Thanks Tom! Your videos have been very helpful in understanding the IPC, as it pertains to all the sizing charts, along with the illustrations. I’ve been plumbing in California and have exclusively used the UPC. I’m in Texas now and other plumbers here are always mentioning other venting methods, I’ve always used individual vents or a seldom wet vent off of a toilet vent. I’m currently preparing for the Journeyman Plumbers license Exam, and your videos have helped immensely! Thanks again

At 9:12 I thought a bidet and emergency floor drain is included in a bathroom group so technically you could out two bidets and two emergency floor drains on the wet vent? am i missing something just trying to learn. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us Tom!
@plumber-tom94704 ай бұрын
You can do that. But the emergency floor drain vent cannot be used as a wet vent.

So happy I found your videos! Had an inspector tell the plumber to place the vent in a Comb Waste System upstream of the farthest floor drain and it will vent the entire line (consisting of 2 floor drains). I thought the vent always had to be downstream of the most upstream fixture. But the Code says the Dry Vent can be located anywhere in the system. Can you explain 915.2.3 to us?

The idea behind the combination waste and vent system is to be able to extend a drain pipe to a trap without a vent immediately nearby. The venting requirement ensures that there will be air flow from somewhere, whether it be a dry vent or wet vent connection on the same floor level. This creates flexibility, but also provides airflow from a vent. I think it is good too look at a combination drain and vent this way - we are allowed to extend a trap arm out farther than usual by oversizing the pipe to provide air flow. That is my interpretation.

Your videos are clear and helpful. Can you do a video explaining 917 and providing examples of how one can use that code section for residential homes? Seems like most people avoid that section, so it's hard to find explanations and examples of how it can be used.

Hello. 917 is really not designed for residential. It is used in tall buildings, like skyscrapers, with the exact same fixture layout one floor after another. There are so many other better vent options for residential. But if you did use it in residential, it would look like plumbing from the 1950s with a huge stack going up the middle and fixtures branching off.

Vent loops are still quite common in this area for Island sinks. Now that I think about it, I don't know that I have ever seen an AAV being used on an island around here. I should try to find out if that is just a preference of the local inspector or if there is a reason everybody is required to do it 🤔
