not worth $5 if the blade comes loose. that's dangerous. I found an old one and the plastic parts look like they are falling apart. The rest of it is heavy steel and painted nicely, but I can't seem to get a blade to stay in place. I think the best place for the one I've got is in the garbage

An EXCELLENT video sir...very informative and the filming was awesome. But where did you acquire the "guillotine" lever to position and lock the Kodiak tool platform in to the Vari-Grind base plate? In the Kodiak video Ken mentions the guillotine lever is available, but can't seem to find it. I've sent E-mails to them and they have not responded back. Thank you.

What Tea Lights do you use? Ours are 1.5 inch diamter and dont have a flange. Video was very well done. Thanks!!!
@haroldsworld11 ай бұрын
I usually look right after Christmas at the big box stores (lowes, home depot they are the cheapes although I have found them in Michaels and holly lobby). The ones I used in this one I collected over the last couple of years. If you go to amazon and search for tea lights 1.4”, they are close and all you have to do is hit it with a box scraper and take a little off the sides. In fact, that would be a more accurate way to size the candles. All the ones I have looked at are straight side.

Enjoyed the video! Picked up a few tips I will use from now on. The threaded insert on the jamb chuck is a great idea! Thanks!
@haroldsworld11 ай бұрын
I can’t take credit for the threaded insert; I saw Jimmy Allen (cool dude) of D-Way tools do that in a club demo and it prompted me to buy his mandrel he used from him. They do not list it on their website, you need to email them (Jimmy) if you want one. They are about $75 and comes with two blocks with inserts already installed. I have found the brass inserts on Niles bottle stopper site for about a buck and they work too. But what a brilliant idea. Oh and thanks for watching

This looks fantastic. If you had a laser engraver, or could get in touch with someone who had one, I could easily see a set of four laser-cut inserts at 1" circles to go into each of the four side holes. This could serve as small customization, either for the holidays or with initials for weddings, or add a piece of colored film inside to change the lantern's color.

This will work if the center is off left to right in the horizontal direction. However if the centers are off ijn the vertical direction, it will not. Also, each time you loosen the tail stock it can be off a bit.
@haroldsworld11 ай бұрын
If you have a problem in the vertical direction it can only be fixed by some machine work on the bed or you need a new lathe. So you only need to be concerned with the horizontal direction. Loosening the tail stock is usually not the issue. All lathed do that and will return to center. You really can’t turn without doing that. I move my tail stock a lot when working on a piece. Now the headstock is a different story, because this one rotates, you should check it every time you loosen it. Which is why I went to a lathe without a rotating head. Thank you for watching.
@DennyNebgen11 ай бұрын
my point is that Nova could be a bit more careful in what they produce or have produced in China. The alignment issue is one that could have been avoided if they had the slot between the bed rails precision ground so that the head stock and tail stock could not get out of line. Even if you use their tool and align the head stock and tail stock, and then loosen the tail stock and slide it away from the head stock, the next time you bring it back to the head stock it may be out of line as there is quite a bit of play between the bed rails and nothing to keep it true. Don't get me wrong. I really like my Nova Galaxy with the way the speed is controlled and the drive system works but, there are definitely some areas that I feel Nova has dropped the ball.

@DennyNebgen Жыл бұрын
These lathes are great but, they could be better. The fact that they did not grind the slot between the rails on the bed and keep the head stock and tail stock closer toleranced to the center of the bed rails. Or, like you said that every time you move the head stock out of alignment or more often. Use the alignment tool. This is a down side of Nova's communication.

Do you have measurement of the base, body, hat you could share?
@haroldsworld2 жыл бұрын
The block I used is a 2”X 2” X 5.5” You could get away with a shorter block if you did it between centers. Diameters The base is approximately 1.85” The belly is approximately 1.85” The head is approximately 1.50” The hat brim is approximately 1.75” and the hat itself is approximately 1.25” My overall length is approximately 4.70” There is really no magic to these number. If it look good use it. I always make some minor adjustment base off my eye. The base looks bigger but it is just the cove that makes it look that way. I probably should have added them to the video, but it was a quicky. Thank you for watching my video. I hope this helped you. It just dawned on me you might have meant the lengths. These are all approximately Hat is 1.25” Brim is 0.20” Head is 1.10” Body is 1.60” Base is 0.50”

Mistakes happen. Seems the part needed more bite in the chuck to compensate for the side ways force of the cutter
@haroldsworld2 жыл бұрын
We left that in on purpose, you learn more from the mistakes. In this case the wood and chucks were provided by the club and we didn't have a bigger chuck on hand. In hindsight we should have used a lager chuck on the green word. We solved that problem at the AAW symposium in Chattanooga as we both purchased an Axminster 114 stainless steel chuck. Massive and with the stainless steel you don't have to worry about the water in the wood. And who doesn't need an other chuck. LOL. Thanks for watch and the comment. Harold
