I also built a media wall as a relative beginner (made a few bits out of MDF and wood about 20 years ago). Watched a bunch of videos on Americans framing walls (as that's basically what you're doing first), then plasterboarding. I was just going to say instead of those L-shaped brackets, you can just "toe-screw" the frame together with long screws.

That's actually a great idea. Even to this day I hadn't thought of that! If I need to build framework again I'll do that. Thank you!!

No one is an expert when they first start, to get as far as ypu did is great. Dont worry about fancy tools, most are a waste of money, as long as the tool is acvurate then it will do the job. There is plenty of videos showing how to check for accuracy etc. I wouldnt worry about the nibble out of the edge, its a work bench, it WILL get plenty of cuts and dings in it if you use it as a work bench. After a few jobs it will blend in with the rest of the marks that happen over time.
@C.C.WoodworkАй бұрын
I think once I've made enough mistakes I'll be able to get my head around leaving the mistakes there. With this bench I wanted to give it to my son, so kinda needed to get it right. However I'll give it a week of use before it's got more dings than my car 🤣

@C.C.Woodwork ah I see, i understand you wanting it to be as near to perfect as possible. Once it's all done I'm sure it will be great and a useful addition to any shed, what kind of work is your son wanting to use it for?

@scotthenry3401 He wants to make wooden katanas. He's very much into anime and japanese culture, so he's got his mind set on it 😊 The rest of the workbenches can be as dinged up as possible haha! Most will have interchangeable tops though.

@C.C.Woodwork cool, well for a self proclaimed novice you knew what to do and how to do it, so it's just a matter of carrying on making things, your confidence and finish will get better each time, if you make a mistake then don't beat yourself up, we all mess up. Allow for mistakes and learn how to fix them and it makes us understand the processes better.

Hi. we have all be there with routers. This may help : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZDaqodqrL58d68 . Make sure your guide rail is clamped down tighter than a ducks arse before you start and keep your pinkies well out out the way of the cutter / base plate. I never understood why those smaller trim routers dont come with some sort of handles to aid stability?. Even my 20 yr old bosch 500w green router had 2 handles but now thinking aloud I suppose that was because it was plunge router. Anyway keep it up and dont worry about mistakes - its the best way to learn .

You mentioned about taking a break. I do this when things are going wrong or when my brain starts to hurt. I go grab a coffee and go back to it 10 minutes later. Does help, clears the head and gives you a fresh start. Worth a try.

Hi Dean, I saw your media wall vid, well first two installments anyway, so far. You clearly aren't as clueless as you think. Being a plumber has given you lots of useful tips. I have a couple for you, the following channels, in my opinion will teach you so much more. 1. Karlpopewoodcraft obviously is the first choice and this guy supports many of the smaller channels too. 2. Hew and Awe amazing skill, all self taught and has some real interesting stories to tell 3. Epic Woodworking, this guy is on another level of brilliant, watch anything he has done and you will be inspired. 4. Start Making, good teacher, useful tips, humble and everything he does is doable by mere mortals 5. Rag n bone Brown down to earth, honest and relevant 6. Bourbon Moth woodworking, variety and high level of skill and entertaining 7. Learn2diy full of handy tips and is concise 8. Sumeray builds, honest reviews and relevant 9. Peter Millard, useful tips but is more focused on the high end stuff 10. London Craftsman, relevant and full of tips 11. Proper DIY. Just a great channel Obviously there are many many more than these but I think you will learn the most from this list (in my humble opinion). As I said Epic Upcycling is just on another level entirely, all I get from his channel is inspiration and entertainment. I am fully aware that I can never replicate anything he does.

I have almost the same saw from about 25 years ago, they were a B+Q own band back then. The red bit about minute 7 is the insert plate. the screw you mentioned about min 56 is indeed a depth stop but you wont be able to do trenching cuts as its not a sliding saw. Now that its up and running the best thing you can do with it is to replace the blade - it will make a huge difference- and then recheck for square to the fence. check out saxton blades for spares.

My favorite quote from a mentor of mine was "Don't let perfection be the enemy of good". I.e. don't be afraid that it won't be perfect, just be afraid that it won't be. Especially for the first bench, first of anything really. The second bench will be worlds easier to build once you have one already. Every mistake is a lesson. Listen to that part of your brain that says I should have worn protection and done this outside. Solid ideas coming from a good place; pause to put on protection and change your setup. If it doesn't feel right, adjust.

I started cutting up my plywood with my circular saw and a guide, but kept getting slightly out of square, so I went a got myself a track saw. This made a huge difference, now everything is straight but also square. Made a bit of a botch up in a couple of places, but I have more plywood and will redo those parts until I am happy, and that was the point of doing this current project. I also went to Bangood and got a couple of squares and other things. Found them all to be good and at a reasonable price. Look forward to watching your progress.

It’s all a work in progress, you’ll learn as you go, and more than likely from mistakes. Just part of wood working, can’t always get it right first time. Nice table for a first build, getting something square and level is a great outcome 😉 When ripping your ply (or anything else for that matter) set you saw depth so only half a tooth deeper than your material. That should reduce any possible binding/kickback and splintering/tearout. Keep up the good work!

Hey man, Great work. I struggle with wanting things perfect and have just been diagnosed with adhd, so I feel the struggle. The way I see it is, get the plywood on top to the best of your ability, then at least you have somewhere to build on and progress your skills from there. That's what I've done and I now feel confident enough to get rid on my old bench and do something much more suited to my needs. Its a place to build from, literally and metaphorically! Also just a thought you could turn the plywood around so the nice factory edge is the bit you see, get it secured down. That way you could either sand the back bit flush with the base or you might just forget about it over time haha

To check if the table scale is accurate, you can use your largest, longest drill (or even better a length of 'drill rod', which is like a piece of precision drill shaft with no flutes or cutting geometry ground into it) and feed it through the hole in the table. Use a square against the drill to check left/right, and also front/back. For left/right adjustment, loosen the table nut slightly and tap one or the other side of the table with a mallet until the square is in contact top and bottom. Use a sheet of bright paper or a backlight, to see the gap more clearly. Cinch the nut tight and recheck the squareness. If the scale is inaccurate, some models have a screw to adjust the pointer. Or, make your own marking-- cheap tools are just asking for you to modify, and improve them, if you think you can do so safely.... If the front/back is out of square you would likely need to shim it on the top or bottom of the pivot surface to correct the angle. Scissors and a bit of soda can metal cut to shape will do in a pinch.
