Great video! I am a general contractor and someone asked me how to paint a bathroom. I knew if I searched KZbin long enough I would find the right video.

I’m planning on doing this above our fireplace and your tutorial is literally the best tutorial I’ve ever watched on anything. I like that you even gave a cheaper option of bead board. Every step was very clear. Thank you!

What is the difference between German smear, and regular white wash??
@mrsashleyfrench2 күн бұрын
White wash is typically done with a mix of white paint and water and German smear is done with a thicker, textured putty-like product like joint compound. I was hesitant to use a watery white-wash on the brick panels because they are made from MDF and it can swell and warp if it gets too wet.

Thanks for the video! Do you deal with any leaves falling on your mulch? Is it pretty easy to get the leaves out without dislodging the mulch?
@mrsashleyfrench13 күн бұрын
Yes, we have a decent amount of leaves that fall into the mulch. You can use a leaf blower to blow them out pretty easily without having the mulch blow out too. But honestly, I don't even bother. The dead laves crumble up and aren't really noticeable when he is playing.

@mrsashleyfrench what sheen did you use on the wall and boards semi gloss or flat??
@mrsashleyfrench15 күн бұрын
I always use Satin on my walls and the skinny boards on this geometric wall are also satin. For my baseboards and door trim at home, I used satin as well but would recommend using semi-gloss on baseboards since they wipe off easier when cleaning with semi-gloss.

How did you cut the corners into the tile? Were you able to do that with the kit as well?
@mrsashleyfrench17 күн бұрын
I did use the kit but it was not ideal at all and I broke a few tiles before getting it right. That kit really is designed to only do straight line cuts. They do make these tile snippers that I would use if I did it again: amzn.to/3UQMIaK

How do you get the paint to roll on the wall, all i manage to get is a blob, took 3 hrs of hard work trying to do one wall, and i had to use a brush too, i was exhausted and coukdnt bear to do another coat. How on earth do you get the roller to cover the wall?
@mrsashleyfrench17 күн бұрын
I'm not sure if I understand what is happening but It sounds like you have too much paint on your roller. Try putting less paint in your paint tray, then lightly roll your roller into the paint in the tray, then roll your roller in the paint tray on the slanted surface of the tray (where there is no paint) to get a lot of the excess paint off your roller. Then when you roll your roller on the wall, you shouldn't get any kind of blob or anything.
@Linda-rn7pg16 күн бұрын
Hi, thanks for the reply, when I try gently rolling the roller over the paint it never really rolls. It's strange as many years ago I did all my decorating and used to love it, so I know I never had that issue before.

Does the 1x4 overlap on the beadboard or is it placed directly above the beadboard?
@mrsashleyfrench19 күн бұрын
So I have done this same beadboard accent wall a couple times over the years and typically I just place the 1x4 right on top/above the beadboard and then caulk the seam between them. This particular wall that I made the video with, we actually used a router table and routed out a small channel/groove on the back of the 1x4 so that it would sit slightly flush over the beadboard a hair. It is not necessary at all to do it this way and I didn't include it in the video because I thought it was a little advance and most people don't have a router.

How easy is it to remove with the nails in place?
@mrsashleyfrench22 күн бұрын
If you mean, how easy is it to pull the boards off the wall, if you haven't caulked the edges you can just give the boards a really good tug and you'll be able to pull them off the wall. If you have caulked the edges, then you would want to use a carpet knife to cut between the caulk and wall and then pull the boards off. I like to use a trim puller also to pull the boards off.
@luke5046922 күн бұрын
@mrsashleyfrench awesome thank you. Great video by the way. I ask because my wife and I live in an apartment and we have a baby on the way and I would like to do this in the nursery so I wanted to see if it was easily removed (renter friendly)
@mrsashleyfrench22 күн бұрын
@@luke50469 If you are renting, I would just skip the caulking where the boards meet the wall. Then the boards will pull off pretty easily and you'll only be left with tiny holes in the wall from the brad nails that can be filled with nail hole filler or maybe even just paint.
@luke5046921 күн бұрын

A good tip, instead of using tape to remove lint from a roller. Give it a wash and scrub with your finger nails, also leave the roller slightly damp. This will aid in making the roller absorb paint easier as opposed to using a dry roller.

You already had 1x6 as the floor trim and 1x4 cased widows without a sill. Most retrofits will need to deal with replacing/ retrofitting these which will be a big job. You probably should have pointed this out.
@mrsashleyfrench26 күн бұрын
I added both the baseboards and window trim myself, however neither are needed to accomplish this accent wall. This accent wall can be done exactly the same without adding either of those. People can do this right on their existing baseboards. If you were a follower of mine, you would have seen that I have shared a tutorial on how to add this and keep your existing baseboards.

@mrsashleyfrenchАй бұрын
They are pricey. I think it could be a nice feature wall on a smaller wall or area as opposed to a big blank wall. Back when I did this project, the panels were about 25% cheaper but they have raised the prices since then.
@brendalofrano9139Ай бұрын
@@mrsashleyfrench thank you for replying . Even though they are pricey, they still look good. I’ll have to come up with another cheaper idea for my living room.

Hi Ashley, if the baseboard thickness is around 0.5 inch and if i use mdf board with 1 inch thickness.. will that look odd? Shall i use 0.5 inch thick mdf board. Not planning on removing the base board
@mrsashleyfrenchАй бұрын
If you are able to use MDF that is the same thickness as your baseboards that would definitely be the easiest option. If you end up using MDF that is thicker, I did make a video on my instagram showing a solution to this problem. Here is the video: instagram.com/reel/Cg-ocUGMDNU/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
