Put some of that purple stuff directly on your brass and see what happens...it for sure reacts with the metals in the brass and turns it all sorts of colors. No way I'd put it on my brass again. I will try it on my pins though. The Zep citrus cleaner works well on the brass and pins though.

I see you went back to the Ball handle. I too am an old Lee user operator, and def prefer the ball to the lever. I even bought a spare ball lever years ago to replace a handle, but need to get some gas for the torch to bend it properly. Thanks for the tips and info.

Good catch! This handel is off of my Classic turret. I kept the 10deg bushings from the ultimate turret. it fits perfect that way and misses the Safety prime feeder. At first I liked the handel but over time I felt like there was too much lever, twist and spring. Back to the ball and its a way. more positive feel.

My 1970s MEC jr is the newest of my presses. Mine is a 20ga. I have a 12ga Texan press, a pair of Pacific presses in 12 and 16 and a monster cast iron 12ga press that the name escapes me. It weights more than the other 4 presses combined. It was great for processing hulls. I haven't touched it in years though. The others get used every now and then though.

I started my reloading with shotgun as well. After my first gun a .22 bolt my parents bought me a 20 Guage 870 and I soon ended up with a MEC 600 Jr. like the one you have, and looking back was just as inept or worse than you. Killed a lot of doves, rabbits ducks, squirrels and barn pigeons though and plenty of White Flyer clay pigeons too with those less than perfect reloads.

I started back in 2018 reloading shot gun then moved onto pistol and now rifle..... I found reloading shot gun loads fun and easy. I started on a Lee Load All press and then moved to a Mec 600 Jr because I found trying to crimp new hulls were difficult with the Load All. I love reloading for buckshot and slugs. Minnesota is great for shot gun hunting.. I had someone 3D print me some powder adapters. better than buying each ones for $5-6. Ballistic Products Inc is the best place to get all your shotgun components..... like that brass star crimper. I like to find another older machine for a stand alone prep machine...

Dedicated 410, 20, 16, x2- 12-2 3/4, 12 3" and a 10ga. Most MEC 600's. I pretty quickly bought the adjustable charge bars with accept-ion of my trap load machine.

It's the way to go. However now that you can nearly instantly and for only a couple pennies print any size of bushing you want it's less of an annoyance to have a bushing charge bar to me. A couple people have made parametric and bushing generators for obviously press brands too.

More Importantly your die set up sucks. set up your seating die so it bottoms out on the press. before the ram stops hit. 🙄I'd recommend using Lee bullet seating dies that don't have the stupid roll crimp built in.
@TreeTopFlier25 күн бұрын
You are correct, the dead length seating die from Lee mitigates the stop issue on Lee presses. So does a light touch on the stops. But, not all seating dies, even from Lee, are "dead length" so choking up on thr die setting to avoid the crimp is common. I made the video to help reloaders understand the Idiosyncracies of Lee presses.

I feel like LEE is like a software developer that puts out a product and depends on users to provide the beta testing and then they try to engineer out the problems. I own and use a number of LEE reloading products, including the most feared progressive press, the LoadMaster. The all time best product I use is the original LEE hand primer. The new hand priming tool is much worse. It flips primers on their side and upside down 6 to 7 percent of the time. The worst thing I think LEE has produced is any of the on press priming systems. I don't even attempt to try user fixes any longer. It's no wonder LEE archived the LoadMaster press. My LoadMaster runs like a charm as long as I am not priming on it. I have a "green" single stage press with a primer tube that is pointed at my face but it has never failed. It is circa 1974. I just wonder if the LEE priming system engineer is proud of his work or if he woke up one morning and said "crap, my name is on that forever"?!
@TreeTopFlier23 күн бұрын
You can hear my frustration at the end of the video. I really like this press and I've used it almost exclusively since I got it, but the release could have been so much smoother and a big win for the folks at Lee. Instead, I think it ended up confirming peoples hesitations with their products. Im not a fan of the six pack pro either for priming reasons. Too temperamental.

I was doing research on what turret press to buy, 4, 5, 6 7, place or whatever. This press is great, you can change out the number of turret positions without having to buy a whole different press. You have made my mind up which press to buy.

You can get the cleanest results by using a small amount of dawn dish washing detergent and a small amount of brasso. I also put 4 ,1 inch squares of a dish scrubbing pad. Sponge on one side and scotch bright on the other. Looks like new😮.
@ShnickАй бұрын
For the Frankford Arsenal rotary tumbler, I use 8 lbs pins, not 5. Teaspoon of dawn, 9mm caseful of lemishine and a 2 hour run. Separate the media using a frankford arsenal quick n ez media separator installed in a 5 gallon bucket. Tumble brass, dump into the separator, rinse in the tub and it all goes down the drain. Dry brass in a food dehydrator after a shake in a towel. Brass gets shiny, stainless pins get cleaned too.

Can you explain how you use the graphite dry lube spray, spray top to bottom minus hopper or spray on Que tips ?
@TreeTopFlierАй бұрын
This spray lube goes on wet and dries pretty quick to a dry graphite film. I usually just spray it into the cap (over the trash...it's messy) then dip a qtip in it and paint it on all surfaces, from the drum down...to include the powder through die. Once it's painted on it will dry pretty fast.

Great video. I have an old Lee Reloading Press and was looking to get a progressive, and now I like the turret presses. Which Lee Turret Press do you recommend for loading 223 and 9mm for someone getting into reloading?
@TreeTopFlierАй бұрын
There's now 3 Lee turret presses. Value Turret, Classic Turret, and the new Ultimate Turret. All will do the cartridges you mentioned. The Value press is the cheapest and a pretty nice option. If you think you might want to do larger cartridges in the future the classic might be the way to go. If you don't mind the extra price and complexity or think you may want to add a bullet feeder then the ultimate would be the way to go.

Been reloading for 20 years. Forget the turret press. Its too much to keep track of all at once. Buy 2 single stage presses, one for deprime/resize and 1 for bullet seating. Case prep and cleaning gets in the way of turret press operations anyway since you have to deprime to clean the primer pocket and trim.
@TreeTopFlierАй бұрын
I have three single stage presses and three turret presses. I still use the turret most. I do like to size and trim ahead for rifle using a single stage. In that case I just leave the sizing die out of the turret and prime only in the first position. Then it's three more pulls to a completed round. Unlike a progressive press, it's just one cartridge at a time. The point I try to make in this video is that you can make cartridges on a turret press and achieve the same level of consistency and quality as a single stage, which I think would surprise many as it did me.

Important tip: avoid any cleaning solution with ammonium hydroxide like the plague (it is very common in metal “shampoos” sold along wet tumblers as an additive to common dish washer): it attacks the metal and leaves a thin layer of grey/silver residue on the brass that will stay in your fingers and inside your dies. I found out this by accident: when I ran out of the “shampoo” that came with the tumbler, I used common dish washer detergent (like Dawn in the US) since the other ingredient was the same. Only then I realized how this batch of brass wasn’t making my fingers dirty. I always thought that the stainless steel media was probably responsible for this residue and throughly cleaned it with degreaser to no avail. One last thing: some polishing products like Brasso (used in dry tumblers) have <2% of ammonium hydroxide. While in theory this could make the brass brittle, I still haven’t seen evidence that the stress corrosion is significant enough to cause neck splits before normal stretching from multiple resizings forces the case to be retired anyway. Ammonium hydroxide is a common cleaner for brass, but it was not intended for cartridges.
