Esther Ofarim (Abi, not quite as much) has been a love of mine since first seeing and hearing her on German TV starting in 1965 (we simply didn't have a TV set before that). I have always loved her voice and still think she is one of the greatest pop and folk singers of the last fifty years. One of the major achievements that she (and Abi), as Israelis, managed was becoming successful in the country that orchestrated the Holocaust - not that anybody called it by that name before the U.S. TV miniseries came around. And less than twenty years before the war and the Holocaust were over. But those two obviously were aware what the country they were becoming successful in had perpetrated in regards of their people befoe. And while I was less than ten years old then and had absolutely no opinion on general world politics, looking back I am deeply grateful for Esther & Abi for providing a lot of musical enjoyment to the citizens of the country that once tried to eradicate their people. And I find it completely mandatory that we (Germany) position ourselves in favour of Israel in the present conflict with Hamas, by the way. But other than that I don't want to get into politics, but just thank Esther (Abi's no longer around) for her contribution to post-war reconciliation. And of course a whole bunch of wonderful music.
