Hi, thanks for responding. I appreciate your personal response. As I mentioned, I didn't know if it was true or not about the static! I just wanted to share a note I heard about with a fellow Leica owner. Thanks again. Paul Conway P.S. I really enjoy your videos!

Hi, I have watched your videos off and on, and your knowledge is excellent on cameras! Your explanations of camera gear is very sober and clear. I want to add a little tidbit on the video of Leica m3. Not knowing if true or not, I heard that when the camera was designed for the rewind know, it was made purposely to be rewound in a slow manner! The reason was if rewound to fast streaks of static electricity could appear on the film according to the environment you were in photographing! I just acquired one, and had an m3 many years ago and always regreted selling it. Now I have another, and this one stays with me!! Thanks take care. Paul Conway

The Leica M3 is a great companion! I haven’t heard about electrostatic charges affecting the film on a manually rewound camera but I have read that in the owners manual of my Nikon F3 as it pertains to auto rewind using the motor drive. I mention it in my video review of the F3. I guess it’s possible but hard to imagine that manually rewinding the camera would cause that to happen.

The F6 isn't that reliable because it has a lot of electronics that could fail. When changing batteries data, clock, date, hour are run by an internal rechargable buffer battery that died after near 20 year of use on my F6. Nikon repaired it recently but the bill was huge. My FM3A that is also a 21st century film Nikon camera and never failed.

Hello Eric! I have two Canon A1s, but since I started using manual mode more I prefer other cameras of the time like the Minolta XD-7 that allows you to see in the viewfinder at all times the exposure chosen and the one recommended by the camera. In any case the A-1 is an excellent camera. Another highly recommended camera is the Konica autoreflex T3. Now a small con of the futuristic A-1, the battery door is very fragile and uncomfortable to open without fear of breaking (as you showed us)it. The program mode does not have program shift something that the XD-7 does have despite not being called program in shutter speed priority mode one can choose the minimum shutter speed in which the camera will try to find the necessary aperture to obtain a good exposure and if the largest aperture is not enough to obtain a correct exposure then the camera at the time of taking the photo corrects the shutter speed necessary to compensate effectively acting as a program mode allowing the user to choose a starting shutter speed.

@@FilmPhotographyChannel Question: I received a SRT 101 from KEH. As soon as I received it I advanced the shutter and shot a few time to check it out. After the third one or so the shutter got stuck and would not allow me to advance the shutter so to speak. I opened the back and it was back to normal. I was able to advance the shutter and shoot again. Today I loaded it up with film and took a photo. But anyways, would you be able to tell me why that happened?
@FilmPhotographyChannel23 күн бұрын
I wouldn’t know exactly because I’m not a technician but I have read that there’s a string inside these cameras that can cause problems if it isn’t properly tensioned. I had an SRT (I mentioned in the video) that wouldn’t advance the film properly. The film on the take up spool would get bigger as I went through the roll, to the point that the sprocket wasn’t grabbing the holes in the film anymore and would stop advancing. I would advise you to return it and get a good working copy because a repair may well exceed the value of the camera.

I grew up with point and shoot film cameras like the 110 rectangular cameras. We later got a 35mm point and shoot. We bought the cheapest film. I never learned about the different film stocks or shot black and white film. 7 years ago I got into actual photography with my first DSLR. I've owned 2 DSLR bodies (still have the first one) and 2 mirrorless bodies. Back in April (2024) I bought an old Canon AE-1 and got back into film. A couple of months ago I bought a SRT 202 off fb market for $40. It has the 50mm lens but the lens has fungus inside the lenses. Last week I was on vacation in Arkansas and found a 50mm lens in a consignment shop for $14. When I got to the cash register to pay the woman said it was 45% off and was $11. A could of days later I found a 28mm at a flea market for $20. I also bought a Nikon FM2M and an F4 from a fb friend while I was out there. I bought a 28mm lens from a camera store in Florida for them for $90. I said I wasn't going to start shooting film because I didn't want to buy another set of lenses. Then I said I'm not going to start developing my own film at home. Well...... I'm going to stop saying I'm not going to do something because I keep eating my words and I'm getting full. I'll be looking for a medium format camera before you know it and then set up a dark room for making prints.

Great comparison, thank you! I received a brand new Canonet QL17 as an 8th grade graduation gift and am fortunate enough to never have sold it -- and I still use it! I eventually picked up the companion flash a few years ago but never used it until a couple weeks ago. Wow. Of course it's needed some maintenance over the years but the quality of this camera continues to astound me.. focusing is easy, photos are sharp and the light meter still works as good as new.

Great video! I noticed your first side-by-side comparison was using JPGs which means you are probably seeing some compression artifacts on both sides. Also, any Lightroom mode except develop uses the generated previews which can be significantly lower quality than the originals. That does mean you need to flip between images vs doing side by side, but develop mode with TIFF would let you show off the pure differences. Keep it up - great stuff!

There's a trick to keep the shutter speed at 1/400. It's on a KZbin video. My camera arrives next week, so we'll see. It could also be said that a rule of thumb for minimum shutter speed is the inverse of the focal length, so 1/40 should be OK. Maybe practice holding steady? Or bracing yourself against a tree or something.

I remember shooting my first roll of Velvia 50, I shot it twice between June 2018, and March 2020. Nowadays it's harder to find Velvia because I already know that Ektachrome (the new one) is taking over the slide film industry and it was the only one that is still around over Fujifilm's Velvia 50, and the now discontinuted Velvia 100 which makes Ektachrome the only one left in the world that is still better than Velvia. I don't know how true it was, Velvia 50 reminds me of Kodachrome 25 based on the people who used to shoot this stuff, when they changed it to Velvia, it was convenience to shoot over Kodachrome. Is that make sense?
@FilmPhotographyChannelАй бұрын
It does make sense. I really like the look from the slower speed Kodak slide films. It’s absolutely gorgeous! Sharp, colorful, contrasty-perfect! The problem for me is that I’m not methodical enough to follow every step in the picture taking and development process to achieve the perfect result from this wonderful film. I end up with a lot of improperly exposed shots that can’t be salvaged. I enjoy shooting Ektar 100 much more and I get a similar result albeit on a more reddish palette vs the blue hues when I shoot Velvia. Ektar is absolutely beautiful in my opinion and a lot more forgiving than any slide films

I was reasonably happy with the Epson software for my V600, but it's not supported anymore on newer Macs. I went to Silverfast, but hate the interface and the poor automatic frame detection, among other issues like the clunkiness of batch scanning. Just installed Vuescan and am hoping for a better workflow.
@FilmPhotographyChannelАй бұрын
There’s definitely a learning curve for both Vuescan and Silverfast. I went through it. I’ve found that I get better scans from silverfast in terms of color and dynamic range. Viescan is powerful but harder to learn.
@djtoman6875Ай бұрын
@@FilmPhotographyChannel I still find Silverfast maddening. Vuescan may also be equally maddening, but I'm liking the ability to scan .dng files that have nice lattitude and aren't ginormous, so I can open up a folder, tweak in Lightroom, and open in Photoshop to spot touch up if necessary. I might just end up "scanning" with a digital camera.
@FilmPhotographyChannelАй бұрын
@djtoman6875 The trick to Silverfast is to NOT try to learn all of it because it can do some things that you will never need. I use auto exposure first, then tweak sharpness, color and just a couple of other settings to get the photo how I want it. Alternatively I use “Real Raw” method and “develop” later. VueScan also offers this same process.

Hi, late to this video i'm aware of it. Hope to get a response though. Can you regulate the hight of the mount like you can do with the Betterscaning one? Thank you very much.
@FilmPhotographyChannel2 ай бұрын
It’s not height adjustable because a height adjustment exists to compensate for film that for different reasons may not lay perfectly flat. Since the wet scanning process adheres the film to the glass it’s always at the same height from the scanner’s lens so there’s never any need to focus. I didn’t see an equivalent film holder on the betterscanning website. There was one that looks like it was made primarily for 4x5 film stock. The Epson product, in my opinion is a better option especially since it’s designed to work with the Epson V700/800/750/850 line of scanners. It holds the film at the perfect distance for optimal focus and is perfectly flat also. The betterscanning holders are know for their anti newton ring textured glass which holds film flat without the need for fluids and that prevents newton rings from appearing in your scans.

Accessories for the Rollei 35 s and 35SE are presently (2024) surprisingly easy to acquire. For lens hoods, there are many Chinese rubber copies of the original Rollei item and also many hard, metal hoods. I found that my original Rollei rubber hood rotted with age, so I recommend not to buy the real thing off eBay. Rollei offered a very limited selection of filters for the Rollei 35S/SE, not worth the price they tend to command today. Conventional 30.5mm filters in a wide variety are sold on eBay for less than half the price of the originals and are just as good, or better when coated. Over the years, Rollei included protective pouches in real leather pouches or high quality vinyl, either being nice and common. However, there was also a separate semi-hard, fitted "everyready" style case which is now hard to find but nice if acquired. There were also hard sided box-type cases which are not very nice and have not held up that well - avoid them and their Chinese copies. Finally, to mitigate that useless flash hot shoe on the camera bottom, Rollei originally sold a small extension bracket and a slip-in adapter to give a PC plug to work with mounting a regular flash to the side of the camera. The whole little package originally sold for $4.95 retail. Today, you can find the flash bracket with little effort for a few dollars. However, the PC plug adapter to fit into the hotshoe AND work with the bracket is almost always missing. That adapter commonly goes for $50 to $75 if found. (A generic PC adapter will fit the hotshoe, but will not fit the bracket.) I searched for many years and finally found one, but I had to buy an unneeded Rollei 35S to go with it.

I just bought a Yashica Electo35 Gsn and a Canon Ql17 g3 over the last 2 days. I'm excited I'm glad my money went to cameras that were comparable to a Leica in any way. I know they aren't Leicas since Leica makes more then just images production it's an experince and everything inside the body with all the moving parts are grade a . But I can't afford that experince yet so I'm glad I can get somewhat in the ballpark with image quailty after this video I'll probably put a few rolls threw it and set it on the desk next to my other film cameras and primarily use my canon but who knows everyone's experience can be a lil different I may preference the yashica for some other reasons. Either way I'm excited to get them in my hands hopefully they won't get lost in the mail.

The price of admission for Leica cameras is not cheap! I traded a lens and a Zeiss Ikon 35mm rangefinder camera to get my first Leica M6. I still had to come up with $400 and that was over 17 years ago! The good news is that my current M6 is now worth over $3000! I guess my point is that if you pay a premium for something, it’s good that it keeps its value so you don’t lose money in the long run. Both of your cameras take EXCELLENT photos, especially the Canonet. In my opinion the QL17 GIII is the best fixed lens 35mm rangefinder that you can buy. In that opinion I factor in the durability also. I’ve dropped my Canonet on concrete and even though it had a nasty dent, it continued to function and without light leaks. The Yashica has a great lens but I experienced lots of problems as I outlined in the video. It’s a great looking camera which gets you admirers as you walk about because it’s simply beautiful.
