Need your expertise: I am needing to change this cage to a longer one. Is it possible to swap a cage from a similar suntour derailleur and put on this Sprint? You seem most knowledgeable so would appreciate your advice. Thank you!

Also, if you find there's too much play at the mounting bolt, I found a very simple method to stiffen the mounting bolt on old SRAM XO and X9 rear derailleurs. Simply add a greased up o-ring between the B-plate and the bike drop-out before installing the derailleur. This pushes the B plate towards the wave washer, compressing it more and making the joint there stiffer. It worked wonders on my mountain bike! O-Ring size: -014: 1/2"ID x 5/8OD x 1/16CD

Those 4 pivot pins do come out, though it's not useful to do it. They are pressed into a black nylon sleeve washer, and there's currently no replacement for those. It's best to not mess with them, but they can be gently pressed out ( I used a small hex key to do it ).

I have this issue where when I'm on the small front chain ring and either hit a bump or sometimes when I switch from the big chain ring, the chain bounces a bit and it makes the chain ever so slightly slip off the guide pulley and it makes a skipping sound. I can then back pedal and it fixes it. It works fine 90% of the time and have a brand new hanger and have messed with the indexing a lot. It's driving me crazy. I'm starting to think it may have something to do with the spring since it's the chain bouncing a bit that causes it. Ultegra 6800. I'm going to take it apart and clean it, but any ideas?

Thanks for the video. I have a set of very similar ones on a 96 Klein Mantra Comp I purchased a few months ago. (Reads Mach 5 Cartridge on the side) I think they are the originals that came with the bike. They do function very well so I assume they have been rebuilt or the bike wasn't ridden that hard. Most the original parts are on the bike except one wheel looks different (one black one silver, though looks like from the same year generation of parts). When I gotten it it didn't shift well if at all. I replace one rear cable and did some adjustments and cleaning and it shifts in almost everything gear except the smallest front sprocket. (I don't care since I don't use those gears). I really like the Klein since it's a unique looking bike that still rides well despite it's age.

I've watched a bunch of your videos rebuilding Marzocchi forks, these forks are a marvel of engineering and precision compared to contemporaries of the time and even now if you ask me.

These Marzocchi forks seem really well made; I just picked one off eBay with a 1" steer tube so I can rebuild it and put it on my Specialized Hardrock Sport.

How close is the shaft of the shock unit supposed to be to the upper linkage and what might I have done wrong if it is touching? I think maybe the coil spring I salvaged from a random shock is a few mm too long? I had to preload a little it just to install into the shock with the blue nut all the way out

Good video. Not sure I understood about the two types of oil, right and left post… not clear. Any alternative to SRAM butter, for those who do that once in a lifetime? Some other grease that’s comparable?
@chriscleeland54722 ай бұрын
You can pull the whole cage off if you remove the screw that you said was for tension--it's actually there to keep the pivot pin captive inside the knuckle. I've transplanted a whole cage from one derailleur to another. The RED of the same generation have a steel screw by a titanium pivot pin, and eventually the steel screw wears through the pivot pin. The rival (and force) have steel pins.

Ive always seen people use synthetic bike lubricant for the pulleys instead of grease, they would usually just grease the springs, not sure the reasoning but thought i would share

Something you may have overlooked: if you tighten the screws going through the wheels, it will lock them…. Not sure how to resolve that problem.

Regarding the spring - the one that extends the parallelogram - I , too, had difficulty reassembling it and not cross threading the retaining pin. After two attempts, I noticed there was a small hole drilled into the bore of the upper mounting bolt area of the derailleur. I tried locating the short end of the spring into that hole, and it fitted perfectly, allowing correct alignment of the spring and retaining bolt, with no cross threading. I don't know for sure that the spring's tail is intended to fit into that hole, but it works well that way.

Looks like you have the one with non-original pulleys. When I disassembled mine, I was surprised to see a really high-quality bearing pulley and ceramic! bushing pulley. And this is in SLX, insane how quality dropped over two decades.

There are at least two types of the Positron derailleur. One has the indexing function in the derailleur. The other type has it in the shift handle. They both work well if you keep them clean, adjusted and lubricated. Thanks for the video!
