I’ve always mused that Blunder can’t truly be understood, since he operates on a more conceptual level.

While you are fundamentally correct in your analysis of Nosferatu being mostly too blunt and cliche, i feel compelled to defend the guy who is talented enough to direct “The Lighthouse.” I think the key is to approach the film from the point of view that it is trying to make a political stance that is more overt than his prior works. Under this interpretation, we can see that we are just not the target audience. The core story of the movie can be roughly interpreted as thus: “An abused woman is proclaiming that a great evil is sweeping over the world, and that will doom us unless we do something about it. Yet the people with the power to do something are all calling her crazy.” This is obviously an important message to everyone who appreciates his prior work, but the subtlety of his prior works obscures the core message to the general public. Taking the core themes of his prior works and distilling down into a format suitable for the wider public will almost necessarily result in the exact complaints very rightly levied against the film. It’s for the very same reasons we don’t like the movie that it has the highest general audience score of his works, but this also means the core themes of Egger’s prior work (which have now become very urgent to a lot of people) are getting spread to wider audience. Willem Dafoe is still very annoying in this film though.

I don’t think you “were wrong about his other films” (20:31), I because you are right about those films while at the same time the general public is *very wrong* about those same films is why a movie like nosferatu gets made.

I thought nosferatu was pretty good. The sets and costumes were amazing. The cinematography was competent. And there were some cool sequences, particularly the castle scenes. Dragged a bit in the second act. 7/10 vampire/occult movies will always be cool.
