Why not put a the backwater valve / Cleanout at the main line outside of the house and close to the street to avoid the whole house having any issue whatsoever.
@plumber-tom9470Күн бұрын
Great idea. The problem is accessibility. The sewer in many places is so deep that an additional manhole would be required to access the valve. That is why it is most often installed inside the building. Also, fixtures that are not below the next upstream manhole in the street are not required to pass through the back water valve. If the valve were installed outside the building it would require a separate building drain, which is not ideal.

My last tank, vertically mounted in copper pipe failed due to heavy rusting caused by galvanic corrosion between the copper and steel. The female copper fitting was so loaded with corrosion products from the steel that I had to replace it to get a good seal. I have a 3/4 F-M NPT PVC fitting that I'm going to install between the tank and copper to electrically isolate them.
@plumber-tom94703 күн бұрын
Bummer. Sounds like you have a plan. You make an important point. Steel should not be connected directly to copper or it will cause electrolysis which corrodes pipes. Plastic or brass can serve as isolating materials.

1:37 “If I know my [water system pressure] is at 66 psi, I should fill up the air chamber to 65 psi” What “water system pressure” is this referring to? I’ve seen videos saying you should measure the pressure using an outside bib. But both ChatGPT and an HVAC person I spoke to say that the pressure you should set the expansion tank to is the cold water pressure of the boiler system, not the water system of the house. This means the tank should be set to anywhere between 12-15 psi, not 50-60+ which is what an outside faucet would be. So I’m confused. Which one is it?
@plumber-tom94706 күн бұрын
The "water system" referred to in this video is the potable water system. Boilers are a separate system that operate at a lower pressure. So the HVAC person was correct for the expansion tank for the boiler system. But you should have a separate system and tank for that. The expansion tank for your potable hot water should be pressurized to the pressure of the system delivering water to your fixtures. I don't trust ChatGPT for plumbing information. It pulls information from people who don't know what they are talking about.
@jc_alpha5 күн бұрын
@@plumber-tom9470Thanks for the reply. I have a boiler and the expansion tank is attached to one of the pipes near it. I replaced the tank and set its pressure to match that of an outside bib, but now I realize I was way off. None of the videos I’ve watched make the distinction between the two types of tanks/systems, so it’s a bit confusing. Thanks again for clearing that up. I just set mine to 15psi.

Day after christmas two years ago, I got a call from my wife at work stating that water was leaking down from the ceiling in our bathroom; our 2nd floor bathroom is right above our master bathroom. I called the plumber and he was PO'ed b/c he said that the flange extender on it was all wrong; house was built in 2007 and we bought it in 2019. We had our insurance people come out and take a look and they fixed everything, but the subfloor had rotted out. Most likely, during building, the flange had been cut flush with the subfloor and then when the tile people finished, the plumber came back and installed the toilet but then had to install the extender to make it sit right and eventually that failed. As things were finishing up on the repairs, I thought to myself, "well, if they installed that one wrong, what about the others...?" So I had the plumbers pull all the other toilets (three on the 1st floor) and all three were the same way. Our master toilet's subfloor was completely gone and the toilet was only being up the tile! I had them repair everything and then had the plumber cut the pipe way high. Then when the tile floor was done, I had them cut the pipe to the floor and then install the flange on top of the finished floor, as you're supposed to!

Why would you glue a pea trap on? I like to be able to unscrew mine and clean it out
@plumber-tom94706 күн бұрын
Good question. P-Traps that are hidden in walls, floors or ceilings should be glue traps because they are not accessible. Slip Joint P-Traps should only be used in places where they can be accessed. The P-Trap for a washer box is inside the wall so it should be glued.

Hello, how is the flap attached to main body? Will it stay in place in a severely overcharged sewer system from torrential rain. I saw a Oatey brand, and it looked like the flap could be lifted easily up and off. Didn't seem like a good design ,if I am actually seeing it correctly. Thanks
@plumber-tom94706 күн бұрын
Some of the models can be lifted out of place, which is a problem. Some manufacturers have improved their design and connected the flap to a ring so it cannot come out of place.
@flipper24735 күн бұрын
Thanks, my existing valve, is longer than the ones I am seeing advertised on line. Right now there are 4" long fernco black coupling with steel clamps. Since a newer shorter valve would replace it, is it acceptable to only have a inch overlap of fernco on both ends of fernco? Or would I have to figure out something like a PVC connector inside valve to extend length? Thanks
@atkgrl2 күн бұрын
The Oatey flap only comes out of place when the screw top is off which is what secures it in place.

If slope is not given, how do you know by code what to do? Ran into this on my Masters test. No slope and it could of been 4" or 3" depending.
@plumber-tom94705 күн бұрын
Code dictates slope for all pipe sizes on IPC Table 704.1. If you know the pipe size, you can determine the minimum slope.

When determining pipe size on building drain with 48.5 DFUs i see it should be 4”. But if i move past two branch lines that have 9.5 DFUs do i move to a 3”? Also if no slope is given what slop size should i use?
@plumber-tom94705 күн бұрын
Yes you can decrease the building drain pipe size as the dfus carried by the pipe decrease. Reducing from 4" to 3" when toward the end of the horizontal branch can be a great way to save money because 4" fittings and pipe cost more than 3". When no slope is given, you can go on the minimum requirements on IPC Table 704.1.

Inquiry: Water heater closet located and access at exterior wall. I added drain pan for extra precaution, pan drains straight outside. With the pan installed, water heater does not touch back finished wall. I added two 2x4 horizontal bracing to back wall to allow water heater to contact 2x4 bracing, then earthquake strap. Okay with the use of horizontal bracing build up? Probably just make sure horizontal brace have multiple fastening point into the studs it spans across? Have not finished viewing all your videos, but hoping to see water heater insulation install instruction with earthquake strap. Unsure if strapping around insulation is allowed or strap needs to have direct contact with heater and having to cut insulation into 3 sections. Look forward to learning the terminology and plumbing code interpretation you convert into visual format. Thank you!
@plumber-tom947029 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching. Sounds like you did a good job putting some backing behind the water heaters. I have done that before to create a secure hold. You definitely want those boards anchored into studs in the wall. I don't usually install insulation on a water heater tank. It can help a little bit, but from a conversation with a manufacturer rep, I was told they don't make a huge difference. Either way, I think it is better to insulate first, then strap.

May I ask why in 9:41 the developed length does not start from the bottom level where the vent connects to the drain as the "farthest point"? To me that seems to include the entire length of the vent.
@plumber-tom947029 күн бұрын
Developed length on venting can vary. They should all start from the drain, but the develop length can end outdoors or at a stack vent or vent stack. So it just depends on the situation.

May I ask why in the diagram showing at 15:36 does not provide vent for some of WC? I can see some WC and UR are using common vent, but some WC do not seem to have their own vents.

That is a good question. As I examine it, the probably should have vents or at least a dry vent serving as a circuit vent. Good eye.

No it is not the whole fitting. The fitting allowance is the space inside the fitting from the end of the pipe to the center of the fitting.
