got into DnD from Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance. decided to play the original and it was OK. i enjoyed the characters but the combat was just awful imo. They should have stuck with turn based grid system. Once I got to BG2, i couldnt stand to play anymore when the enemy would spam cast Time Stop and you have no counterspell.... it was just tedious

I see Pix referenced in the credits, so I gotta ask: are you part of/familiar with the Dos Game Club?
@MrEdders123Күн бұрын
Not sure, is that related to the MS-DOS Project? I used the "Pix's Origin Adventures" site a few times and referenced a question he asked Garriott, although that was actually mentioned on the Ultima codex iirc. 🙃

I doubt a gun would be a 'magic stick that kills from afar' when they use pipes as weapons.
@MrEdders1239 күн бұрын
The Mexica had blowguns and Atlatl (spear-throwers) during the Spanish conquest, but according to most accounts didn't understand how the conquistadors' arquebus and culverin worked, so the game's presentation of how gunpowder weapons would be perceived seems plausible enough.

Its funny how watching your videos I realize even though I recognize so many of these games and hit with waves of nostalgia.... I never beat any of them LOL. Aside from Ultima Underworld 1, Myst or Return to Zork, I don't think I finished any PC games in the 90s. Also I could care less about Worlds of Ultima; I wasn't interested at the time and not really interested now but your deep dive research always entertains and educates and provides so much insight that I wouldn't have been privy to otherwise! Great video, great channel, can't wait for the next one.

It's an excellent book but his prejudices definitely come through (X work is valuable because it's proto-feminist, Y work is trashy and chauvinist and imperialist and barely worth discussing etc.). Researching the topic, it was interesting seeing how scholarship of the more popular authors, like Burroughs, was sort of "colonized" in the sense of books and articles first being done by fans or people influenced by them, but a lot of later stuff being "academic" and casually discussing topics like "homosocial bonding among middle-class white men" 🤔

Had to watch it in several segements over those days the amount of information, research, references is mind-boggling. Hard to say if in a good or bad way, because at times you speak like monotonous lecturer so my mind starts to doze off. Perhaps you need a little bit more mind breaks (usually jokes) for viewer like "Hm..." at 3:52:52.

I can understand why you might find The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen to be fairly contrived, though I'd argue that the implausibility of the setting is intentional. If you think of it as a parody of series like Justice League of America that essentially frames the characters as the antecedents of modern superheroes it may be a bit easier to accept the contrivances, assuming that you're not already approaching it through that lens. That being said, it does carry a lot of the problematic aspects of literature from the period so it's up to you if you feel like it's justified as satire or if it's a deal breaker. Obviously, it's okay if you just don't enjoy it as a matter of taste.
@MrEdders12314 күн бұрын
Just to clarify, when I quoted the movie writer calling it "problematic", he was referring to people not getting the references in the 21st century, rather than all the rape and slurs etc. I still liked reading the initial volumes in spite of feeling too meta, but lost interest when they did a time jump to drop Quartermain etc. and then jumped ahead again fifty or sixty years (never even bothered finishing the 60s or 70s one)

Another fine video comes to a close. For the most part I agree that Savage Empire leans more toward my interests of the two. That said, I'd much rather this game existed than not, it's a gem in its own right, for the right person, my personal preferences aside. My preferences most certainly don't discount 1800s attempts at science fiction either, it's more the follow through I find issue with than the concept. On subject of it's point and click fused with RPG elements, I'm reminded of the Quest for Glory series. For that matter Heroine's Quest, Quest for Infamy, and even Mage's initiation that have inspiration in QfG. I view that lot as well done fusions of RPG and point and click adventure. I won't insult King's Quest, or others, but QfG always managed to ground it's puzzles better, for my money, in things your character could do, be it spells or skills, or even stat checks, if not item requirements as is more typical fare. So I just do t have the venom for the fusion that some have, in dome ways I view it no different than other additions like crafting, gathering, farming, building, keep management, romances, buying up property, starting a family, or kingdom management, among other additions, that we have seen RPGs add over the years. Babbling aside, thanks for another lovely video, most certainly worth the wait.

The ironic self-deprecation at 1:36:33 gave me a hearty laugh. It's a cruel criticism but this game just makes me wish someone else took a crack at the concept. The story of the alien civilization and how it interacted with the human expeditions is pretty cool. A less obtuse take, less obsessed with cramming in as many historical celebrities as possible, and more focused on a satisfying gameplay loop would be nice.

Finally finished this. If this was made even more academic as revenge, I must say I've enjoyed it easily as much as your look into Empire. Though I will admit to getting lost to some degree around 5.2D to 5.2N because of the breadth of different aspects you had to talk about. Bonus points for using "Warren Spector" and "historical waifu" in one sentence lol. Thanks for the video!

After watching your Savage Empires episode, I actually kind of wanted to play it and thought the game seemed cool... I uh, don't want to play Martian Dreams. :p Also, all the disparate historical figures all just happening to be on Mars comes across as really contrived and cartoonish to me. Feels straight out of a Saturday morning children's cartoon.
@MrEdders12311 күн бұрын
Yeah, although that in itself is sort of appropriate in the sense it's paying homage to post-Victorian "ensemble" stories where a bunch of historical figures/cultural icons team up. I definitely would've preferred a more focused story exploring a smaller number of characters and themes.
@ProBreakers15 күн бұрын
By the time we got to U6, I would argue that the series was already mostly an adventure game, as the role play elements had already been so reduced as to be pointless. The stats and classes and all that was just an afterthought.
