Thank you for sharing this video. I work for a fine art company and we've experienced the same issues-ghosting on thick paper, frequent jams, and the paper detaching from the core of the roll. Our printer is still under warranty. Has anyone successfully had their unit replaced by Epson? I’ll be discussing this with our Epson rep, as a replacement seems like the best solution. I appreciate the suggestions, but for a $10K printer, I expect it to function properly.
@smoore6917 күн бұрын
@@hannahstewart2172 Epson actually replaced one of our printers but it didn't really help. Their support is actually good, but in my opinion this printer is a lemon. We recently replaced our two Epson P9570s with Canon 4600s and are very happy. I'll do a video on those very soon. I wanted to run them for a month or two before doing a video. The Canon 4600 with dual roll feeders have been problem free and have vastly improved our productivity.

Good technique, but, I'm working on ceramics (tea pots) with gold paint. The entire surface is glossy. I'm having a hard time dealing with the gold not being lit well (it's curved in two directions) without the rest of the surface not being washed out by diffusion material/soft boxes. Hope you will see this and get back to me.
@BellevueFineArtReproАй бұрын
That's a difficult situation. One thing you can do is to take a shot where the tea pots look correct. Then, without moving the tea pots, or the camera, adjust your lights and or polarizer filter so that the gold looks good. You're going to probably have to take several shots, as you'll never get all the gold too look good at once. You'll end up with a series of shots where different parts of the gold look good. Stack those shots in PS and then erase away parts of each layer to expose the good gold. I can't think of an easier way. Focal stacking would be nice but it won't work here, so you'll have to stack them and then erase away on each layer to expose what you want. This is easiest if your best shot is on top, then you'll erase only the gold area on each shot that doesn't look good.

One more idea: It would be useful to map d-pad to set number of steps/distance. For example: 1 d-pad click to move 20 cm in selected direction. This would make scanning grid consistant and fast. Also, it is super easy to connect arduino via intervalometer/remote port on camera, so you could also trigger the camera via controller. As for how to program it - ChatGPT will help you with that.
@BellevueFineArtRepro4 ай бұрын
The DPAD does function like this. The joystick moves the artwork freely. The DPAD moves the artwork in a set distance, and you can easily change that distance in the arduino code. We've currently got it set to 6" on X and 9" on Y, providing over 600 PPI with plenty of overlap.

Great project and use of space. One idea for Z axis: If you would add 5:1 worm gear-box to stepper - you would remove the need of counter weights and make it run smoother by microstepping and runing faster.
@BellevueFineArtRepro4 ай бұрын
thanks! Yes! That's what we wanted to do, but we could only find worm gear boxes a maximum of 48" (about 120 cm) and we needed more than that. The size of it made that difficult. The worm drive was our first choice for sure. We just couldn't find a 9 ft worm drive box.
@3rdHalf14 ай бұрын
@@BellevueFineArtReproSorry. I did not mean rack and pinion. Instead of attaching sprocket dirrectly to motor - ad a worm gear reducer, sized for stepper. Worm drives can’t be physically back driven, so motor would not need holding torque. And gear reduction would remove the need for counter weights.

Absolutely! We have one made with 2" PVC and another with 3". Even then you need to be very careful not to crease the heavier Hahnemuhle papers. In particular the Torchon and the Fine Art Baryta can be tricky. We roll those lightly and carefully. It does take a little practice, but it's kind of the nature of the paper. With the Torchon, you can get away with a little crease here and there depending on the image, because it's sort of a trait of the paper. Less so with the Baryta. But really all of them require that you roll them lightly, the Museum Etching, German Etching, Fine Art Baryta, Torchon, are all thick enough that they're easy to crease when d-rolling.

Seeing this video and reading all comments, and I have experienced every single problem mentioned here. Problems loading paper, paper jams, ghostings, head scratches... My main issue is with ghostings, and it's related to the paper feed. For some reason you can hear the printer rolling the paper back and forth until the paper jams. I could print without ghosts when the inner core was loosened, so the paper could be transported freely. I have stopped having paper feed and skew problems with my 9560 after changing a few printer settings. I have a 9900 and a 9560 in a print facility in a photography school. The thickest paper so far I have run thru the 9560 printer is Hahnemuhle photo rag 308. The lightest I've used through it is Washi 110 gsm. [I see elsewhere on your channel print creasing problems when printing what looks like lighter gsm washi paper.] When I fist got the 9560 it was terrifying the way it handled paper. It was brutal. But I stopped having paper feed or skew problems (so far) after changing the following. I turned off the auto paper loading**. And under all the paper settings that I have saved, under advanced paper settings, I have turned off the ‘skew reduction’ and turned off ‘lateral feed adjustment. With these settings the paper loads just like my old 9900. Manually push the paper all the way thru the printer. Gently pinch the center of the leading edge of the paper that’s come out of the printer and apply a little tension, so that the paper is square. Press the paper clamp button on the front panel. Close the lid and you’re done. I have since had no violent back tension, bunching of the paper under the cover or paper skewing problems. ** Turning off auto paper loading… Menu / General Settings / Printer Settings / Paper Source Setup / Roll Paper Setup / Auto loading. The ghost / double printing I have not seen yet. That looks really serious.

We still get paper skew warnings ALL the time with these settings. Epson wants the world to believe that these issues can all be resolved with new EMI settings and it's just not true. The lateral feed adjust helps by turning it off, but we still get constant head strikes, skews, and ghost printing. Running the machine at half speed helps, but nothing, and I mean nothing resolves all the paper feed issues with the p9570.

@@BellevueFineArtRepro Really sorry to hear that. I have been a long time subscriber to the Epson wide format user group and have been watching a ton of serious issues raised about the 9500 series printer. It so bad that a group of subscribers got together and sent an open letter to Epson. It has had me wondering if we had just struck it lucky with our specific 9560 printer. Or maybe we have not been running the kind of media through it that’s given the paper feed troubles other’s experience . Unfortunately our Epson 9900 just died. I’ve run Epson 9600 9880 9900 and they have all been basically dependable. But I’m in a dilemma as to what to replace it with. I’m reluctant to get another 9560. Us having to turn off many of the 9560’s new printer features to get it to behave, has not inspired me with confidence in the engineering behind the 9500 series printer. Let alone the reports I hear from other users. The issues I have experienced with our 9560 are… gloss differentials in the blacks on gloss media. In normal print mode the gloss differentials are so bad customers have refused to accept the prints. My solution had been to run gloss jobs through the 9900. The 9900 did a great job, no gloss differentials, very happy customers. Now that I’m down to just the 9560 I’m testing the ‘black enhance overcoat’ mode to see if that will improve things. And while our 9560 does not ‘ghost’ print like yours, text on print jobs looks noticeably thicker and less well defined on the 9560 compared to our 9900.

There's no question there, but with the P9570 we started having so many issues with heavy papers that it kills us.
