Probably not recommend one to a new person but I guess it depends on your situation. If you buy an RMI engine you're looking at around $40,000-$70,000. As for someone starting out in the hobby, well, If you want a BIG engine then go for it. But they are a handful and might be a little challenging for someone that doesn't know how to transport or re rail something that big.

There certainly good locomotives, but as mentioned previously they are massive and subsequently hard to move around. I'd suggest looking for a good secondhand 1.5" scale locomotive as almost anything smaller than a pacific can be put in a pickup bed and moved around quite easily.

Yes. It's a 2-6-0 that was built off of a little engines 0-6-0 kit with a larger than normal boiler.

@@Tank245 With a steel boiler and copper fire tubes, is there an anode rod in the boiler to prevent galvanic corrosion?

@@natehill8069 This engine has an all copper boiler with copper tubes. Some engines do have sacrificial plugs, but for the most part boiler treatment such as LSB8000 is used.

@@Tank245 Oh, thats what thats for? I thought it was to reduce scale from minerals in the water. So whats your thoughts on tap vs filtered vs distilled water? Meaningful difference?

@@natehill8069 it does reduce scale, but boiler treatment also is an oxygen scrubber, and removes oxygen from the water to help prevent corrosion. As long as you're using boiler treatment, it doesn't really matter what kind of water you're using. Whether it's good water such as the water we have at my club, or for the very hard water at train mountain, as long as you're using boiler treatment you'll be fine.

It is sad. But I've never had hope the line would reconnect with banks. Too much money to repair a line that would never repay that cost of repair. The silver lining is the washout saved the coastal portion from the same fate and has allowed us to run steam excursions for 20 years.

@@Tank245so how far east can you guys run now until you reach the area where the tracks are pulled up? Is it as far as Foss?

@@matthewgustafson5225 our trackage rights end at the end of the runaround in Enright. The tracks are open all the way to Batterson, albeit trains are not permitted across the Nehalem River bridge in Wheeler, only MOW and speeders, until we secure funding for the repairs to the bridge. Beyond Batterson, there is a small bridge that needs replaced that was majorly damaged in a 2015 storm. Beyond that, the tracks are open to Salmonberry. Then about a mile after Salmonberry is the first major washout that closed the line in 2007.

Go for it! The drawings are original SP. any measurements I couldn't get from the drawings I took off of an SP 2-6-0 on display here in Oregon with the same 100-c tender.

Where did you obtain drawings for the 100-c? I live in Alaska, so visiting one of the Moguls in person will have to wait for a while

Both whistles are functional. I didn't use the bigger whistle under the running board on video because the pipe after the whistle valve is cracked.

I'm just happy people are watching it in general. I mostly just do this for my own entertainment so it's nice to see it getting watched.

Side by side, they're very similar in size, the boilers are almost exactly the same length, but the 2-8-0 has a longer frame. The Mogul was built oversized for what it is. The biggest difference is the mogul is much lighter with it's thinner copper boiler, and the connie is quite a bit heavier with a thicker steel boiler.

@@Tank245 Do you suspect the consolidation to be stronger or about the same?

Given that the Consolidation weighs a good deal more than the mogul, it will have much better tractive effort and be able to pull more. The mogul steams well and has plenty of power, but it lacks in tractive effort.

This engine used to be coal, and I get why people like the nostalgia of coal, but im not a fan. I'll do it occasionally at a friends railroad for fun, But coal is a lot of extra work that's just not for me.

@@Tank245 Sure, its a pain, and in fact until I started hanging around with live steamers I always assumed I would use propane cause its so simple and clean. But I dont like having the propane car between me and the pax. If I could run it on Diesel or kerosene and store the fuel in the tender since its more dense that would be good. But I like the authenticity of coal, particularly the smell. Reminds me of when I was a kid standing on the highway overpass with my grandfather and the trains would go underneath and the steam would cut off on one side and start up again on the other and you would smell the coal.

No it is not a Mogul. It's an Allen 10 wheeler 4-6-0. This engine belonged to the Late John Felt from southern Oregon. He passed away in 2018 and his engine sold. Sadly, I haven't seen it since.
