Even with the super cold and 2 rounds of snow I have swiss chard and some Vivian Romaine lettuce still alive, as well as the strawberries. They each have covers and then a second cover of the greenstalk zip up covers. The double covering seems to be doing the job.

They will grow really long runners. I will bury the runners every 6-8 feet. If the borers get the main plant the rooted runners will never know it happened. Our one plant gave us 7-8 huge squash. We still have one left and it is still good.

Looks great. What type of grow lights are you using?
@djrramsey26 күн бұрын
In this video I am just using plain shop lights with the 'Daylight' rating. They are really hard to find now. I have been getting 4 - 6 packs of led shoplights off of Amazon. Roughly $20 a bulb. No fixture, just a tube. Get the 5000 to 6500 range bulbs. They are working quite well for me. Tough to hang with no fixture, so use some zip ties to attach them to the shelf above.

This is such a brilliant idea! I love this DIY hydroponics system. Thank you for the tutorial-it's great how you've kept it both budget-friendly and practical. I appreciate you sharing the resources! I already have a couple of hydroponic systems at home, and I'm excited to make my own. I have most of the materials you mentioned, so I'm really looking forward to giving this a shot. By the way, do you think I could fit in 2-3 more holes in the center, or would that overcrowd the system? I've dealt with overcrowding in my two hydroponic systems at home, but the container you're using seems much larger than mine, so maybe adding a few holes would be fine?Thanks!

I have one with 8 holes. Works great. Another one with 12 holes (using K cups). Works ok but the roots get really tangled up.

What variety of elderberry is this?

I purchased the original elderberry sticks at the Mother Earth News festival in North Carolina for a small company in North Carolina. It was from native North Carolina elderberries. How do you process the Turmeric? Do you grind it?
@emilybh62552 ай бұрын
I freeze mine and take what I need for a recipe out of the freezer. It is the best way to store ginger. That way what I don't use seems to last forever (months or even years). I always have it on hand.

@GrowAndEatThis2 ай бұрын
I get my onion transplants from Dixondale Farms. They send them to me first week in February and say that is the best time to plant here. Always get a super harvest. But I plant garlic now, and a lot of people plant onions now also. If they sent you plants then you are going to have to get them planted before they become dried out and useless. Looks to be above freezing for another week or so. Still time to get some root growth before the freezes come.

1 medium onion 4 cloves garlic 2 cups mint leaves OR 20 drops peppermint essential oil 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper 2 tablespoons liquid castile soap (or biodegradable liquid dish soap) Water Place the onion, garlic, peppermint, and cayenne in a blender, and pulverize it. Allow the mixture to soak/steep for a couple hours (optional, but do it if you can), then strain with a fine mesh strainer. Add the onion/garlic mixture to a one-gallon contain (an old milk jug or vinegar jug will work), add the soap, and enough water to make one gallon. Pour into a spray bottle and spritz on any plants being attacked by bugs. Spray 1-2 times per week, or after a heavy rain.

always grow beans away from other vegetables.. those bugs are notorious for legumes.. My grandma's neighbor had these before.. He used vinegar and clove oil diluted in water.. to prevent them from getting on the leaves.. be careful not to put pure vinegar on plants it will cause burn.. clove kills vinegar kills and bugs HATE the smell of both

They are sucking the life out of my bush bean plants. Your bean plants are what's attracting them. They are attracted to legumes. And they stink so bad. I've been spraying them with dish soapy water and drowning them in a cup of soapy water when I can. That seems to help. My beans seem to be recovering. Fingers crossed.

It would be a lo of work but after going over them with a vacuum again you could try covering them with Tulle fabric mesh ( the material they make wedding veils out of). You can buy bolts of it very inexpensively. I'm not that far from you in SC . I'm having pest issues too. I use a Ryobi hand held vacuum and have been going after the squash bugs on an ongoing basis.

At this point, sounds like you tried everything you could, I would hit it with Seven by Bayer, I understand you don't want to, but if you don't. you are risking the rest of your crop. Good luck! The bug needs to be id'ed , local nursey with a plant doctor on staff? Co-op exten. service? I like Seven because of no smell, I spray at dusk because of honey bees. Please let us know how you fair in this, thanks for filming.

My slips have done better than I grew myself, but I’m so curious because I had bought these mail order slips and none of them had to leave so I was so confused as to how to even plant them They came in a set of six and not one single slip had leaves on it. They looked like just sticks.

I had my first Candy Roaster Squash several years ago. I bought it from a market in Easley, SC that got it from a farmer in NC. It was so big and heavy I think I paid over $25 for it. I saved some seeds and planted a few the next spring in a raised bed and couldn't believe , like you showed in the video, how quickly the vines took off. They grew outside the bed and all over the yard. I had the fruit resting on patio furniture and the vines were all over the place. I think they might be one of the most fun and exciting squash varieties to watch grow.

In Vancouver my yellow potato sprouted eyes under a grow lamp pretty quickly. In the dirt bag it's going nuts! But the red is still trying to barely sprout. I removed it from the same dirt bag when it didn't do anything because it was starting with the grow lamp too, but too slow. Now I'm skunked with the red. Not sprouting with the grow lamp (and a bit of water). Maybe I'll just plant it in the spare container again and wait. Any ideas on yellow vs red? Maybe it just needs old friend darkness and full moisture instead of inducing a "plant" with the lamp. Nice and cool outside too, so there's that. I'm throwing it back outside in a different container. The cheap pepper isn't fully utilizing that pot anyway.

This is my first year growing sweet potatoes. I planted some local, organic sweet potatoes in soil just like you a few weeks ago (from the crop I've been buying and eating all winter), and the slips have been taking off like crazy! I wanted to figure out the best way to harvest the slips for planting, and your video was perfect. I'll be planting 45 slips in nine 25 gallon grow bags (5 per bag) with the goal of harvesting 45 pounds. Thank you!
