Maybe they didn't mean Pasaana IS a desert, just that it has one and it's forbidden by the locals. If anything, calling any geographical feature "forbidden" strongly implies there's a civilization nearby to forbid it.

Ryan C Explaining every tiny detail in a movie would be incredibly impractical and, frankly, would ruin the immersion for any story. But the original trilogy at least made a cursory effort, which was both simple and effective, to explain things. For instance, Empire, in the span of a single scene, described why a ground assault would be necessary to flush out the rebels on Hoth (and we already knew Vader was personally searching for Skywalker - hence his personal presence on the ground). Because the fleet immediately announced its presence, the element of surprise was lost, and the rebels were able to activate their energy shield that protected the base from orbital bombardment. Thus, the Imperials, if they wished to force an immediate confrontation and attempt to destroy the rebels before they could make a hasty evacuation, were forced to deploy ground troops and make their way under the energy shield (which also explains why they came from a distance and didn't just land on top of the base). Little to no such effort at simple but effective explanations were made in the sequel trilogy

And it wasn't even a tricky or clever way to bring him back. They just said "oh there was another ship whatevs" Clearly the writer didn't care about the Chewie dying or not part. They just needed something that Rey would be passionate enough about to use the lightning.

When I first saw the lightning, I thought, "Wow, this movie just got interesting!" Then after thinking about it for 2 seconds, I realized that they were 100% going to bring Chewie back. There was so much potential for good and interesting story telling, and it just falls flat.
@politebadger5049
@politebadger5049 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I liked the implication that Rey's powers were too much to control, it explains why she learned everything so fast but still limits her making her far less Mary Sue-ish. Of course they abandoned this completely 2 seconds later by making her actions have no consequences. If they had killed Chewie off then she could have developed into a character who has impressive force powers but is afraid to use them. It could have added internal conflict.
@OntheOtherHandVideos
@OntheOtherHandVideos 3 жыл бұрын
@@politebadger5049 Right? But they squandered that character development potential, because there was never a good through-line of character arcs for the series, so they really struggled to get any sort of character arcs in the individual movies.

@@OntheOtherHandVideos Right, I think Finn is the most egregious example because in the first film he actually had a pretty decent character arc, though I did feel he was a little to glib about killing former comrades. 6:01 No, it was not stupid. Jango's actual job wasn't assasinating Padmé, that was just the cover. His job was to lay a trail for the Jedi to follow to the Clone army, so the war could start, all according to Palpatine's design.

It's also possible that, since Kamino was erased from literally all records, both Jedi and Republic, Jango might have known about it and thought that using gear from a system that doesn't exist in any records would be really smart. But yeah, Palpatine wanted them to end up going to Kamino anyways. Personally, I like the idea that Palpatine somehow knew that Jango would use the equipment... From Kamino... And was hoping that... Okay, maybe that is waaaay too much of a stretch.
@Pantherblack

In that case, the stupid part is Obi-Wan not realizing that Dooku and the Trade Federation are connected to Kamino and the Clone Army, considering after Geonisis he unequivocally knew Jango was working with the bad guys, and oh yeah every single clone shares his face. It’s a bad plot, regardless of how omnipotent Palpatine is supposed to be (I’d also argue that omnipotent villains are boring for fairly obvious reasons.)

A similar phenomenon of devout brand loyalty is Pokemon. The Pokemon company puts out the laziest and most terrible games every time, and people are so emotionally attatched to the brand that Pokemon developers can literally get away with anything. The devs don't have to write logical stories, or optimize the game at all, or expand the depth, and people still buy them. There are actually two types of shield in Star Wars: particle shields and ray shields, the former blocking physical matter and the latter blocking energy. While particle shields are considered to be more effective than ray shields, they are far more energy intensive than ray shields, so they are rarely used on smaller craft such as the speeders. Much more common are ray shields, which are used on the majority of ships in Star Wars. This is well established in even the OT, where it's stated that the Death Star's thermal exhaust port is protected by a ray shield, allowing physical torpedoes to breach it, when star destroyers are shown blasting asteroids to prevent being hit (which one of them fails at, getting destroyed), and when we see that the Death Star 2 cannot be flown through so long as the planetary shield is still up.

I think the friction was mainly there to discourage people from viewing them as gay. They were the most prominent ship in trilogy, and they wanted to shit it down. So they have Finn and Poe be on the outs, then write in Jannah so there’s a female character Finn has a lot in common with that people can ship him with. Can’t have one of the main characters be a gay after all, that’s to be left to the background extras.

The worst thing about this whole 'arc' is that I actually sort of fell for the 'Chewie dies' scene. When I watched TROS in the cinema and Rey fried the ship, I sat there with my mouth open. After killing Ackbar offscreen, making Luke die for some reason and other 'subversive' things in both TLJ and TROS, I unironically considered killing CHEWBACCA this way a legitimate thing they would do. Yeah, I feel kinda dumb in hindsight, but the fact that I actually considered it speaks for itself about the decisions made in these movies...

One of the things that really gets me about the necklace scene in particular is that Kylo didn't even need to rip it off her neck in the first place. He can't see her surroundings, but he can most certainly see Rey herself, which obviously includes the necklace. minute and a half setup aside, I think the scene could've been a pretty good opportunity for Kylo to actually seem competent by recognizing the necklace and pretending not to notice until after the zoom call ends, rather than angrily swiping at her. Just wait a minute, that AOTC reference was kinda dumb. Jango killed his assassin with a Caminoan dart exactly so that Obi-Wan would follow him there. The Jedi were supposed to find out about the Clone army in order to start a war that Palpatine orchestrated, and the timing of that discovery was perfect to make them desperate enough to actually accept the terrible responsibility for ordering an army of slave children. It was all part of Palpatine's brilliant plan. Jango's purpose was never to actually kill Padme, he was meant to lure the Jedi to Kamino (and force Padme to go into hiding with Anakin, thus a) removing her from the Senate floor and b) creating the opportunity for the illicit affair). That's why Jango returned home after killing Zam, inspite of her failure - he'd done his job.

@Nobody comments are not funny you troglodyte Not really. Jango hired an incompetent assassin on purpose. But even if she had succeeded, he'd have still eliminated her with the dart and lead the Jedi to Kamino, Padme still wouldn't have been in the Senate to oppose giving Palps "emergency powers". In regards to shields, in Star Wars, there _traditionally_ exists two shield types: particle and ray shields. A particle shield would exclusively stop physical objects from getting in, while ray shields only fend off against blasters and energy-based attacks. So under this definition, you could say that the treadspeeders projects exclusively ray shielding to protect their occupants. However, as the lore progressed several new shield mechanics, with the most notable one being something I dubbed the "Feloni shield," since it was first explained in The Clone Wars cartoon (and since appeared in his other works). Essentially like the shields in Dune, the permeability is determined by the speed of the object. Fast-moving objects like blaster bolts, bullets, punches, etc. would be stopped by the shield, while slower movements (rolling a thermal detonator in, slowly walking in, etc.) will be let in with no problem. Now under this context, the shield of the treadspeeder doesn't make sense as the hooked rope was thrown at a speed that would clearly bounce off this kind of shield and the shield's own interaction with the ground would cause an immense amount of drag (a detail raised in the Rogue One Incredible Cross-Section reference book for the Occupier tank as to why ground vehicles aren't shielded). Also for one more fun tidbit, this movie also minorly depicts yet another kind of shield ever since the trailer, a kind that seemingly destroys stuff it comes into contact with, as seen with Tantive IV lifting off from that forest planet. Anyway, nerd out over.

Minor nitpick(8:37): There is some precedent for the shields, a major flaw for the droidekas in starwars was that their shields could only pick up things going decently fast, this allowed the clones and other to exploit this and roll grenades into their underbelly region, this is explicitly mentioned in I believe the clone wars, where Anakin and Ashoka were teaching people how to take out the droidekas, one can assume that the same technology is in place here.

That moment where Rey zaps the ship carrying Chewie was the one and only time the film actually caught my attention and potentially got me interested in something story-related. But they didn't have the guts to follow through. Maybe if Rey had accidentally killed her friend through overzealous use of powers she doesn't fully understand or know how to control, it might have added some depth to her, given her reasons to stop and think about her power or even be afraid of its use in the future. If he tried to kill her with almost any other weapon, he would have given Anakin and Obi-Wan time to react. And they probably would've captured him. I loved this video, your tone was great to listen to, and I totally agree with everything you say, although you left out the part where oops, Chewie didn't die after all. I dunno, I think the part where they use the dagger to find the Emperor's secret vault is worse, and the part in Revenge of the Sith where Palpatine reveals he's a Sith might be EVEN worse. Okay, let me explain myself: First, Palpatine has been telling Anakin the whole movie stories about the dark side of the Force, and yet he has to literally come out and tell him that he's a Sith. Then Anakin is like, "Oooh I really want to kill you but instead I'll go tell the Jedi on you," and walks off. Then he tells Mace Windu that Palpatine is a Sith lord without any proof, and Mace is like, "A Sith... LORD?!" He tells Anakin to stay here and takes a whopping three disposable Jedi with him to arrest Palpatine. Palpatine amazingly has been sitting there this whole time waiting for the Jedi to come arrest him, and then just kills all the Jedi (who just stand there and die) except Mace, who kicks his butt in a lightsaber duel. Anakin, instead of listening to Mace, has WALKED all the way here to ... watch this happen or something. Mace has got Palpatine on the ropes now, and he's like, "OK you need to die, you're too dangerous to live," and Palpatine starts shooting lightning, which melts his OWN face? Then he starts crying to Anakin, "Don't let him kill me!" and Anakin does something to help, but it's hard to see what he did, I think he cut off Mace's hand or something, and then Palpatine lightnings Mace out the window, laughing about UNLIMITED POWER! and it's clear that he could have done this all without Anakin's help, he just tricked him. Then Anakin is like, "Oh no, what have I done?" and Palpatine's like, "Well, you're a sith now. Go kill all the younglings, it'll save Padme somehow." AND HE DOES EXACTLY THAT. ...and later, after Padme dies by his own hand, and Anakin no longer has any reason to follow Palpatine, he still follows Palpatine. Why?

The problem with this movie is how it destroys the themes of the light vs dark. The dark side is more convenient, but the dark side lacks restraint and tries to consume the user, and this can end up hurting the force user or the people that they care about. Rey COULD have learned this lesson from accidently offing Chewie, but Rey learns nothing. On the contrary Palpatine seems to have perfect control over lightning as he blasts the sky, selectively only hurting enemy ships and not his own. Sure, Palpatine destroys himself, but I'm not sure if that matters if Palpatine is immortal. How do we all know that it wasn't just all a force projection? This movie has no message and nonsensical stakes. No kid can go home and take away a valuable lesson from Rey about self-discipline. Rey has no restraint, but things just work themselves out anyways. Really the Rise of Skywalker has no artistic value, and represents J.J. Abhrams morally abhorrent attitude about always taking the easy route, which is opposite of what Star Wars was meant to be about.

I'm not sure I agree with that. I mean... the idea for a trilogy wherein Anakin turned to the dark side, I guess? Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan, sure. But like... the movies should've prioritized Anakin's and Padme's romance above anything else; if we don't believe that they're deeply in love, if we don't believe Anakin has lost everything else in his life and losing her would break him, then the entire prequels fail. And... they failed. Like, Anakin was a slave, so you think you have a good set up to demonstrate how shitty his life is; you could have everything bad in the world happen to him, and his relationship with Padme then ends up being the only good thing he's ever had, such that you would believe he'd do anything to protect her. But, you know... despite being a slave, he seemed pretty happy. And there's just NO WAY you believe Padme likes him; they met when he was 10 and an immature child, and the only real time they spend together is when he whines to her about Obi Wan - and she could've, like, had a similar relationship with somebody so that she's immature too, and they bond over that, but... nah, guess not - and then when he tells her he murdered women and children. Then they get married! Mazeltov! And, like... he went to the dark side because he thought the Sith had secret immortality? Like, why the FUCK would he believe that? Has there ever been an immortal Sith? Did he think they were, like... waiting for the right time to become immortal? They should've just had the Sith tell Anakin that there's nothing inherently wrong about tapping into "negative" emotions to use the force - that they're not even negative emotions in the first place, they're just powerful, and the Jedi Council doesn't trust you to be that powerful because they're greedy and selfish and they don't want to share those secrets with you, but *we* can teach you "dark side" powers, and then you'll be so powerful that you'll be able to protect Padme... not, like, make her immortal, just "powerful enough to protect her from anything". And, you know... of course they're lying, the dark side is insidious, and being overwhelmed by negative emotions like fear or anger or hate can cloud your judgment and lead you into doing something petty or selfless or evil, and that's why the Jedi don't do that... but that is close enough to the truth that it'd be a better lie to sell to Anakin, and it'd make so much more sense for him to believe that - and also, preying on his insecurity and immaturity and arrogance by telling him the Jedi didn't trust him with that power makes a lot more sense in seducing him to the dark side, because you know he'd take that challenge head on rather than seeing the trap and sidestepping it.

The decision to make Anakin and Padme's relationship important was a good story decision, it just wasn't executed well. This fail in execution, made Anakin appear creepy and clingy instead of appearing like someone in a healthy relationship. A lot of the prequels is like this, a good idea not executed very well. Even something like Jar Jar isn't a bad idea, there's nothing inherently wrong with having a comedic alien side-kick named Jar Jar Binks. The problem is that the jokes they gave Jar Jar were just annoying slapstick, the annoying voice is also potentially a racist stereotype, and the cgi is dated.

@@iminumst7827 I mean, the problem *was* execution... it just wasn't limited to execution. They should've gone into the 2nd movie intended to spend most of the run-time on Anakin and Padme's relationship. If they had, but the problem was *only* the dialogue, acting, chemistry, then fair enough. But they clearly didn't prioritize their relationship; we spent very little time with them together.

All that youngling did was help confirm that Kamino was in the place he was told it was since Obi-Wan couldn't comprehend why it wasn't listed in the Jedi archives; the greatest source of information in the galaxy. Remember, all he had to go on that Kamino actually existed and was in that region of the galaxy was because his friend told him so. I’ve never simultaneously loved and hated a movie at the same time. Like seriously, I adore Star Wars and the new trilogy but I agree with almost everything you said in this video. I’ve been scouring through KZbin making sure I collect every single criticism I can find for a re-edit I’m working on. Believe it or not, if you take small details and lines out of this film, it’s already so much better, especially with Pasaana. It’s funny, The first thing I ever did was add the lasers hitting the speeder! I did this back in December. Thank you for making this, you gave me a lot to think about. Keep up the great work.

With shields, a cool thing explained in something from the prequals i think, is that it stops things based of its speed. In the clone wars cartoon, if you slowly roll a detonator, it can go through a droidika's shield. So there are different levels and types etc. and is why starfighters can fly by captial ships. So basically, that speeder scene broke a rule of star wars

@@Theo-bk6qj Star Wars famously ripped off Dune in many, many ways. Of course Star Wars has ripped off a lot of things. But the way the shields work in Dune are specific, unique and play a story role in the way warfare, politics and combat is undertaken. It's not something generic like zombies. You should read it.

About the shield of the threaded speeder. That didn't bother me, as the shield would need to cut out below a certain height. Or it would just accumulate a sand wall as it pushed everything in front of it.

I like way mass effect explains their shields, where the have a set limit to only activate when something of a certain velocity is within range so a soldier doesn't sit down and have their chair get launched off at lightspeed by their shield.

So, in a New Hope, the star destroyer ship that had Vader that captured the Tantive that had Vaders daughter just so happened to be orbiting above Tatooine which had Vaders son, so that 2 droids could deliver the message to Obiwan who just so happened to be looking after Luke and also trained Vader is an acceptable line of events, but Lando being there on Pasana at the same time is crossing the line of believability?
