The opening scene of the Torrance family traveling up the mountain pass has a surreal visual aspect, like it's seen from a bird's eye, soaring over the majestic scenery. The use of Dies irae during this segment is brilliant. And yes, the scene when Danny turns the corner and sees the twins has a chilling musical accompaniment I've always appreciated. The entire film is charmed. It's like a Bosch painting. There's always something new and horrifying with each viewing, and the score just makes it even more satisfying.

Amazing work just truly beautiful explanations and perspective. Question: IS the music when danny turns the corner to see the two sisters on the same record as music for strings?

As a Norse pagan this is truly meaningful beyond understanding. You touch on such beautiful yet dark aspects of our cyclical reality. A “Haunting Beauty” sums up this piece of art very well I think. Hail the gods for your beautiful work. A true artist with a fine and inspiring touch of creation

Thank you so much for an engrossing piece of work on a film I’ve watched many times since I first saw it on its release. I remember the first time it felt as if a huge weight was on my chest making breathing difficult. That in no small part was the effect of the incredible musical score. What a contribution from Gordon Stainforth. Brilliant.

4 years since upload and I've watched this probably a dozen times and shown it to half a dozen people. Still makes me tear up.... the passion for indescribably beautiful and yet largely unnoticed detail, the recognition of the unsung heroes, the dreams of Jiro being brought into reality reflecting the realized dreams of the filmmakers..... it gets me every time. Every time. Even to this day. This is my comfort essay. Thank you so much for this.

It helps to put this all into perspective to realize that a forged sword was a most expensive possession. The average Viking warrior had only an axe, a knife, and a shield. A sword, to put it into today’s terms, would cost as much as sedan.

Space lion is of such superb quality, that it would feel out of place in any other show, but not here. The composition is fantastic, the interpretation is masterful and emotional. It was the perfect ending piece. See you, space cowboy.

The first half of this thus far has been rather well done and interesting. What brought me to this thread was my curiosity as to whether this thread unlike numerous other "Shining" threads dealt with and delved into the concept of isolation and the lingering exasperating effects of long-term stints in isolation which is the true horror that the film and the book are addressing. Being kept in isolation for long periods of time is seen as a form of torture.

At 11:46 it's interest that the "scare chord" (the drum strike here) comes not when the audience sees the twins but when DANNY would have first seen them. The scare didn't happen the the audience, it happend to HIM.

This is the best kind of video essay, when the creator injects actual creative ideas into the video like the lingering eyes in the dark, or literally using Mickey-mousing throughout as he talks about it.
