Fifth Media Key: Inspiring The fifth media key “reminds us that there is more to media than simply being entertained or killing time. It challenges us to use media to inspire and be inspired, to draw closer to God and draw others closer to Him as well” (Gan 94). The producers of Up did a wonderful job at portraying this media key. Throughout the movie, Charles and his dogs are attempting to kidnap a bird and he was paranoid that anyone who came to Paradise Falls was also after the bird. When Carl and Russell came to Paradise Falls to attempt to achieve Carl and Ellie’s dream of visiting, they found the bird, that Russell named “Kevin” and he was determined to keep him safe from being kidnapped and killed by Charles and his dogs. This goes far beyond just entertaining the audience, but it inspires the audience to look to God in times of trouble. Russell could not keep the bird safe on his own, he needed higher help, and that help comes from God. This teaches the audience that we can not do everything on our own, we need to rely on God, we need to look to God to help us get through our adventures. With the help of God, with the help of others, it helps us to get through things a little bit easier because we know that we have someone to lean on, someone who we know will be there to support us and to cheer us on. The movie Up also shows the fifth media key, inspiring, with Carl. Carl is old and not in the best health condition, but he is determined to get his house to Paradise Falls. Ellie has wanted to do this ever since she was a child. His determination throughout the movie is very inspiring, showing that age and health does not deter you from attempting to achieve your goal. Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed “By ‘best’ they mean…the films with the most professional editing, convincing acting, thoughtful directing, and engaging writing” (Gan 99). The producers of Up did a fantastic job with skillfully developing the movie. With the bright colors of the balloons on Carl’s house, to the specific details put onto the wilderness explorer patches on Russell’s uniform, it is clear that time and effort was put into producing this movie. The emotion that is shown throughout the movie portrays how people would deal with them in real life situations. For example, when Ellie was dying, the emotion on Carl’s face was that of losing someone who means a lot to you, which is what happened. Likewise, it shows the loneliness someone can experience after losing a loved one. The producers also did an excellent job with the animation of the jungle scenes. The time it took to skillfully produce something as simple as a leaf was done so well. Similarly, Kevin, the bird, has beautiful designs as well. Her feathers and even how she runs portrays birds in the real world jungle. The producers took their time with this editing and it shows with the popularity and positive reviews of it. The editing creates a fun experience and environment for the viewer and that reflects well on the movie overall. Seventh Media Key: Motivated by and Relevant to Experience “It gives us characters with depth, who resemble ourselves, or people we know with all our hopes, dreams, strengths, talents, and quirks. It also places those characters in situations that, at their heart, are similar to situations we find ourselves in” (Gan 118). Up gives so many different scenes that a huge variety of people can relate to. For example, everyone either has, or will have to experience, dealing with the loss of a loved one. Seeing it portrayed in a movie helps people relate to the characters because it is something that they have lived through, they know the feeling, and thus, they can relate to it because of their experience. Another way the movie portrays this media key is the life situations Carl and Russell are in. Carl was never able to have children, and Russell has an absent dad who never answers his calls. When they meet, Russell portrays the role as the child Carl never had, and Carl acts as a father figure for Russell, as the dad he never really had. This can catch the attention of those who also were not able to have children, or for children who were raised by a single parent. People watching this movie who have experience with those themes can not only relate to the characters, but also see what they characters do to overcome it, and it might inspire or motivate them to do the same. Up shows the ups and downs of life which can make it known and make it realistic for the person watching the movie. The movie portrays grieving, but also healing, and that there is always hope after a loved one dies. In conclusion, the movie Up is a wonderful move for everyone. It portrays real life situations that people have either gone through, or will go through at some point. The producers did a wonderful job at creating a movie that is engaging, but also top terrier animation skills. The colors match the mood of each scene, for example, lots of bright colors for happy scenes, and dark colors for more serious and heartful scenes. I think the general audience would appreciate the movie being reviewed the way I did because it gives people new insights. It helps them realize a connection or a hidden theme that they wouldn’t have thought of otherwise. Overall, Up is a great movie, and I recommend it for people who want a movie that will not only make them laugh, but also make them think, and relate on an emotional level to the characters.

It depends on how you're framing it. I also like the Gargoyles to. But I can't stand Dory in Finding Nemo (2003), yeah I went there (Even when I was a kid I hated Dory) (However I hated the Gargoyles in Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) but that's a rant for another time). I know a lot of people anecdotally who like the Gargoyles. But let's be honest most the hate for the Gargoyles comes from the internet. Sure I'm not the only who likes the Gargoyles and while they do have their fans and defenders, but they are in the minority (or possibly silent majority). If you're talking about the internet than yeah a majority of people hate the Gargoyles. If you're talking about in non-internet circles than you'll find a decent amount of people who do like them and aren't just bandwagoners (I'm not saying everyone who hates the Gargoyles are bandwagoners, and if people genuinely don't like them than that's ok and I'm not shaming them for it. But let's be honest. A lot of them are bandwagoners).

They’re not gargoyles, they’re grotesques.

I am not a big fan of them. I don't hate them, but they do cause tonal problems, something that Dory doesn't do in Finding Nemo. Their song "A Guy Like You" is one of the worst songs I have ever heard in a Disney movie playing during a dark scene of Paris being burned down. I don't need to hear "Oh. But this was the purpose.", because that doesn't make this song any less annoying and tonally out of place, because at least the slapstick scenes were easy to forgive, and the funny songs like the "Feast of Fools" and "The Court of Miracles" actually felt more consistent with the characters who were singing them, as thos people were outcasted by Frollo and wanted to make things better for themselves.

@@captainmarvelwilson508first of all just because Dory “doesn’t cause tonal problems” doesn’t mean she’s funny, she’s still annoying, obnoxious, unfunny, cringeworthy, and useless constantly making every situation worse and telling the same jokes over and over when they weren’t even funny the first time. Also giving her a disability is such a gross justification to justify her obnoxious behavior. I guarantee you if Dory didn’t have a disability and still behaved the way she people would have hated her. They obviously gave her a disability in order to guilt trip people into thinking she was funny when she’s really not. Second of all here’s my debunk of that point: “The Gargoyles Ruin The Tone of The Movie & The Song A Guy Like You Is Out of Place” DEBUNKED: *Let me clarify. I’m talking about the Gargoyles in THIS movie and the Berlin stage play. Not the horrible no good very bad unnecessary piece of shit sequel. I hated them in the sequel*. I like the three Gargoyles in the movie. I found them to be funny and charming. My favorite one being Hugo voiced by Jason Alexander. While they're not laugh out hilarious or anything, but they were funny to me at least. Fuck Dory from Finding Nemo (2003) (I'm a fan of Ellen DeGeneres and I found her to be annoying and obnoxious)! While I’m glad the Gargoyles were in the movie, and I will defend them till the day I die. That being said I would have been ok if they didn’t exist because your two leads Quasimodo and Esmeralda are likeable characters who carry the movie and I give a shit of what’s going on. To be blunt I didn’t like The Victor Hugo novel because I found it kinda boring and Quasimodo and Esmeralda aren’t very likeable in the novel. If you had put the Gargoyles as they are in this film and put them into the boring ass Victor Hugo novel, the novel would still suck and still be boring and pretentious, this also applies for the overrated shitty American Stage play. I will admit I do think they are better and funnier in the Berlin stage play and King’s Academy stage play given that they are confirmed to be in Quasimodo’s imagination and their humor is toned down and not over the top like it is in the movie. Do I get the hate for the Gargoyles? Yes and no. Those criticisms being "They're annoying and obnoxious. They're not funny and cringey. They're too over the top. Their attempts at adult humor are off putting" - People who don't like The Gargoyles. I don't agree with that, but I understand why people feel that way. Although I found them to be funny and charming, that being said I'm aware that they're humor isn't going to be everyone especially when they try to tell more adult jokes. The other criticism "They sacrifice the dark tone and ruin it and they don't fit the movie". Umm how? They're barely in the movie and they're very easy to skip. No complains about Condiment Man being out of place in Batman The Animated Series (1992-1996/1997-2000) or Mr. Mxyzptlk being out of place in Superman The Animated Series (1996-1999). The three Gargoyles in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) do the same exact thing. If they're going to criticize The Gargoyles for being out of place in Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame than they should complain about Condiment Man being out of place in Batman The Animated Series (1992-1996/1997-2000) or Mr. Mxyzptlk being out of place in Superman The Animated Series (1996-1999). I know movies are subjective, but this seems hypocritical to me. No one also complains about Baby Herman in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1990) for being out of place. Also, they don’t contradict the message of the movie itself. When Laverne calls Hugo “The fat ugly stupid one” after she calls Quasimodo “The cute one” it’s used to comfort Quasimodo and make him feel good about himself. Quasimodo is still very insecure about his looks at this point and time in the story. They’re trying to build him up and make him more confident himself. It is used to support Quasimodo and has nothing to do with the film’s message whatsoever. I also want to address the song A Guy Like You that the Gargoyles sign in the movie, even the very few people who like the Gargoyles don’t like the song. Honestly, I like the song. Not gonna lie it is my least favorite song in the movie, but I do like it. I think it's catchy and quite heartfelt. Do I get the hate for it? Yes and no. I the get that song is too over the top and not everyone's cup of tea. However, people say it's out of place is lubricious, especially if you DON’T take it out of context. While I agree that it should have been placed after Quasimodo helps Esmeralda escape the cathedral and right before Heaven's Light/Hellfire rather than being placed during Judge Frollo's manhunt (Even the very few people who like the Gargoyles also make that argument). However, I don’t think it's out of place and fits perfectly fine if people take into context. In the context of the song A Guy Like You, Quasimodo is rightfully worried for Esmeralda's safety given that Paris is literally burning caused by Judge Frollo and the Gargoyles are trying to cheer up Quasimodo. Quasimodo is very concerned for Esmeralda's safety and they're trying to cheer up. How is it any different to real life situations when you're sad or angry or stressed out about something bad happening to someone wanting to be cheered up (Whether it be watching a movie you like, going to a friend's house etc)? Or watching or hearing something horrific on the news and wanting to change the channel to watch something that puts you in a good mood to cheer up? Also, the song doesn't last very long and it's the shortest song in the movie. What the Gargoyles are trying to do is equivalent to those real-life situation examples I mentioned. Also, the song is supposed to be cringeoworthy. You want the Gargoyles to stop singing it. Especially making Quasimodo overconfident with Esmeralda loving him back romantically. The filmmakers have said this in the documentary. You can watch it on KZbin. I recommend it. Not gonna lie, I do prefer the Berlin/King’s Academy version of the Song A Guy Like You given that it’s still toned down and not over the top like it is in the movie, but I still enjoy thing song despite being my least favorite song in the movie. Like I've said, I know movies are subjective and it's ok that people don't agree with me, but I find some of these criticisms to be hypocritical epesically when you compare the Gargoyles to Condiment King from the 90s Batman cartoon, Mr. Mxyzsptlik from the 90s Superman cartoon and Baby Herman from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I’ll get more depth of this movie when I get to my number one pick. To be perfectly honest, I think most people who hate the Gargoyles also say they do so they can pander to the Gargoyle hating circle jerk and just hate them because it’s the cool thing to do. Not all of them, but the majority of them are. Also say what you want about the Gargoyles at least they’re not making the same jokes over and over like Dory in Finding Nemo and unlike the God Awful Unnecessary sequel direct to video sequel Hunchback of The Dame II (2002) the Gargoyles are easier to skip IN THIS MOVIE than they are Hunchback of The Dame II (2002).
