Alpaca Male You referenced one piece of an extremely well put together video. Don't pretend like you could just as easily pull off his Rorschach style image fades, his panel stenciling, his color transition during the primary vs. secondary description, and I could go on and on about the technical details put into this video, but the truth is, it comes down to the amount of passion and research he puts into the topics. I actually learned something. And he did it in a fun and interesting way. That takes talent and it's obvious that his style of editing shows it.

"An adaptation should never replace the source material." That's why I have mixed feelings on the Frankenstein films. They were important to the development of cinema, but they have totally replaced the image of the original novel in the public's eye. People think of the monster as Boris Karloff, not the intelligent but murderous character of the source material.

So, it sounds like the monster in "Penny Dreadful" was very close to the literary character.

The same could be said of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Almost all adaptations have Jekyll as a scientist who accidentally cursed himself to becoming a big, horrible monster. In the book, Jekyll deliberately enjoyed transforming himself into Mr. Hyde, who was an intelligent, short but remorseless man. Jekyll liked becoming Hyde because it freed him of moral and social burdens, and his addiction eventually consumed him. As a result of modern adaptations, most people think of what was supposed to be a cautionary tale about human behavior into a less interesting version of the Incredible Hulk.
@babywolf4238
@babywolf4238 7 жыл бұрын
I disagree with that statement. You should always strive to make the best text possible, even if it means replacing the source. If this had resulted in the film being better than the graphic novel, then we would have gotten a great film.
@juantsu2000

farmzombie I don't completely agree. If you are going to adapt something into a movie and adapt it EXACTLY like the source material, then what's the point in making it? However, you can't change the source material to the point where the spirit of the story is gone. Basically, when making an adaptation you have the job of making something original and necessary (so that it doesn't feel like milking the og story) but at the same time knowing which elements of the source material don't need changing so that the essence of the story is still there.

Great video bubson. I read Watchmen in high school after seeing the trailer for the movie and I thought it was amazing (the book). So I gotta give credit to the movie for getting me interested, even though it was a pretty much a complete shitshow, spare some really well done scenes - like the intro fight with the comedian and Dr. Manhattan's transformation.

It was actually Fearful Symmetry, but I'm glad you pointed out this chapter. It's right in the middle of the graphic novel, and if you look at it closely, the entire chapter is completely symmetrical, from the panel layout to the motion of the characters action and even the colors. It's the most brilliant and overlooked thing ever done in comics. If you have the comic, I'd recommend going back and finding the exact middle of the book, then turning each page forward and backward to the beginning and end of the chapter (all about symmetry), and just be blown away by the genius of it.

I love the movie, and I love the book. Both to death. But I never expect or want a comicbook movie to be a DIRECT adaptation. I appreciate the changes Zack made, and I visit both of these works of art on a regular basis. I cant say which I think is better because they are two different mediums, but I certainly dont think the movie is a step down from the book, and definitely dont think Zack missed the point of it at all. The movie and the book are both polarizing, even while being cult classics. Its a story simply not for everyone, but I love that its one for me.

@@jthodges4741 Yeah not really, point is it was a great adaptation into a different medium. You can't adapt symmetrical panel spreads to a screen that only shows one "panel". It was also by design the movie had lots of action and gore throughout and a rather bloodless climax (energy explosion), which was commentary on the action movie genre in general and audiences desires, not just comic movies. Comic movies weren't quite as prominent back then compared to now.

Thing is, I never really understood why people called Watchmen "unadaptable", I thought it was pretty straightforward. Of course, that would mean they'd have to cut out a lot of elements, but I thought it could be done and Zach Snyder proved it. But then after watching this video, this guy has really opened up my eyes. It now DOES make sense why they chose the 9 panel comic layout, and why the colours were chosen, and many other things. Great video.

Snyders Adaptation of Watchmen is a "superhero movie" about Superhero movies. it shows this extreme violence that was becoming popular and mainstream at the time and it asks us "do we really like this" we see him "parody" and give those inside jokes to show how we look at cape films. snyder uses the same concept moore did with the "graphic novel and how its laid out" idea and adapts that to the film.

I read the graphic novel just before it came out and the movie blew me away.

***** And that was a stupider idea than the one from the movie. Uniting the world against a known threat is easier and makes more sense, than inventing a new fake one that no one has ever seen before. The movie just did this particular bit better than the comic. Its not a personal attack against anyone, it just fits the world better.

I think that comic as an art is underrated . Comic must be greater than a film if is well done because is more intimate experience. You can watch a film with your friend. But when you are watching and reading a comic book, you are alone and you are more catapulted in the world of images 'cause you have all the time to read and think and see the details. In a film you do not have that "space" in which you can think about and the entire scene could be lost, passing fast away. In every comic you make the time , the reader is in some way a part of the "direction". But in the fast internet era everything is lost in a blink of an eye. No time to think about it, that's what is the real "mainstream": fashion without thinking. That's why I love comics.

Great video! I agree with almost everything, 2 issues I have. 1) there is blood and gore in huge detail hanging off the ceiling in the comic when Dr. Manhattan vaporizes then men in the restaurant so I'm not sure Snyder's violence was overdone in respect to the comic. 2) the suit Ozy wears in the film is in fact a parody of Batman's suit, you're right on that but costumes in the comic were often meant as parodies of comic book costumes. So isn't the films version a parody of comic book film costumes perfect for a film adaptation? I think al lot of the violence and costumes are meant as film version parodies the way the comic was a parody of comics. What do you think?

Snyder's Watchman is just okay, it doesn't have the subtlety and grandeur of the Graphic Novel, but no true adaption should shoot it word for word and scene for scene. The whole point of adaption is the adapt to a new medium and in this case it's film. Though I do admit I did like the whole Nite Owl beating the shit out of Ozymandias scene since that's what I wanted to happen after Rorsach died in the comics... the asshole who caused it to happen to get a smackdown. Though it's better in the comics with just Ozy asking Dr Manhattan if he did the right thing and the good doctor telling him nothing ends.

How do you propose to put all those issues in one movie? I found watchmen very good and a fresh take on film making.(never read watchmen) I read the first few pages of watchmen and I like how detailed the first night owl was with his life, but you can't, you just can't put that in a 2 hour / 3 hour movie. He took the concept and put it in there and I loved it. Loved how the criminal was so close to them and how theatrical it all seemed.

I remember seeing the trailer for watchmen in theaters. I clearly remember the trailer stating "the most celebrated graphic novel of all time" and my friends and I laughed, saying "how can it be the most celebrated if none of us have ever even heard of it!?" We were around 18 at the time. I went to see the movie in theaters and absolutely loved it. I read the comic in a single sitting a few days later. If it wasn't for the movie, I would have never known about Watchmen. I clearly appreciate it as a masterpiece now. Mind you, I wasn't a huge comic book nerd or anything but I'm half japanese and have been reading manga all my life and have been to my fair share of comic book shops. edit: forgot to make my point, the film may be flawed from those that loved the comic from before. but it absolutely did a terrific job of reintroducing the watchmen to a new more desensitized generation and getting people like me to seek it out. Spoilers: This is an unpopular opinion but I prefer the ending of the movie over the comic. It made more sense to me, and I thought the story flowed a lot better that ozymandias would use doctor manhattan's tech and energy to destroy NY (and other major cities) rather than introduce extradimensional beings at the very end of the comic (only in NY if I remember correctly). It really threw me off when I saw that squid monster at the end of the comic. It felt like it came out of no where rather than seeing John constantly working on the machine that was used in the climax of the movie. It also made more sense to me that doctor manhattan could no longer stay on earth because of what adrian did in the film rather than just not wanting to be on earth anymore. Still love the comic as a separate thing from the movie though. Just my two cents as a person that was introduced via the movie rather than the graphic novel.

First I want to say that I watched the movie first... and it is really good. I read the comic later... and it is significantly better. Secondly I completely disagree with "an adaptation should only be seen as supplementary." I think an adaptation should stand on it's own and needs to make changes to adapt to a new medium or to add new or different ideas. Look at Disney adaptations.

@@mphylo2296 I think you might missed the point. As visually similar as the book and film are, watchmen the movie tries to do the same thing for movies that watchmen did for comics (specifically action/superhero movies of the time). People at the time were fans of the glorified violence and big explosions? It made the violance overbearing and the explosion dismal and punished a standard viewer for wanting those things. This can be seen in many things, from the visuals, costume design, and some of the dialogue that was changed. Those things were done in order to translate the thesis of the book into the medium of film. Also, how did you see that the movie painted any heroes besides the minutemen and dr. manhattan, which the book also portrayed as roles models and gods, as gods among men? I watched the film and saw that these were very, very damaged people

I love this video to death, I really do, but I have an issue with it, at 3:14 you say: "It took the realism that Marvel introduced with characters like Spider-man and made it ACTUALLY REAL, not just money troubles..." almost dismissing the spiderman stories as a lame attempt at realism, but it your spiderman video you say: "It was spiderman's realism, relatability and psychological complexity that helped redefine what was expected from comics at that era" and also in that video you say: "spiderman is one of the few books that's able to tackle serious subject matter like death, corruption or insecurity without resorting to being edgy or dark, it just feels REAL" So what is it then? :/ In one video you say spiderman doesn't feel actually real, and in another you say it does... so do you change your views and choose to consider a story as complex, or as simple depending on the point you're trying to make? So when talking about Watchmen Spider-man is lame and unrealistic because it's not dark, and when talking about spiderman stories like Watchmen are lame because they gotta resort to being dark? I don't mean to be rude or anything, it's just that it kinda bothered me the inconsistency of how in one video you're praising spiderman and on another you're kinda saying it's not good enough.

I think Snyder's biggest misstep with his adaptation of Watchmen (to all his adaptations really) , is that he's far too concerned with recreating classic visuals from the source material as opposed to understanding the subtext and meaning behind those visuals. His adaptations are decent replicas but they're ultimately hollow once you look for a deeper meaning.

I still say the whole "It would take thirty minutes to explain the squid" thing is garbage. Here, I'll do it in a very quick line of dialogue. Oz: Did you know my pet is a genetic hybrid? My company put a lot of stock into making that a reality. So when I stupid Manhattan's powers to fix the energy crisis, I made sure to fold that into my other work. A little reconfiguring and I managed to cross several undersea species into one giant new creature, alongside giving it the ability to teleport. Of course, the strain of the teleportation will kill it, but the psychic backlash of its death cry will essentially kill millions of people in close proximity. Unfortunate, but neccessary. There, done. You tie it back to Manhattan, so that foreshadowing from before isn't wasted and you bring the tiger thing we all saw and bam! You have the squid and the stupidity of America and Russia thinking they can survive against Dr. Manhattan is done away with. Because we can probably fight aliens, but Dr Manhattan? The fuck are they gonna do?

I tried explaining to my friends the other day, why the Watchmen movie failed as an adaptation. You pretty much covered everything I couldn't put into words. I've always thought the key to Watchmen's success as a movie would be incorporating the tricks and tropes of cinema the same way Watchmen the graphic novel embraces comic conventions. I do have one minor critique: At 3:16 when you compare Watchmen's "realism" to Marvel's "realism". I'm guessing it was unintentional but you seem to equate realism with a gritter raising of the stakes, when in reality (excuse the pun), the stakes in Watchmen aren't any more real, they're just more bleak. Realism encompasses triumphs and tragedies of varying degrees. Pushing forth the idea that realism requires higher stakes is the reason comics suffered through the "darker and edgier" 90's anti-hero slump. Minor criticism aside, this was a fantastic video.

LOL! Not going to lie, there's a moment in this video that seems _really_ pretentious to me, when you offer up the "auteur" explanation for Moore not using established DC characters by saying he wanted them "to be damaged" and to leave the baggage of continuity behind, when in reality it was said to be as much - if not more - attributable to DC comics refusing to let Alan Moore kill off and (sometimes literally) violate characters they had just acquired for the purposes of a one off storyline. Not everything has some deep artistic explanation. Reminds me of the disconnect between Moore and his fans on Killing Joke. Fans call it a "masterpiece" and "the best comic ever written," the "greatest Batman story ever told" and so on, what does Alan Moore think? "I've never really liked my story in The Killing Joke." There's that old Freud joke "sometimes a cigar, is just a cigar" sometimes Alan Moore says "I'd like to have Peacemaker try to rape Nightshade" and DC comics just says, "fuck you Alan. We *just* bought this shit alright?... Jesus!"

I don't think Ozy's costume choice was simply just an "inside joke". Watchmen itself takes a lot of comic book tropes and parodies them in really dark or unusual ways. To have a mass murderer dressed like a character from one of the most G rated superhero movies is kind of fucked up and interesting.
@Paragon-su8jt
@Paragon-su8jt 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah but why? The characters in the movie don't know he's dressed like a kids movie. No impact there. Ozy's obsession with Egyptian pharaohs was a big part of his character in the comic. It informed where his character was coming from, gave him a leadership role, "the smartest man in the world", and it was a real twist when you find out he is the villain in the comic. All of that is lost in the movie. From the first or second scene, one could easily guess he's the villain, because he acts like one and the cinematography acts like it. How Nite Owl was able to guess his password on his PC in the movie was Ramses makes no sense. The audience and characters don't really know about that at all. In the comic, Ozy's company makes toys and merch of his superhero persona. That's how you satirize the superhero genre and juxtapose something for kids with something dark, not "heh he looks like that one silly Batman movie".
