Very good. Keep up the explanations of gut details in Darktable. But please kill the annoying mucisian in the background. Whats the idea of mudding up your interesting words with a looping piece of nonsense-sound?

It would have been nice if you learned how to use it before you make a video. I have the LX3 and its way better than you say.

I'm not sure what feature I missed or didn't cover. I just said I don't think it's a good fit for an average non-photo-geek person these days vs a smartphone. Certainly not if you pay some inflated eBay price on these. Have it already kicking around in your drawer? Then sure, it's a fine camera. Paying $150-$200 used for it at the end of 2024? Ehh ... not so much. Even compared to newer yet still old things in Panasonic's own line up with the GF1-GF3 I find it hard to justify. I just find myself reaching for other tools like my X100s. Plus, knowing there are better options on the used market going for similar prices or less make it a hard sell. The GF3 is marginally larger than this, still pretty darn small and can be had on eBay (with the kit lens) for what these sell for more or less. It's also way to small for my hands to really use comfortably but that's a personal thing.

It is a nice compact camera really, just as a leica d-lux 4. Full manual controls, sharp lens and RAW. And now with the AI software for noise or enhace etc they are almost better then before. But yes, it is not for everyone, just as all cameras now, because smartphones are so easy, effortless and accurate for normal people 😂
@LeanderHuttonPhotoАй бұрын
The sensor’s dynamic range is probably the biggest short coming compared to modern smartphones. Noise can be handled in post like you say but blown away highlights kind of are what they are. Smartphone image quality has come a long way due to their internal pricing.

Why is it when I use filmic instead of sigmoid I need to add in way more saturation to get my colors back?

The way the interface on filmic works makes it easier to recover and control for highlights than sigmoid

No offense, but every feature in this program is as far away from what we call user experience, convenience, and intuitive operation as the Earth is to Pluto. Hardly any app has been seen that attaches so much importance to never being used voluntarily by a larger number of users and to remain in the small circle of sworn nerds. But it's partly funny to watch because it's so weird.
@LeanderHuttonPhoto4 ай бұрын
I didn’t write the software and there’s none taken. I think it definitely requires one to know their craft beyond what most other RAW developers do. It’s more akin to something like Davinci Resolve (maybe Capture One, but even it’s not that close) than Lightroom. Video editors and colorists seem more comfortable with Darktable than photographers in my experience. Conversely, the control it gives you is far greater than Lightroom’s. But I see what you’re saying. 90% of the photography market is about speed and presets. Coming from the other direction I think it’s sad that few photographers have interest in the backbone of the editing and just want to one click and done. Editing and developing in the film world is at least 50% of the craft. The implementation isn’t perfect and I do find bugs somewhat often, but the more technical intent is a nice change from the “use this black box and just accept what it does” that the rest of the photo editing world takes.

@@LeanderHuttonPhoto Makes sense given the fact that photographers are some of the most computer illiterate folks around these days. You see evidence of this fact seeing as how most of them who seek aid for issues they have, are incapable of asking coherent questions and certainly incapable of understanding basics like posting their device specifications and software configuration of any king. Totally unaware the questions they're asking answers to are beyond the scope of normal users and even some engineers. Most of them aren't concerned with things like color in reality either. None of them have the faintest of clues of what a color managed workflow even looks like, and are then sometimes baffled why their prints look nothing like what they saw on their uncalibrated TN-panel screens (for the 10% of them that printed any of their digital images ever). The majority in basically everything have accepted convenience-over-all-else. But I guess when your clientele will accept whatever - it somewhat makes sense.

I think most any technical field is like that. There is vocabulary to learn that makes some more sense later. That being said "sigmoid" is named after a mathematical curve so it's probably not something many photographers have run into. "Filmic with less buttons" takes up too much room in the UI though. :)

Hello. Asking do you know of a way to unify skin tones in darktable??
@LeanderHuttonPhoto5 ай бұрын
I have never heard of that before. But I do not get heavy handed with corrections. I suspect a tool like RGB Curves could be used along with a parametric or drawn mask to accomplish adjusting skin tones like that. I usually just color correct with a ColorChecker and then go into color grading.
@Eigil_Skovgaard5 ай бұрын
In the Retouch module, the section 'Wavelets decompose' may be useful. I forget the functionality when I have been away from it for a while. You'll have to study the manual. Boris Hejducovik has a very good demonstration in his video Darktable Episode 59, starting at 20:00, about how to manage skin tones.

Question: Is there a button to toggle between the original and edited views of a photo in darkroom? I believe there's an option to see your refined vs. original version in Photoshop's Camera Raw, but I'm curious if darktable has an equivalent. As I can tell from your video, you go back and forth via the history tab. Is this the only way, or is there a keyboard shortcut? Thanks so much and nice edits! :)
@LeanderHuttonPhoto5 жыл бұрын
Not that I'm aware and that might due to the fact that the "original" settings can be rather customized in Darktable. For example I have it apply a per camera base curve and change the demosiac algorithm from default for Bayer pattern cameras. The quickest way to do that would be to make a snapshot before your edits that you can jump back to I think.
@philsmith7745 жыл бұрын
Caleb - look at the snapshot function. Not quite a one button press but you can move a slider over the image to get a before and after.

The resync replaces the xmp file on the remote location with the one from your local drive. So if you edited the file on the remote location (say from another machine) after doing the create local copy operation that would be overwritten I would think.
