It's definitely not a pretty sign having fleece over everything, but the short term is worth it for the long-term gain and health of the plants. Next week warms up a little bit, at least! Roll on spring

@YorkshireTropics
@YorkshireTropics 26 күн бұрын
Hopefully then both our Miscanthus will grow much better next year then, I didn't expect it to slow down quite so much to be honest. The yellow wave has been through the last few winters absolutely fine and never shown any signs of damage. The C. Charlie Boy has only been planted from this spring and I'm not sure if I owned it before winter but if I did it stayed in the unheated greenhouse last winter which being dry and frost free it would obviously be fine anyway. It's reportedly one of the more hardy Cordylines so I do have high hopes for it underplanted below the palm. Thank you for watching 😃

@@YorkshireTropics I am 50 miles north of Seattle Washington US. We are designated as USDA Zone 8a but the last three years were in Zone 7a temperatures. S. taiwaniana was defoliated the first year, killed back to 6ft ( from 12ft) the second year, and killed completely the third year. I will replant that species in the spring and hope for our proper winter following. Musa bajoo has just gone down last night, as our first killing frost was 2/3 weeks late this year
@YorkshireTropics
@YorkshireTropics Ай бұрын
@timmillan6701 That's explains why Delavayi is more readily available for you than me then. Those are some real cold temperatures and not something I get in my area often, although it's not unheard of, so it would be nice if those sorts of temps don't come around anytime soon! That is a real shame to lose a S. Taiwaniana from what was a 12ft specimen!

@YorkshireTropics
@YorkshireTropics Ай бұрын
I had a decent sized Peko out for a few years and never protected it at all and last winter killed it strangely enough. Southern Splendour is a tender plant but if you do as I've done in this video and add a fleece bag or just fleece it in the worst of days it'll give them a good chance. If you can plant them under something taller to give them that overhead protection that can honestly make a huge difference.

Great plants. I brought 3 Alpinas a couple of months back which are in my greenhouse for winter. 2 for me and 1 for a friend. Princeps Hybrids are great plants as well and good growers in my experience too.

I wasn't really planning on buying more plants before winter but when the Schefflera popped up I couldn't resist in case I couldn't get any next year, so I thought I best get them. I am surprised Rhododendrifolia isn't more widely available really because I thought it was supposed to be one of the hardier ones?.. Well if you end up with a spare cutting of one I'd be more than happy to purchase one from you. Do you have much success with growing from seed? Yes I agree the Princeps hybrids are great plants and seem to have a good bit of vigour to them. Thanks for watching bud
@tikitropicals65
@tikitropicals65 2 ай бұрын
@ If the seed from rhododendrifolia is fresh they germinate easy. It’s then about keeping them in the right conditions to keep them alive. I had quite a few seedlings last year but no where to really grow them on from small seedlings and through my own neglect lost all but one which I still have. This year if the berries ripen I will make much more effort with them. I’ve found them hard from cuttings they are probably better air layered really.
@YorkshireTropics
@YorkshireTropics 2 ай бұрын
That is what I found when I tried to grow Alpina from seed last year I got them to germinate and then lost them all over the coming months and I wasn't even entirely sure why. I'll try again with some more when the seed becomes available soon because it's fun to try over winter when it's too dark to get out in the garden.
