When people say it overloads the eccentric portion of the lift I’m thinking, how? It only gives back what you put in. I’m almost certainly going to buy one but I’m just trying to work out how Im going to justify it to her in doors!
@GrayMatterLifting2 күн бұрын
The "overloaded eccentric" is more of a... it actively PULLS on the eccentric. Where a bar or cable or dumbbells has gravity pulling the weight back down, the flywheel is PULLING almost like someone is playing tug of war on the other end.

I have been using my kBox for about 6 months, here is my experimence: 1. The main advantage for this machine over typical weights is that it's easier to quatify "explosiveness" (a.k.a measure your lifts in watts not kg), and therefore progressively overload it. 2. It's still primarily a lower body training device since the resistance comes from the bottom. For upper body it's not as easy to setup. 3. The machine can provide really high resistance, similar to barbells. So it's a plus for people who don't have space for a rack yet still want to train hard on bi-lateral lower body exercises. 4. If used frequently, the belt needs to be trimmed down every 1-2 month and eventually get replaced. So there is some maintainance cost. 5. Talking about progressive overload, the kBox it self is great, but the app is lacking. It takes too much phone screen clicking to properly track a set of exercise. It's better if they have screen/buttons mounted on the kBox for instant and convenient tracking. 6. It's a pain to change plates during exercise. I typically just leave on one plate and vary my target power output (e.g. bicep curl try to hit 100watt for 10 reps, squat try to hit 500watt for 8 reps). 7. The "eccentric overload" thing is not as easy to do since the eccentric phase absorbs the exact same kinetic energy the concentric phase put in, so there is no "overload" during typical movement patterns. You have to intentionally shorten the exertion time during the eccentric phase in order to overload the force production, but this is hard to quantify and therefore hard to progressively overload. In conclusion, kBox plus adjustble dumbbels makes a great combo for full body workout in a small footprint, plus you get the benefit of precise explosiveness training.

Thank you for not recommending crazy expensive bars. I feel like everyone thinks they need the best bar in the market, but in reality, most people just need a decent bar that will perform any lift you want and you can get that within the $150-$250 range especially if you wait for sales
@GrayMatterLifting11 күн бұрын
@@jmsantiago1 I looked yesterday and found a Rogue Ohio Bar in their boneyard for $200. That bar will do more than almost anyone needs. And I think year round you can get a good bar from XMark, Bells of Steel, and Living Fit for under $200. As we get into a hobby we can get a little focused, that $600 bar has extra special qualities. Which is totally cool. But unnecessary to start off with, or maybe even ever.
@Two_Names12 күн бұрын
Hi, beginner lifter and a proud home gym owner of just under a year now. I started out with some adjustable dumbbells, a storage bench for them, and a doorframe pullup bar and now I've expanded into my garage with a smith machine half rack. I fit everything in about a 6' x 9' space. I'm a couple creature-comforts away from being able to abandon the commercial gym altogether. If I were to give any advice at all to people who have committed to building a home gym, it would be to carve out a dedicated space FIRST. The consistency of workouts with a home gym only happens if you have a space suitable for exercising. It doesn't have to be a permanent space (mine wasn't at first), but it does need to be a space you can use regularly and WANT to use regularly. In the middle 2/3 of the year, I resorted to commercial gym workouts instead of home gym workouts because moving my home gym stuff into my bedroom made it functionally unusable when I had time available to work out. Measure your space, use tape outs and digital or physical mock-ups, and do mock workouts to make sure the space is usable.
@GrayMatterLifting11 күн бұрын
@@Two_Names this is a good one. If it takes you 30 minutes to set up your gym, you are going to find excuses again why you skipped a workout. Hard to do that when you just roll out of bed and can start lifting.
@verablack313712 күн бұрын
I have a question: I have an absolutely tiny space, I sleep on a Japanese style futon/tatami mat which once I wake up I fold it up and put it away, so basically I have a bit more than a bed sized area where I can work out, I have been just using a 48" Barbell, dumbbells and an adjustable bench. Would it be reasonable to buy a Titan Yoke, use it like a rack with a rackable 6ft barbell, and just take the crossmember out and put it away against the wall when not in use? I do have a strap hooked to a stringer on my mall to secure my bench standing up against the wall, so that is the plan, is there some reason this wouldn't work?
@GrayMatterLifting12 күн бұрын
Downside with a Yoke typically, when we are talking about your space, is going to be how large the actual "feet" are. The other issue would potentially be the 6ft barbell. Is it "rackable"? If it is, then I don't see any issues in your idea. You could potentially decide to grab squat stands and get a similar solution (maybe a crossmember with MagPins would hold it togethe?). You mention a stringer, could go a fold away rack. Just a few more potential ideas, otherwise I think a Yoke would be fine.

Reasons to purchase for a bb hypertrophy stand point: 1. You can progress more consistently since you can microload pound by pound 2. You can add more tension in the stretched position via inverse band setting/eccentric load 3. You can track velocity to measure proximity to failure/reps in reserve 4. Automated progress tracking
@GrayMatterLifting21 күн бұрын
@@12PieceAndaSoda number 1 for sure. With smaller exercises like lateral raises, it is a big win. Number 2 isn't exactly perfect. The inverse band setting only works on its own, it isn't part of the weight training feature (unless a recent update changed that). If we get custom strength curves that would definitely be the case. But right now bands and chains aren't perfect and the eccentric overload is good but not 100% what we want. 3) yep, if you are really good with your data and have a velocity chart mapped, you'd be able to do this. 4) I haven't used the app, cause it's still only for iOS, so maybe there is something there? The standalone units don't have any tracking though.
@12PieceAndaSoda21 күн бұрын
@ interesting okay I did not know that. I hope you’re wrong on the eccentric mode 😅😅. What do you mean by inverse band setting only works on its own? Couldn’t it still be used for lengthened muscle weight training?
@GrayMatterLifting21 күн бұрын
@12PieceAndaSoda I'm actually looking at my VOLTRA right now. It looks like a recent update may have changed the band setting quite a bit. Before it was limited on total resistance and adjustments. Now it looks like it can go all the way up to 200lbs. You can't combine the inverse band with eccentric load adjustments, but it does automatically adjust from lighter at the start of the rep to heavier at the end, so you could manipulate that for rows and stuff. Glad you asked, cause I hadn't seen that change.
