criticize.

Honestly? What would have likely happened would be him having a million lawyers contacting him trying to get in as the one to help him take legal action to be given whatever the rate of highest paid television actor for all the unpaid hours, plus wrongful imprisonment, psychological trauma, merchandising royalties, the fact that they would have essentially broken labor laws (all that overtime!)... OSHA would have a fucking FIELD day... so, it would probably end up a lot like the end of that Brendan Fraiser movie 'Blast From the Past,' and he would retire in the sticks with his billions in a home with no one to bug him.

Great analysis of a true classic. I agree that "The Truman Show" may well be the closest to "perfect" a film can get, subjectively speaking-especially considering its era. And remember, this is before the real breakout of reality TV, notably before "Big Brother" first aired in the Netherlands in 1999 and shortly thereafter made its way to the UK and the US. Its prophetic nature was astonishing, almost like Plato's allegory of the cave brought to life in full late nineties splendor. Another philosophical issue tackled by the film is the concept of surveillance and privacy. "The Truman Show" eerily anticipates the modern surveillance state and the pervasive intrusion into personal lives for entertainment or profit, a concern that has only grown with the advent of social media and reality TV. Alongside "Bicentennial Man," it ranks for me among the most philosophically significant films of its time, and are great showings of the "philosophical" genre such as other iconic films like "The Matrix," "Groundhog Day," "Inception," and "Fight Club." Yet, "The Truman Show" is uniquely brilliant. I know this is great as a stand-alone movie, and this idea would probably have detracted from it; but it's fun to 'fan-imagine' if they had expanded this into a series of films exploring the same 'world' over several years. For example; imagine a 90-minute feature, framed as a 'director's commentary' of "The Truman Show," revealing more of the behind-the-scenes action. It could delve into the psychology used to manipulate Truman's behavior to enhance ratings, how they "like the way they use psychological barriers more than actual walls," and highlighting how any of us could potentially be fooled by such an elaborate hoax and even explore examples of people only knowing what they are shown to be 'true'-cults, cases of abuse, uncontacted tribes, and cognitive disorders. For a theoretical third film, it could explore what happens after Truman escapes his 'cave' and stops 'looking at the shadows on the wall.' This installment could address his struggles with the paparazzi and his legal battles against the production company, which might be planning an even more ambitious show involving several young children. These children, aged around three, could be coaxed into the show under the guise of participating in a "talent show" that's actually a ploy to introduce a new cast to the audience. Meanwhile, Truman could be depicted fighting for the rights of these new victims, highlighting the ethical issues surrounding the commodification of individuals. This narrative could serve as a poignant commentary on viewing humanity as a product, an aspect briefly touched upon in the original film but worthy of deeper exploration. Another philosophical aspect introduced in this theoretical third film could be the notion of "existential authenticity." It would explore the challenges Truman faces in distinguishing genuine personal identity from manufactured persona-a struggle that reflects modern concerns about authenticity in an age of pervasive digital personas and curated social media identities. Thanks for a great essay, i look forward to more, you obviously got me thinking! And this was fun to muse about.

Truman’s final line to me was him talking to the world itself. I think throughout the entire film, even in the beginning, he knew what was going on, and we the viewers had to put the pieces together. So thus, in the final line, recognizing this is his final appearance to MOST people, he wishes them that final “see you maybe, maybe not.”

One of my favorite movies of all time and you did a great job with this. I first saw this movie as a teenager and I honestly think it has really affected the way I see relationships, and this has me thinking about what exactly that means haha. But as for the ending - they don’t get to pick up where they left off, so to a degree, they aren’t different people. But because of the tapes and knowing what went wrong, they have an advantage few of us have. They might not BE different people, but they know themselves a lot better, and I’m hopeful that when arguments happen in the future, that knowledge will help them better empathize with each other and see their own behavior differently. God, what well done characters, as you said.

Not disguised at all really. From the moment he’s born, for thirty years, everything he has ever experienced and every relationship he’s ever had is an absolute fabrication, lie. Betrayal doesn’t really get worse than that for a mere mortal. He finds out something that topples his entire reality. It’s not reality at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had one tiny stressful interaction in the outside world and just died of a heart attack or milled himself.
