I'm not adverse to a high quality erotic game, but when they pump up the upper body of the females to such proportions that it would give them serious back issues in real life, it takes away from any immersion I might have felt while playing it. Long ago, when I was still a teenager, I had a friend who actually had to have her natural size reduced quite a bit in order to be able to function normally. Her back pains invalidated her to such extent that her medical insurance paid the entire procedure.

Finding this channel turned out to be this year's best surprise :) I was led here because of my love/obsession with Infinity Engine CRPG games, but then I stumbled upon one of my favourite games from my childhood. This game, for me at least, is the ultimate hidden gem, the definitive early 90s game that "only you played while everyone else was obsessed with some mainstream game [insert game title here]" It was also the first PC video game that I got on CD after hearing about its existence. This game was such an integral part of my early 90s video game life, I was a fan of Lynch's movie to be sure, but this title did everything to expand the magic of the movie while turning me into a lifelong fan of Herbert and Dune. I get why some critics, back in the day and today, criticize the odd mix of adventure and strategy but for me, at the time, it was quite original and unheard of. I still remember that eerie feeling of mystery as you leave your base and visit the first sietches and later, the satisfaction of finally battling the Harkonnens. As usual, I can't praise this review enough, specifically the thorough research that went into this video, in fact, I would honestly like to thank the author for finally introducing all of us to the background of how this game was actually made. You couldn't find much info back in the early 90s and I was always wondering how we got two completely different Dune-inspired video games in such a short time. While I did enjoy Dune II: The Battle for Arrakis and its legacy as the formative RTS title is unquestionable, for me personally, Cryo's Dune made a much deeper personal impact. So much so that I installed it a couple of years ago because I couldn't remember one scene and watching a long-play video didn't seem good enough. Lastly, thank you for giving us a double review, I wasn't aware of the other game. Great channel, keep it coming.
@MrEdders1232 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for your comments and praise! Regarding the background to this game, the French journalist Daniel Ichbiah (sp?) deserves a lot of the credit, as 80% of the Virgin/Cryo background info in the video comes from his book (never translated into English unfortunately). I'm also not sure whether I found the book via the wikipedia article or The Digital Antiquarian's article on the Dune series. The latter has a very thorough writeup that I decided not to use as I was worried about quoting a mistranslation or something - I spent a lot of time in DeepL translate and asking for help from native speakers on RPG Codex. The rest is from old magazines, interviews with Westwood and Virgin regarding Dune 2 (they mention the "other" studio sometimes), and old French documentaries/interviews with Cryo. I'm sure someone who speaks passable French could do a much better job than me (I couldn't find more than a single page of concept art for Dune, for example, but others might have better luck). I should also give credit to David Balsamique and Behind the Dune, as I only made this video to justify the porn game review

I feel David Lynch's Dune is pretty good despite its departure from the source material. Some of his choices might seem odd (e.g., the internal narratives), but I quite like them. It could be that I enjoy it as I saw the movie before I read the book.

Much as I love the atmosphere and most of the art of the original game. To the point it's one of my favourite visual adaptation of the books (which I used to absolutely adore)... But I don't particularly want a remake etc. What I would love to see however is a modern attempt at the same style of game. The narrative adventure game with tactical elements you engage in by actually traveling around your bases and being ontop of things. And that the kink-game makes the same original more playable with some simple updates, even if it downscaled the strategy aspect to a massive extent, gives me real hope for that.

The game design could be said to be comparable to Lords of Midnight (1984) which itself is an attempt to make a Lord of the Rings type game. The idea is that the game could be completed as an adventure by doing the equivalent of delivering the ring to mt doom or by mustering a large army on the map and winning a strategic campaign. Then it suggested that the "epic" victory would be to do both. The "epic" genre might include a lot of things which might seem boring to the modern ADHD friendly RTS/Cinematic mind, such as the well known epic poem of the Iliad having a whole book called the catalogue of ships which is just a big list of Greek dudes and their rides.

This. Sounds like a REALLY cool game. Like. The kind of thing that I would love to see a more polished version of sometime.
@shreksnow19182 жыл бұрын
That was definitely really interesting. The things I like most about your reviews are that you talk about the game’s development, the context for why certain things happened and what was going on at the time, and that it’s relatively free of bias/blinded by nostalgia with you giving praise where it’s needed while simultaneously essentially roaring what simply does not work (the gameplay definitely sounds like an awful experience). It would have been interesting to see what the cancelled sequel would have been like. They definitely world have made a lot of weird changes to the lore. It’s funny how bad the Harkonnens voices, outfits, and other stuff is. Too bad they’re basically a joke like you said. It’s so weird how a parody game is more faithful to the source material using different things in the lore to justify different events. I didn’t even know that existed until now. It’s weird how Flash games really range in quality in terms of art. Some look amazing with very good animation, while others are complete trash. 1:15:10 Chris Chan was arrested for that. We know from his jail letters he currently thinks he’s Jesus. When I first learned about Chris it made me really sad seeing how people were bullying an autistic man. Then as a learned more about him I began to realize what a truly terrible person he is, and started laughing more. Now after the Barb incident the only two things that make me feel bad for him are when the trolling went too far (Bluespike, the Idea Guys, and a few others), and when watching old footage of him as a kid/teen knowing what this poor kid would become (he was definitely screwed over because his parents were idiots, and the Internet allowed all kinds of people to mess with him). It’s funny how bizarre the faces are. It looks so bad😂 Dune has my favorite depiction of prophecy out of anything how it’s a mix of fabrications meant to control people, and actual prophecy albeit incompetent. In a way it reminds me of what they did in Morrowind where you aren’t the prophesied reincarnation of Lord Nerevar, but you can become him by quite literally mantling the myth. Dune’s commentary about how a charismatic figure/prophet impacting the world is another aspect I really like. I actually have personal experience with that because I grew up Mormon, and only recently found out the founder was a lying conman. It is so bizarre how the faith broke into a bunch of different beaches, and the largest one the Brighamites (that’s what I was from) were able to grow. This obvious farce has somehow survived into the modern era. Although, it’s definitely shrinking now that the Internet is a thing. Unless they reform it by shifting over to viewing the different stories as symbolic rather than literal and get rid of the backwards stuff it’s going to implode eventually. I actually have ancestors who crossed the plains and settled in Idaho/Utah. The historical Jesus definitely had the biggest impact on the world. It would be really interesting to see what the real person would think of what his small following became, and how radically different it is from the original teachings based in apocalyptic Judaism. I actually really liked the David Lynch movie. Even though it was weird, and took some odd liberties. As for the new film I still haven’t quite figured out what my thoughts on it are. It’s really too bad that so many things are trapped in licensing he’ll like that music, and the Dune games. There’s plenty of games I really want to play again, but don’t want to get all the overpriced old hardware necessary to play them. I played Dune 2 and just thought it was ok. It was fun, but very shallow. I’m definitely spoiled by newer rts games. But, I still really like old games despite being a zoomer (luckily I’m not the cringe tidepod eating kind, and I avoid social media like the plague). They’re an interesting experience. Amazing video! It will be cool to see what else is down the pipeline.

OLD COMMENT: (other bits are redacted too, but meh) "Ooo... Okay, lets see if you notice the difference between the floppy and the CD travel system... ;) Ah, no floppy version? The pre-rendered flight scene is a CD exclusive feature; apparently, in the floppy version, you can see sietches and other things you can stop at as you travel if you keep an eye out, but the nature of the FMV flight scenes can't account for this and can be regarded as inferior for offering significantly less player feedback. Frankly, when I learned about this change, I couldn't go back to the CD version, as the FMV flight sequences bloat the whole gameplay loop to the detriment of the title." NEW COMMENT: This is a pretty damn comprehensive coverage of the game. I'd have to watch it again to see if there was anything that you might've missed or neglected to comment on, but all in all, yeah, this is about as thorough as you can get without being bloated. Well done.

@@hanchiman The rough cut was 4hrs. Frank Herbert talked about some of the stuff that was cut in the foreword to the short story anthology "Eye" - "Filming Dune did something else. I have David to thank for teaching me to write screenplays. During that education, I was able to influence some decisions about the film, but I was unable to influence the ending or how much would be cut for the theater. From the approximately five hours of film in the original footage, only about two-fifths emerged from the cutting room. What was cut? Here's a partial list for the aficionados: The confrontation between Stilgar (Everett McGill) and Duke Leto (Jurgen Prochnow) where Stilgar spits on the table-the gift of his water. Development of the relationship between Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt) and Jessica (Francesca Annis). Most of the love story between Paul Maud'dib (Kyle MacLachlan) and Chani (Sean Young). The fight where Paul kills a Fremen and cries (giving water to the dead). Development of Kynes (Max Von Sydow) as the Imperial Planetologist and (most vital) the place of melange in a space- faring society. The relationship between Paul and his mentors: Duncan Idaho (Richard Jordan); Thufir Hawat (Freddie Jones); Gurney Halleck (Patrick Stewart), and Dr. Yueh (Dean Stockwell). The death of Thufir Hawat. The relationship between Paul and the Fremen widow, Harah (Molly Wryn). Scenes with Jessica and The Reverend Mother Mohiam (Sian Phillips) that would have made the Bene Gesserit sisterhood more understandable. That's only a partial list." A small amount of deleted footage was used for the TV version (usually referred to as the "Extended Edition"), but Lynch had nothing to do with that and asked for his name to be removed (he's credited as "Alan Smithee" in the TV version). Thereare also a couple of fanedits using some of the deleted scenes, I think "SpiceDiver" is the most well-known one.

Quite a video. I’m glad you took the time to point out the game’s many many flaws. It’s a game that I appreciate… from a distance. I don’t think you can say it’s a game thah must be played, but it’s interesting to think about how at odds the idea is against making a game. Dune is so large and encompasses so much that any game that tries to tackle ALL of its subject matter is doomed to failure. You seemed to speak a bit disapprovingly of the idea of breaking off a small slice, but with something like Dune I fear that would be the only option when trying to change media format from book to game.
@MrEdders1232 жыл бұрын
I agree it's much easier to actually make a good game by focusing on a small slice, I just wanted to give Cryo credit where due for trying to adapt the story as a whole, which has duels, diplomacy, leading warbands, managing the Fremen tribes, superhuman powers etc. Tough to represent all that in one game, especially with how production costs have changed. Fun fact: there were one or two attempts at making a Dune mod for Mount and Blade, but they're both abandoned. Would be fascinating if someone tried it again for Bannerlord one day!
@ilejovcevski79 Жыл бұрын
Oddly enough, while i remember playing both Dune and Dune 2 quite a bit back in the day (2 more so due to its greater replayability), and despite 2 being in most metrics the better game, i always liked 1 more. Possibly for the same reasons i like Pirates so much. But, in the end, while it may be the inferior game, Dune 1 was the better Dune experience, if that makes any sense.

I don't think it's possible to make a "Dune" game. There's far too much going on in Hebert's book. Luke Skywalker the game doesn't exist, but there are 100s of Star Wars games. Like you suggested, it's probably better to focus on one specific aspect of the Dune universe and gamefy that. I know Stellaris can be modded somewhat, but I for one would love a Landsraad 4x game.
@MrEdders123 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it bothered me that the geopolitical...er, galeopolitical? - situation in the Dune setting, with the balance of power in the Lansraad etc. seems more interesting in the first book than all the subsequent novels.

I assumed it was pronounced "Cry-Oh", the regular English way (it's also pronounced that way on a special track on the Spice Opera CD), but when I watched several French interviews, they all pronounced it "CriYU", so I tried to copy that. McLachlan I always used to call "Mc-LACK-lan" but I watched a couple of interviews and they pronounced it the way from the video. I have no idea how "Balsamique" is pronounced though. On the subject of pronounciation, all the Dune words I pronounced the same way as Frank Herbert (you can find a video on the topic from a Dune channel), but tbh I prefer the Lynch movie's version of Harkonnen and Chani. "Har-KON-nen" sounds much more menacing lol

Pretty sure the word is pronounced "seech"...at least that's how all three movie adaptations pronounce it. Otherwise great video though, have been really enjoying your various retro reviews!
@MrEdders1232 жыл бұрын
It's how Frank Herbert pronounces it in official material. There are quite a few differences between the various adaptations and/or Herbert's version (e.g. Harkonnen, Chani, Tleilaxu)...and in some cases none of them are saying it the "correct" way (original Arabic, for example), though "correct" is obviously up for debate. I went with the Herbert version in most cases because it's easier to find guides using that than jump around in the movies and tv shows trying to find the word again :D
@matthiasbreuer87102 жыл бұрын
@@MrEdders123 Interesting! Thank you for sharing that - I had never watched any interviews with Herbert, but had watched all three adaptations, and the only one I didn't recall for sure was "seech" was the TV miniseries's pronunciation.

@@matthiasbreuer8710 It's actually from an audiobook Herbert narrated himself, or maybe it was some promo thing, I can't quite recall. You can find it on youtube if you're curious. @@MrEdders123 Ah, good to know. I rarely listen to audiobooks (novels, anyway), preferring to read at my pace, but I suppose at least when the book is read by the author themselves, learning how the author expected certain words to be pronounced might be as good an argument as any to do so 🙂

I used to be one of those people that lamented Jodorowsky's Dune not being made because he was known for being one of the artistic underdogs that wasn't beholden to popular fluff and dated tropes. Then I actually watched his sick garbage films, and I'm glad he didn't "rape" this movie. I know how he thinks and the world would be better without creepy mentally ill people with issues and hatreds vomiting their BS on screen for other neurotic people to salivate over. I think my sympathy was better placed in John Boorman who was supposed to give us Lord of the RIngs, which I believe he could have insightfully produced in the spirit to which it was intended. Instead he at least was able to give us Excalibur, but at the same time when we finally did get LOTR it was dumb, long winded fluff for the masses and nothing more. I have nothing against trippy films either if the result is more than just vomiting bitter, relentlessly negative, nonsense onto a screen. I guess it's pearls before swine, and J obviously knew his audience. I have no idea what went wrong with David Lynch. He was insightful and talented enough to pull this film off, so why did he go for sensationalism over substance? It had some strange qualities like in an MTV music video, but there was no depth, no sophisticated imagery, the acting was bad, it went for the gross makeup, and it felt like a mainstream action film of it's time. I don't even think it was incomprehensible and too short. It was if anything too long, boring and straight forward, and the characters had no dimensionality.
@MrEdders12311 ай бұрын
Lynch to this day is extremely sensitive about the topic and consistently refuses to discuss it. IIRC he said he tried to make the movie the studio wanted rather than what he wanted, and that he would never do that ever again. The preface to one of Herbert's last books (Eye, or something) has a section where he talks about Dune and he's actually extremely forgiving of it.
