The problem is with these doors Lynn is their hinges don't have a great reputation and frequently fail. I would have used a wheel carrier from a Land Rover and bolted it direct to the panal with a spread plate but so commonly reported that these hinge aren't strong enough and have problems supporting the door never mind 20kg+ of wheel. The Wheeliams carrier takes the weight off the door and even makes it a more rigid structure. Still bloody expensive though. I've just bought the equally expensive ladder and will be adapting it slightly so will give another build and review soon.

Thank you so much for watching and your kind comments. The angle alloy I found in ebay and I was fortunate to have pre-existing holes in the frame of the van with enough access to pen mark the alloy when I aligned in place. This allowed me to drill the alloy and bolt direct to the frame with a rubber break in between. However, enough rivnuts would still support quite well. Best wishes, Paul

Its been 3 years now and 2 winters building and using this van in various states of completion and we still do not have condensation issues having engineered excellent airflow and picking materials that compliment. Nikki, I plan to use a stick on vinyl/ fablon type for front of fridge…. Nice little curtain…I was planning just to leave the overhead storage just open, as is, but food for thought. By a sink tidy, I assume for scourer, w/up liquid etc? I’m getting over the confusion of the different types of fasteners for extrusion, the hard bit for me is “slide in” and “sliding”…two totally different components with a confusingly similar sounding name ( if u have been watching you tube “ how to videos” . Anyhow, I bought some off Amazon, just hope things will be a little easier when I get back on the case of roof rack.

Hi Richard, stick on fablon-great idea. The little macrame curtain does look sweet. When your in bed the overhead compartment was glaring at me and looking a mess😂. The "sink tidy" was a tiny space which we thought was to convenient not too use. It's use is still pending.... Maybe storage for dishwashing equipment or maybe just storage for toothbrush/toothpaste. Thanks for watching it means alot to both of us, Best wishes Nicky.

Thank you so much for watching and thank you for your kind comments. We're hoping our "ducks line up" and we can retire early but not likely to happen in the near future. The build is a little different to the std approach and is performing well and suiting our Vanlifestyle as intended. We're considering another build as we believe there is another way to the "norm". Working to a budget we'd be building from roof down, using very little sound deadening, zero vapour barrier, only walling what you see and flooring where you walk....... What do you think? Thoughts and ideas would be appreciated. Best wishes, Paul and Nicky.

@@vanlifemyway7806 I did see a previous post, may have been FB where you mentioned about another build with Nicky leading the way. Sounds interesting and intriguing as there are I'm sure a lot of us that use our van as campers, day trippers and not full time living accommodation ( which the internet is full of at the present). Never used a vapour barrier on our build as I think it would be impossible to create in a van myself and I believe it much more beneficial to let the van breathe so to speak I maybe wrong 🤷🏻 look forward to seeing what you both come up with.......p.s I do hope all our ducks line up too 🤞🏻

One thing surprises me with working with extruded aluminium is that the T-nuts can rotate 90 deg….and you don’t have to preload, as you can drop them in…..and I’m not talking about the Roll in T-nuts, just the standard ones. Maybe that’s just the KLN stuff, I don’t know, but it goes against what others have said about having to preload the T-nuts.
@vanlifemyway7806
@vanlifemyway7806 2 ай бұрын
Hey Richard, the fixings are handy, especially the sprung loaded roll in nuts. The ones that twist into place can be a bit annoying to slide within the channel as more often than not they just untwist and fall out. The spring loaded has been my preferred fixing and ideal for the interior build, however, the nuts you have to pre- load are much "beefyer" and probably better for high load areas like the roof rack.
@richardsracingmad
@richardsracingmad 2 ай бұрын
@@vanlifemyway7806 I am going to use the t-nuts and some 5 hole corner plates I have made to assemble the roof rack frame. (I was hoping the t-nuts were better than I was lead to believe on watching Humble Road videos, but the t-nuts are not as good as I had hoped). However, I am pretty confident this fastening will be up to the job strength-wise, just very fiddly fixings in practice. And not what I had imagined……which means it is better to assemble the roof rack on the ground, not on the roof, doh! My design is to fix the 5hole corner brackets and t-nuts underneath, which double as (some of) the mounts for the solar panels. Downside is it now needs to be assembled prior to attaching to the van roof, ….We have plenty of fork lifts and tractors around! Not ideal, but this is what I have to work with……. My solar panels are about the widest I can fit, that sit flush within the side profile of the van (147cm solar panels) Then I plan to attach to roof rack assembly to the roof with the t-bolts you mention. It started off as a simple project..🧐🤣 I will throw up a couple of photos on your media page

Where there's a will Richard! There can be a bit of adapting here and there. I rarely build to a plan more so adapt as I go along. There's often factors that we overlook and I find the figuring out process a challenge and add that to years of figuring stuff out we can then call experience. Looking forward to seeing some pictures.

@vanlifemyway7806

Thanks for watching and thanks for reaching out to us. This is not the most documented problem, rather the scuttle panel leaking causing water to flood the engine and specifically corroded the injectors making them ni impossible to remove. The manufacturer remidied most of these problems with the face-lift from 2013-14. My problem doesn't seem documented which I hope is, therefore, an isolated problem. However, if I have had this problem I expect others may have too. If so it would affect the whole product range. Who knows, perhaps mine was a 4.45pm Friday model and Jean Pierre had overdone the Carte de Jour? Best wishes, Paul

Hi Rafal, thank you for watching and thank you so much for your kind comments. We've yet to have the final weigh in and I'm hopeful we'll be well underweight. The extruded alloy is no lighter than equivalent wood but it has allowed us to use differing building methods which have omitted many materials. That been said, the additional water tank and the "Mistral" work surface we wanted may not help. Won't be long now as we're very nearing completion. Best wishes, Paul

When estimating the cost, do not forget to include all the hardware needed (bolts, t-nuts, plates, brackets). They cost as much as the bars. Also, it's not as easy to get the missing parts because you usually have to order / wait for them. It's not a quick visit to the local hardware store as wood construction would be. But, even knowing all that, I do not regret my choice.

😂 Been well overdue this one as I pretty much didn't know how to approach it! I love this stuff and what it's allowed us to achieve but can't "Diss" any other approach to a build. KJN offered a great service and was very consistent with good quality products. Something I should have mentioned is that a great justification for us for the expense was we did the whole build for the price of the roof rack we could have ordered... and ended up with a better rack. Hoping to retire from our other lives to quite some time travelling in this van so it had to be right and future proof. Keep in touch and let us know how things are going. Best wishes, Paul and Nic

I’ve been waiting for this vid guys…. I’m going your route with extrusion for framing. I have already done the sliding bed, ( out of “other material”) and as I don’t need as much going on in the garage ( open area, with perhaps framing to one side for electrics), I am looking to build two large side cabinet frames and a seating area basically. So 3 modular frames, so to speak….oh and a roof rack similar to yours, out of extrusion. I did do a rough guess of cost of wood vs extrusion, but of course no fixings for either were included in my calculations, as that would get a bit difficult and complex. I’m thinking ( read : guessing ) extrusion is about 8x the cost of using wood, again a very rough guesstimate🙃. I like the inherent strength, longevity and flexibility of extrusion, with no worry of rot, swelling etc. So I think if I can do my extrusion roof rack and interior frames for about £2500-£3000, with fixings, I would be happy. I have budgeted for that. I’m not convinced extrusion is lighter than wood frame…however the thing I like is it will last. Don’t think I will have as much aluminium on faces….i may have doors covering the faces. So, I am not doing it for aesthetics. However I’m going for a Tetravan shower ( about £1600), so that’s my real extravagance. Madness😁

I know you've been waiting Richard. This vlog took a lot of thinking, planning and executing so sorry for the wait. Talking about weight, comparing size, the alloy is heavier than wood but I dare say you can use a hell of a lot less. With hindsight, 30x30 section would have been plenty strong enough for all my units. I think you will be within budget. The fixings you'll find are the greatest expense however, I did happen upon some Chinese internal conceiled fixings at a fraction of the cost which I've used on a few "lighter duty" areas, which appear to be working well. Don't skimp on the angle brackets though, the real things are a much more secure fit. Send us some pictures as you go. Paul

Now we're trimming Nicky is coming up with some cracking ideas. She's even mentioned that she wants to build another van herself. I think that'll be a great idea.

Hi and thank you for watching. I did mention that in the video. There is rubber pads where all alloy touches steelwork and the few bolts used probably have a surface area of perhaps less than 6" square. I have windows in the van so does kind of blend into insignificance considering the total area of window space .. excluding the bridging mechanicals in several doors. It would be difficult to notice any additional effect considering and is way outweighed by the benefits in this build.
