I never really had a problem with the carbonite freezing. For me I just figured that other bounty hunters heard of how Han was frozen for delivery to Jaba and they looked into seeing if the process could be replicated.

The original Star Wars was written as a "space age" Western movie. Mandalorian is also a Western, especially season 2. Mando just travels from planet to planet (town to town) and gets rid of whatever "bad guy" is bothering the creatures of that planet.

I think you mean "Space Age" Samurai movie. Star Wars was heavily inspired by "The Hidden Fortress". So much so that one could argue that Akira Kurosawa should get a writing credit. Since Spaghetti Westerns were also heavily influenced by Samurai films, especially Kurosawa's films, I can see a through line.

Todd B. the “lone gunman” trope finds itself in mandolorian as much as samurai. you are right in that the initial concept (space swords) was born out of samurai stories, but as i’m sure you know it was primarily born of the hero’s journey, found in samurai films, westerns, film noir, most fiction. a simple setup with enough variety in its execution that it felt fresh and new, despite being quite an old story.

I think the carbonite nitpick is a bit much... I mean, Jabba the Hutt had a carbonite statue of one of his enemies on display not quite a decade earlier. So, a major underworld player was showing off one of his enemies frozen in carbonite for a couple years, more than 5 years earlier. That would create interest, and spur others on to figure out a better way of making this new way of transporting bounties work better.

@@cloroxusthestainlessone4324 Well, it depends. I don't think carbonite itself is expensive at all. The machinery to freeze people in it, quite possibly. But maybe once you have that installed, than perhaps it's pretty cheap to use, just a significant buy-in, low recurring cost. Which would make it a sign of a professional bounty hunter. So... Overall, I think... It could be explained well and make tons of sense. But otherwise, it's just fine, not amazingly good or bad or anything.
@bethanyh1637

Its not a nitpick. EMPIRE made it pretty clear that Boba Fett didn't want Han frozen and that Vader only did it to test if it was safe enough to use on Luke. Yeah, Jabba had his Han statue on display for a couple years, but it couldn't have meant that much to him since he then tossed him into the Sarlac pit instead of refreezing him. Jabba then got himself killed because that "statue". Its inclusion in the Mandalorean was almost certainly for the nostalgia reference and not because made sense in the Star Wars universe.
@BatmanAoD

@@bethanyh1637 Jabba showing off Han isn't important because it made everyone want a frozen dude in their palace; it's important because it means word would spread over the course of that time about a convenient way of transporting live prisoners. Being able to ensure that they can't be injured or attempt to escape is a huge benefit; you can also keep many more prisoners on a small ship if they're all frozen.

Yeah. This show takes place years in the future, and Boba and Jabba did a pretty good job at publicly showing off the usecase of that technology for bounty hunters. It makes perfect sense that other bounty hunters, and businesses that support that industry, would try to improve the tech to make it more accessible. And Mando is a very successful bounty hunter, and has obviously spent a LOT on his equipment to do his job more efficiently. He bought and maintained an antique ship to bypass certain government regulations and somehow got his hands on a disruptor rifle (a weapon that was literally considering a war crime even by the galactic empire), he's put a lot of thought into what gear he uses and clearly effort to aquire them. It makes perfect sense he'd be down to pay extra for carbonite freezing capabilities due to its clear advantages

I could be wrong but doesn't IG-88 only respond positively to Mando after he mentions he's in the guild?? I'm not arguing that you're wrong or even that this directly contradicts your point but given that Carl Weathers said every bounty hunter in the cantina was assigned a fob, I would assume this to mean that IG was at least offered one as well and given his programming would have been unlikely to refuse. I've heard it theorized that IG wasn't actually told to kill and that it was only his interpretation of the goal because his programming wasn't designed for him to safely retrieve a target rather than kill it but that begs the question why he would have been sent in the first place given their relative abundance in the universe and the Empires experience with them. Like I said, I don't think this makes it unfathomable that he may have been sent by some other invested entity but it would have been nice for that to have been made clearer if that was the intent. Also, to piggyback off one of the points made in the video, wouldn't that also imply that there are now at least 2 groups capable of making a tracking fob capable of finding anyone anywhere?? As someone who has been desperate for some decent Star Wars media for awhile (I know I need to watch the Clone Wars series but I honestly don't know if I'll ever get around to it), I tend to just put it at the back of my mind as a minor oversight. IDK. Just my take and I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts.

@@dp_SkyDaddy I believe that they two different factions just used the services of the same guide. Obvi Carl Weathers gets his cut regardless of who comes back with the bounty so it makes sense he doesn't mind sending out a bunch of dude or whether the crappy ones kill one another since theirs few bounties to go around. So for the one faction who pays less, the crappy dudes. For the high end bidder who whats only a professional, the Mando. Also the fob is short range, they were all told his last known location, the locator only works planet side. This is backed up in the rice paddy episode because Mando thought that they would be safe there, but they are told the news of some local farms taking down an ATST has been gossiped about the last few however long it has been and the Mando knows he sticks out like a thumb, but when the guild dude shows up he realizes that people are probably hopping from location to location searching for them and this sort of news attracted attention so some bounty hunter probably checked out the planet and boom, the biological location started flashing

One they’re explaining in the Bad Batch show; that bein that one of first things the Empire did was pretty much force *_everyone_* to register for their galactic network, making it easy to catalog and track pretty much the entire population. And the New Republic simply continued using the system because it was convenient for them. So the fobs track people via this galactic network. Simple.

@5:00 Noooooo, Vader said "these facilities are crude, but they should be adequate to freeze Skywalker for his trip to the Emperor". Crude, because Bespin's carbon-freezing tech was industrial and not made for organics. In canon, bounty hunters had used carbon freezing for a long time before the Empire to transport more 'difficult' targets. Sorry to nitpick, but you utterly butchered that line so bad it couldn't even be considered paraphrasing anymore.

I'm going to point out, the Medieval Weapons thing has been a common motif even in the original series. They tended to be weapons used by specific Alien races. With the part about Mando not knowing what a Jedi is, this is a retroactive explanation in Season 2 (but still feels in-character); but it's making him part of a fringe group that wasn't even on Mandalore.

I get your points, and these videos are pretty good in all honesty, but for me anyway, I like the Mandalorian because it is simple. Star Wars has never really had that much of an internal logic to it, and this show, to me, feels like the franchise stepping back and taking a breath. I understand in a media culture thats kind of obsessed with how things work an why it works, a show that's just its own entity and works on a semi high suspension of disbelief can come across as somewhat lazy, but I liked the Mandalorian because it didn't explain everything. It allowed to audience to take it in. I understand it's plotholes, and they are plotholes, but I guess I just miss writing that just whimsical. That just shows you the world, and implies how it works rather than having to explain it with a wall of text.

Given that it's Star Wars, I hope this doesn't come off as some sort of weird gatekeeping and is instead noticed as the ramblings of a madman with way too much time at 4:42am (likely more than anyone will have to read this) but I digress. I want to preface this also by saying I'm a fan of the show. I agree that it does a great job of taking a step back from the mainline series and relies on character building and on screen demonstration over exposition dumps and obsession with world building. It's absolutely a breath of fresh air. It's effectively the 'Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" that fans had been pining for for decades only without the recognizable name, a move I interpreted as a deliberate and positive step away from rehashing already tread ground. However, if you're Disney at least, you can't have it both way's. In a way I would argue that this show leans on it's origins as a Star Wars property more than is often acknowledged. To be clear, I don't mean in a necessarily pandering way or even in an exploitative way, I mean in that a show with this level of narrative quality would be largely ignored if not for the world it exists in. The story is often meandering while still feeling like portions lack depth. Some of the episodes have more the tone of side quests but will pivot at the last moment to remind us that there's this main story going on. The episode where Cara Dune is introduced comes to mind where by the end it feels the entire 40 minutes only existed to introduce us to Dune and to later establish that Baby Yoda isn't safe anywhere due to the somewhat magic tracking fobs addressed in the video above. Which brings me to my real gripe and the reason behind this unnecessarily long and ultimately pointless rant. Which is, that if you want to use the set dressing of the universe that will bring your audience to you in the form of the Empire, Mandalorians, Jedi etc. you have to at least remain consistent with the hand picked things that are already established. I'm happy that the show isn't obsessed with lore and making itself fit perfectly into what came before. But I'm not asking them to spend 20 minutes explaining how carbonite is only used in specific circumstances. That was already done in Empire. I don't need an exposition dump telling me that Jawa's inhabit all desert planets. That would be slow and boring and gives me flashbacks to trade negotiations on Naboo. What I'm looking for is just a base level of consistency. These inclusions aren't egregious but, they certainly don't need to be present and it begs the question: Were these things inserted into the show because they were recognizable eye candy or because they fit in the setting, story and universe? In other words, are they there simply because it's Star Wars? Is it oversight or nostalgia baiting? If it's purely oversight are we neglecting bad writing solely because it's a Star Wars property? And if it's nostalgia baiting then I'd argue the show is guilty or of one of the things that turned many people away from the sequels (as well as atrocious witing). Normally I wouldn't be so nit picky, but given that Disney wants to shove Baby Yoda merch down our throat and is now using this show as a launching point for an entire Universe of properties from the Ahsoka show to Boba Fett and so on, I'm beginning to feel less inclined to give the show and its creators the benefit of the doubt. It can't be a whimsical, isolated romp while also piggybacking off of and attempting to be the roots of the universe it seems so comfortable ignoring. Also, to give some credit where credit is due, season 2 does manage to plug a few holes even dedicating full episodes to exploring the religious zealotry that confused many in the first season. Filoni isn't a terrible writer by any stretch, in my opinion. To be clear, I'm in a similar boat to you and am now questioning why I even felt compelled to write this based on your response. I just want to enjoy something Star Wars again and the Mandalorian is surely the best we've got to work with right now. This is just my longwinded take about something that doesn't matter. Cheers

"That just shows you the world, and implies how it works rather than having to explain it with a wall of text"? But if the writing is contradictory then it doesn't matter what it shows you. I bet they litterally forgot :D And the decision to have Mando just randomly start murdering these guys also came from left field, totally agreed. Even if they were in fact stealing, its still pretty extreme retribution. But it is conceivable, that they were within "the law" to start dismantling an unlocked ship... and he just starts sniping them dead without warning. I guess he really hates scavangers? Its even worse because Jawas were always established as pacifistic albeit annoying species... and even as they know he is actively trying to kill them, they still dont use lethal means against him!! Without context, Mando could 100% fit a bad guy role - its not even like with Casian in Rogue one... its just EVIL, nothing redeeming about his actions there.. and then he even tries to burn one alive during a trade conversation. Lit, the scene in episode 3 where he's surrounded and we're supposed to think he's in mortal peril is kind of undermined when you remember that he's covered head-to-toe in armour that just nopes blasters. The show was, pretty clearly, written by some dude who always picked Boba Fett when the kids played Star Wars on the playground, and was also the insufferable kid who would go "nuh-uh, I've got a force field!" when you shot him during those games.

30:50 I think the point is that they want a lot of bounty hunters on the case for redundancy. But typically when a bounty hunter knows that a job is also being handled by other bounty hunters they won't be as dedicated or work as hard to complete the job. Giving the job out to a bunch of bounty hunters while also swearing each of them to secrecy gives you the best of both worlds. You get the redundancy of a lot of bounty hunters working the same case and they all remain dedicated to the job.

The carbonite thing is kind of bothering me... We're well into the future here from Empire and even the prequels show a great advancement in technology to the original trilogy. You can look at Anakin's hand vs Luke's and see that Luke's might as well be a new real hand Anakin is stuck with a very robotic looking hand that doesn't seem to function as well. In Attack of the Clones we see Obi-Wan fly his jedi star fighter in hyperspace using a booster attachment that he leaves in orbit once he reaches his destination, but Luke travels to Dagobah in his X-wing and no external help. I don't find it at all hard to believe that carbonite freezing could have become more popular and efficient in the Star Wars universe. This doesn't hurt the world building at all, if anything it's to the benefit of the world building. As for the bounty itself as others have said IG may be from a different faction that uses the Guild's services and wants to make sure the child doesn't fall into the hands of the remaining members of the empire for obvious reasons. He was obviously given the last known location of the child because the tracking fob only work if you're on the same planet, why else would this information be necessary? And, why else would Mando ever think he would be able to find a planet to hide on? He looks at the fob probably to get a feel for the speed of the beep or at least confirm that his target is on the planet. As he gets closer you can see it beeping faster so this seems to be a pretty basic device and there's no evidence anywhere of it tracking through hyperspace I'm not sure where you're getting that from. Almost every point you've brought up at the 15 minute mark is such an extreme nit pick with seemingly little thought into what might actually be happening behind the scenes and isn't just shown to you. I don't think I'll be watching the next half hour of this video, and I've lost some of the respect for you that I gained from your other videos.

I always interpreted the discrepancies with the "bring him in dead or alive" thing to be the man who gave Mando the bounty going against orders because he personally wanted it dead, and whenever the scientist wasn't there, (like when he would have recruited IG-11) he would just tell them to bring it in dead. Idk if this is me making excuses for the show or stretching my own imagination, but I think that would explain it.
@codysingleton6262
@codysingleton6262 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly the part where IG-11 explains the contract is KOS might be just down to the fact that they made it clear they don't care if the baby is alive or not. They just want a body. They figure offering the dual offer to a HUMAN bounty hunter because a human would care more about a larger bounty. Meanwhile, a Droid who didnt even know he was going on an assignment which just a bullshit secret, wouldn't care about someone being alive. Druids are treated as soulless, so the same offer wasn't given to the Droid. They're just built to get a job done. It might be seen as a contradiction but I think at that point the Mando sort of got cold feet and wanted to not kill a child. Also, adding your point about speeders, while you're right that speeders would be more effective, Storywise, the area Mando be in may not even have speeders or the money to bring them in. Just because the tech exists doesn't mean every community has it. Even irl not everyone can afford a car. Besides how else are we gonna get those ridiculous desert sky shots!? JK but that's how I seen it.

I just assumed that the tracker only functions within a certain range meaning bounty hunters need to either be told the planet or do some detective work. Hence why Mando decided to move to the shrimp juice planet and was only found out some point after he kicked the crap out of the pirates. One of the hapless survivors probably got got and was able to give enough of a description to bring bounty hunters to the planet.

Eh, most things about the first season that one could nitpick about were so invosequetial that it's really not worth getting upset about. It's not like the original trilogy doesn't have plotholes, things that are left unexplained and things just conveniently working out for the main characters. I thought the writing in this show was really solid for what it was meant to be, aka a "space western" . Could have done without the fan service things of the second season (really, Luke skywalker? Thinking about the IG unit scene again, an easy fix they could have provided is that IG, as a robot, runs the statistics of what would be the safest action after such a large firefight, taking into account that clearly a lot of people wish to protect Baby Yoda, so it concludes that the best way to avoid being hunted is killing the target. Maybe it says something along the lines of "Nobody wants to hunt for a dead captive" or something else heartless like that, which forces Mando to shoot it since he sees it as an unnecessary kill. (Or they coulda, you know, flipped which part of the bounty gave more: kill the child to get a larger bounty, or let the child live so the Empire could do it for less reward)

His blaster rifle isn't really "powerful" in a conventional sense. It eviscerates organic matter, which is why it leaves the clothes of people if you look closely. It's actually pretty painful too, seeing as they get obliterated on a molecular level, but for them: time is extensively altered to experience this "flash" of a moment at an extremely regressed rate - it's a terrible way to go really, having your molecules ripped apart, slowly. The whole "science" of it is actually pretty badass. That said, still makes no sense he'd shoot at inorganic matter(the huge transport construct) to try to stop it.

I think this carbonite hybernating thing is there to say it's become a thing after Boba delivered Han in this form. Probably a bit risky, so, not the first choice, but when the target would make too much trouble otherwise, it's a good option. So on my end, it's good world building.

I watched your Truman Show video and loved it, but this to me seems to be just two hours of pointless nitpicking. I've watched both seasons of Mando and yeah, I noticed all of these things, but I still love it because it has HEART, something the SW prequels and sequels were sorely lacking, and it is responsible for reinvigorating an IP that had become the media franchise version of a battered housewife. Mando isn't perfect, but it has well-written character arcs, good acting and most importantly it has what the prequels and sequels utterly failed to deliver- in the words of Plinkett: 'The ability to connect with the audience on an emotional level'. Mando has plot holes, but people seem to forget the original trilogy was riddled with them. In ANH, Leia appears to know that the Falcon is being tracked after they escape the Death Star, making it extremely risky to fly directly to the rebel base. In ESB, how did Boba Fett get to Cloud City -before- Han and Leia and the gang, when HE was following THEM? In RotJ, Luke's plan to rescue Han was extremely and unnecessarily complicated, involving all of the main cast of characters, when he could have probably freed Han on his own, seeing that he'd somehow managed to master the Force in about a year, all on his own. I watch these moves, and I notice these plot holes, but I don't care, because the movies are fun, and enjoyable, and so is Mando.

I don't think the carbonite harms the world building for a few reasons. Partially because it takes places years after empire so there's been time for the technology to improve(and get cheaper), second if memory serves I don't think they say it's 50/50 going to kill han they just don't know what'll happen since people aren't normally frozen in carbonite. Since holding Han in this manner has now been an established precident, bounty hunters now have a convient method of storing their bounties without having to worry about feeding them or escape.

I think it's fairly unrealistic that Herzog has a bunch of a Beskar and the Mandalorians are just cool with it. Like "this material has almost religious significance to our war-bound-honor-culture, and it being returned to us seems to suggest a kind of proactive reparation in which we take back what belongs to us, but it's totally cool that some rando and his stormtroopers are holding onto it when we have a ton of Mandalorians on planet that could just go take it." Edit: but they could have solved that and even had the setup for it. Just have Mando go back to compound, he talks to the anti-imperial hothead Mandolorian, and says something like "you're right that we shouldn't let our cultural artifacts be used as bargaining chips by the imperials." Then their involvement against the mercenaries at least gets justified and it adds to their culture's worldbuilding.

Overly critical. The use of technology isn't always explained, but that doesn't mean it cant be. Your lack of imagination is not the fault of the world builders. A few examples: - You assume speeder bike can go over cracks, where was that established? Maybe they repel of the ground directly seeing as they don't kick up dust when hovering stationary. - The tracker is just a blinking LED. I missed the bit when they said that. In 1980s people would have said my headset didn't have any wires so it cant produce any sound. You have a lot of valid points, but criticising technology because it looks like magic is pretty weak historically.

I like some of your other videos. but geeze dude, you keep complaining about things like "what we are seeing contradicts what some person told the main character" as if it's impossible to write a character who lies. You seem upset that the random adobe and stone gets destroyed by blaster fire but the metal droid isn't shredded by it instantly. You are upset that the jawas try to run before shooting, and then don't try to finish him off. it seems like 90% of your complaints are "We have to try to extrapolate some information here instead of just being told any and all exposition." Different metals in this universe have different properties, personal energy shielding exists, it is expensive but defensive features like that are likely built into combat focused things like a bounty hunter droid. These Jawas may have some sort of belief or cultural reason for only scavenging and never killing. Maybe with how famous Mandalorians and Boba Fett were the bounty hunter guild saw the potential in transporting prisoners frozen in carbonite and some advances have been made in the years since Episode 5. Maybe it isn't that dangerous to freeze people in carbonite but Boba Fett's ship didnt have a freezer and they used an industrial freezer which is why it was so dangerous. Just because we aren't explicitly told how some things work doesn't mean it's bad writing. Maybe the writers messed something up, and maybe they thought of the why but decided devoting half of each episode to describing the how and why of every detail would take away from the story they were telling. Either way this video really comes off as you grasping straws just to justify a contrarian viewpoint. I still like your other videos but this I don't think I will watch the rest of your Mandalorian content.

Sometimes you deem certain scenes as empty exposure for the plot, and I have to agree with that, however, scenes such as the big fish gave me tension and definitely was a force that dragged me into the story, so... As long as these kind of exposures do not harm the plot, they are welcome and I would go as far as to say that they are necessary. I did enjoy The Mandalorian to the fullest, the characters are endearing, clearly evolve during the series and the plot in general terms is original and interesting. You might find inconsistencies but in these circumstances they didn't bother me.
