Yes, you are right about that. I do agree, for a full bath, the entire spine should be done. It was a rash decision thinking the tengujo will secure the still attached parts but too much manipulation and got a split in some areas that were easy fixes. In the future definitely. Thanks for stopping by Michael.

Very interesting to see that the neutralization of the acids is NOT accompanied by a dramatic change in page color, at least not while wet. In other words, you can't tell it's deacidified by appearance. Usually, the wet, tan paper has a kind of dank smell. Did that smell go away by the third spray down? Perhaps smell fails as a diagnostic as well.
@peteralachi3888
@peteralachi3888 10 күн бұрын
The dank smell did go down a bit but not totally after the second spray. Colors maintained nicely after they dried up. The wraps were mechanically sound and didn’t suffer color loss. One wrap that I attempted 3 washes on off camera was slightly lighter and the colors were also lighter (I’m not a huge fan of whitening or bleaching paper). Its pH was between 8-9. Overall, the minimal intervention therapy got rid of a lot of the acid and left a mild Calcium Hydroxide reserve in the paper, elongating the book’s life for many more years. That was my goal!
@Adrift.
@Adrift. 10 күн бұрын
Very informational Prof Peter. Do you think it's possible that the wraps would have become more alkaline from a full immersive bath rather than a simple spray down, or is the absorption similar either way? Like the music choice by the way. Reminds me of the theme music from some Italian 60s film like Danger Diabolik!
@peteralachi3888
@peteralachi3888 10 күн бұрын
@@Adrift. Hi Jason, yes, it may be the case. I measured pH on other wraps from other projects that did experience a bath and their pH was higher after a single 5 min exposure. I think the “acid dump” from the wrap in a bath is more dramatic than a static application as I did. But I wanted minimal intervention with this book. Btw, the cover to this Detective Comics didn’t experience a water bath either. Just a 1:4 quick Calcium Hydroxide spray after light dry cleaning. Some books warrant a more careful approach and this was one.

Thanks for this info- good stuff. I have the litmus paper and will be trying this. How much of an alkaline reserve should we get into the paper?
@peteralachi3888
@peteralachi3888 10 күн бұрын
Hi Don, a little more than my pH if you can. I tried 3 washes on one of the wraps which I didn’t show and its colors suffered slightly so I pulled back to 2 washes instead which left a pH of 8 alongside the Calcium hydroxide reserve. The 3 washes wrap was slightly higher pH but not by much. Calcium carbonate may be another option to try. And wraps from another book might need different lengths treatments.

Thank you Dr Paul! Appreciate it. I should note that Jerry also brought up a similar point. But allow me to explain the logic of keeping the slurry wet. I did buy flat absorbant mats that do a great job at absorbing excess water and have used them in a prior video. Problem they were too quick at absorbing and didn’t allow me time to rearrange the pulp fibers in the spot so the finish cast is even. Sponges around the spot, while they do absorb some of the liquid, are placed strategically and give longer time to do the fiber rearranging. That extra time you get when the stuff is still wet allows for better distribution of the pulp and more even cast! Thanks again for stopping by Dr Paul!

Wow, the pulp matches up seamlessly. You really did do a great job. Kind of a silly question. When you use plexiglass, is it straight on the comic? Do you still use the paper towel drying approach?
@peteralachi3888
@peteralachi3888 19 күн бұрын
Thank you! Before placing into the press, the wrap is sandwiched between Reemay sheets, then paper towels, plexiglass, and finally wood boards. When the wrap is almost dry, I remove the layers and place the wrap in the press between plexiglass sheets to smooth out the leaf casting. It works well, though if the leaf casting isn’t set yet and there’s too much water, the plexiglass will stick and damage the work so it’s something I learned to assess over the years.

Thank you, Jerry! Yes, indeed, you can also do that. In this case, the pulp and water were exactly measured and mixed for the final application so that the leaf cast thickness matches with the wraps’ thickness. The results, which I will show on 11/5 will demonstrate that the little amount of pulp needed was enough to support these triangular losses. It really worked beautifully. Yes, it can be. But like anything in conservation, it’s part of the preparation if you opt for specific amounts. You can setup an excel sheet with these data and let excel then return the values. @Adrift. The thickness of the pulp isn’t an issue for a lot of conservator and it is then ok to proceed with leaf casting even though you don’t know about how much pulp you’re adding. I did that for years and in looking at some of my work, I definitely overdid it with pulp on some books. Now that I measure, it truly makes a world of difference. It’s like anything in life, you’ll get used to measuring. Having said this, I’m trying to come up with a model that can be used across specific age group and publisher. For example, the pulp recipe for the interior of silver age 1964-66 should be this number and the pulp recipe for the cover for the same period should be that number and so on and so forth.

Thank you Dr Paul, yes, absolutely! One part I didn’t show is pH measurement of the Abaca solution after processing. It was close to 8. The Abaca I buy from Carriage House is bleached so has that alkaline pH and didn’t think CaOH2 was needed. For the interior wraps I will be using a cocktail of a little Abaca and artist cotton paper. I think that one will need the CaOH2. Thank you, right on point!

It really came out sturdy and matched with the general cover thickness. I think once it’s done for a particular book title/age like in this case PEP Comics Bronze Age, I could perhaps use the same approach and it’ll work for similar books!

Thank you Dr Paul! Moisture content in the paper is clearly up and down, especially in the third installment, where I had expected some gain but the weight of the cover went down by about 0.1 g. Great work as always. We have discussed the most important metric is the GSM (grams per square meter) as related to thickness of the paper you are trying to match. The only problem with you formula is that we are not taking into account (I believe I am using the right terms) the liquid pulp viscosity - or the amount of pulp within a given volume of solution. If you solution has more pulp then it will dry thicker as compared to an amount of solution that has little pulp (i.e., more water). Once that water dries you should have thinner paper. Just a thought - we are going down a deep, deep rabbit hole. LOL BUT, I guess you are accounting for that with your calculation of your test patch. You will just need to make sure your pulp have not settled to an irregularly dispersed volume of water to pulp.

Hi Dr Paul, this was uploaded before I got the Caliper. I had ca based on quick math that the thickness of the wrap was 0.12 mm. It turned out to be slightly less (0.1 mm). But the fills were at 0.12 mm, as predicted by the math model, which was a surprise. So the math definitely works. There’s then the personal preference when you fill these in. Is there a need for an extra amount here or there? It is up to the pulp used in the recipe and how homogeneous it looks. Sometimes, the pulp doesn’t get distributed evenly with these high-end fibers and you will need to spend a good amount of time getting them distributed right. Luckily you have the time to do it because of the formation aid slows down the drainage.
