The only problem I see with this is the amendments aren’t deep enough to stop the sun from oxidizing the nutrients out of them. The swales at Tucson have gathered large quantities of organic material to turn to dirt. But had they had a large amount of manure and grass a twigs biochar etc trucked in and dumped in the swale the would’ve been viable within a year. Your doing it the right way but quantity is king. I built a small swale by hand in craggy wash and brought in straw and brush with sacks of garden soil etc. for the year I was camped there it had degraded into soil. It clouded a couple of times and the swale held up well because the mass of organic material slowed the flow of water. Just advice and take it how you wish. I would get dump truck loads of manure, leaves twigs, etc. if that’s economically feasible. And it might be expensive but it might also save money in the long run. It would definitely capture way more water. Sand damns would also allow you to store tons of water without evaporation. You should check those out.
@ShaneSaxson6 ай бұрын
I built a swale roughly one mile into craggy wash on the left hand side just past the mile marker if you happen to be in lake Havasu City. It’s on the other side of a raised section you can park on. Large quantities of biomass is the best way to go. Also the swales at Tucson Arizona would be a good place to visit. The government commissioned swales built in the depression to put men to work. It took 100 years for them to fill with organic matter to form dirt. Check them out on KZbin if you get a chance. No organic material was added to them.

🎉 cheerleader moment of encouragement 🎉 I totally relate. I fixed a city double lot with only hand tools and time. Our natural sand actually repelled water. If this crazy soil can improve, there is hope for you, too. We now have big fat earthworms and a very happy 4-story tall tree full of baby birds in nests. Our bottle brush bush is home to hummingbird chicks too. I acknowledge how painful the projects you are tackling can feel. You are not alone. The little micro processes, the bugs, the fungi are already to join your team. Hug yourself and keep hope! ❤

Love seeing the process! I'm learning a lot! Here is all the stuff I have learned by watching others throughout the years. I am and will always be learning. I'm also enjoying it, a lot. ------- I don't bag my grass. I mow without the bag and let it be. I dont have to use chemicals to keep it green. I don't rake up the leaves. I mow them back into the lawn and leave them in all the Planter beds. In-laws don't listen to me, so I recently took a contractor bag of leaves and used them to blanket my raised garden beds. I plant cover crops in my garden for the winter, then grind them up in my chipper shredder, a recent buy for the garden, and then put it all in the garden. All plant and tree clipping can now be shredded and used in my beds now. I drink coffee. I dry the grounds and put them in a jar. Then, shredd the unbleached filters in a paper shredder. I drink tea. I dry the bags. Then, put the grounds in the jar with the coffee grounds. Then, shredd the unbleached filters in a paper shredder. Eggs. I dry the shells, uncleaned, then smash them and use a mortar and pestle to grind them up. Then, I put them in the jar with the coffee and tea grounds. Once the jar is full, I sprinkle it into various potted plants or in the garden. All of my fruit and vegetable leftovers and cuts go into my compost beds. I shred up clean papers and clean cardboard in my paper shredder. Then, when that is full, I put it out in the compost bed and let the bugs and worms do their work.

Hey, when you are making the dirt dam you have to get the dirt from the bed of the creek not the sides. I learn this while doing them. If you dig on the side where the water will be, it will help create a better floor so that the water doesn’t just soak into the ground. Also it help dam not be shallow and the water living trough the bottom of the dam.

Please don't be offended; but all these actions you are taking depends on water. I would start this process closer to the bottom of the gully at the high water mark or a bit higher. I notice when I was starting out the platue would wash out if I didnt have enough of a ditch at the back. Flat or no berm on the downward slope will result in a wash out too. Start small and work your way larger. Remember it is all about retaining water and this includes not letting any leave your sit or area you are working one. That is #1 Next is shade. Larger trees (like mimosa) to stop wind and evaporation. The water must percolate and fill up those empty reservoirs underground. All the best brother
@b4k4survivor6 ай бұрын
Good advice. Small, simple earthen structures like one rock check dams, rock run downs, and media lunas at the high water points of those washes, working his way down, would yield the most fruit for the labor/time/money, imo. I also noticed that the land and washes over by his Yurt seem to be higher elevation, so I'm not sure why he isn't focusing his work over there since generally it's best to start as high up on your watershed as you can, and it's right be some of his infrastructure.
