I owe you a GREAT BIG Thank you! I've been a follower of Mind of Watercolor for several years. One video you discussed that you sometimes teach online Strathmore Workshops, so I began watching them. Well, this Oct. I looked to see if you had a workshop and saw a Survey Strathmore asked us to fill out. A note said a random winner would be chosen. They had 4 workshops supplies listed, needed to choose one. Well, you didn't have one but there was a workshop that included watercolor and colored pencils. Why do I owe you a thank you? Strathmore emailed me Nov. 4 (my birthday !) that I had been chosen and the supplies for the workshop were on their way! Yesterday, I received a 11 lb . box full of wonderful art supplies. 5 Paper Pads of Strathmore Papers, watercolors, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, permanent markers, polycolor and ... Princeton Watercolor Brushes, one is 1" Neptune Mottler! I can't believe I received such a Blessing! I hope it's okay I commented here, didn't know how else to communicate with you. Oh, I let Strathmore know that I learned about their workshops from you. Thank you so much!

Ooh! That’s great to know! I have a tin of the Inktense XL Blocks that I use to “get rid of the white” on my 1st layer of canvas for abstract mixed media paintings. They stay relatively fixed in the areas that I get wet, but I’ll try ironing the areas that I don’t, for any lines that I want to keep as-is.

I picked out a few Inktense pencils with blue wool ratings 7-8 and use them for underpainting shadows. Once they are **fully dry** (at least overnight), they don't mix with watercolor layers. My favorite colors for this purpose are Bark, Dark Purple and Deep Indigo. This made my portrait painting process so much easier and more enjoyable! (Working on a video about it at the moment.) I tested lifting Inktense by firm scrubbing immediately after drying (it lifts fairly easily), and the following day (it barely lifts). So timing makes all the difference. That's not as useful for plein air. I prefer regular watercolor pencils for finishing touches (Van Gogh, Albrecht Dürer, Museum Aquarelle) because they are more subtle and stay sharp for longer. My Inktense pencils are blunt all the time 😅
@Rockymtnbloom8 күн бұрын
What is a blue wool rating?
@NelaDunato8 күн бұрын
@Rockymtnbloom Blue Wool and ASTM are two standards for testing and rating the lightfastness of art materials, that is how long they are able to withstand UV light (such as natural sunlight) before starting to visibility fade. BW 6-8 and LF I & II are considered suitable for use in art for display or sale (or giving as a gift, if you want to ensure it lasts). Derwent uses BW scale for their pencils and sticks. Caran D'Ache and Talens Van Gogh use ASTM, and Derwent Lightfast line as well. Faber-Castell doesn't specify which standard their ratings correspond to (I assume neither, because some of them are incorrect).

I adore Inktense. I use them as a base wash layer for my crushed Japanese Masa Paper batik style colored pencil works. I use regular CP over the Inktense layers for a moody, atmospheric effect. My pieces have gotten in the last 2 international competitions, so a winning tech for me.

I was so excited to see that you reviewed Inktense pencils. I started using them with my travel sketches last year. I will often hold 4-5 pencils in my hand and use my water brush to touch the ends of the pencils and “paint” with them in my travel journals. I am able to the blend colors as I would with my watercolor paints without having to “set up” my travel pans with water and brushes. It has also allowed me to “watercolor” on fabric (using aloe vera) which is then permanent. I love being able to create watercolor effects on more media.

I have the 24 set of Inktense pencil and the 12 set of Inktense XL blocks. I use the XL blocks to lay down large areas of color and I also use them to create an “ink reservoir”. I’ll put down a bunch of heavy marks where my most intense use of color is. Then I will wet it and work the pool of ink across the paper to where it needs to go. Then I use the pencils in a similar way but for smaller areas and then the details later. I just ordered the 72 set of Inktense blocks. They will mostly replace the pencils for smaller areas of color. Then I can just use the pencils for detail work.

I have both the blocks and pencils. It's interesting they are slightlt opaque since the previous layer doesn't activate if it was fully activated and dried already. So you can layer on top of each other more easily than wc pencils. I love the white nktense block. It's like gouache white except it stays put so you can even paint or inktense over that

I use watersoluable pencils for drawing as well and honestly there is nothing like the feel of the Albrecht Durers for me ... the Caran d'Ache lines come close in terms of the feel, but the FC are just perfect to draw with ... they are silky and hold a point, giving me more control over line weight. I always found the Inktense a little sticky when using dry. Love the vibrancy but I don't feel like I lack that in the Faber Castell and Caran d'Ache pencils I have in my stash. Not to mention the solid hexagonal body of the Durers just feel so good in the hand, especially when the pencils get shorter.

Although I generally prefer watercolor pencils (Museum Aquarelles are my fav) for most applications, the one way in which I prefer using Inktense pencils is when I put down a clear water wash on the paper first, then rub the Inktense across the wet paper (for example, for foliage or trees). Wow, I just love the speed of putting down intense color that way! (I'm mostly an urban sketcher, so working fast is a priority.) Thank you for showing these comparisons!

I sometimes use the inktense pencils to color on vellum when I'm doing pergamano. I am a real beginner though and so far it seems to work as a substitute for the pergamano or oil pastel colors recommended. I do this by putting a damp brush on the pencil and then coloring the vellum as vellum doesn't like much water

I LOVE Inktense pencils! I do studies with them in sketchbooks. I draw the subject, then add the Inktense color. The trick is to not use too much because they are chocked full of pigment. Also, a light touch is best if you want to fully activate the color.

I haven’t tried the Inktense, but I have the Albrecht Dürer and I love them. I find them more controllable than traditional watercolor, especially in little and detailed drawings. As a substitute of watercolor, I think they are more convenient, meanwhile the Inktense would be better for illustrations. I use my watercolor pencils alone and also in mix media, often combined with Polychromos, that match perfectly.

When I first heard about Inktense Pencils and blocks, it was in the fiber arts community. This is where they are really going to be best used. To me, I found them to be disappointing on paper, because of a chalky appearance. But on fabric, to create art; activate and stitch it, that's a whole other thing! I own these in all 3 versions - the pencils, blocks, and pan paints. The only other drawback that I have noticed - Until you "know" these colors, you will want to paint by the color chart - as the colors don't reveal until activated with water. Perfect for waterbrush work!❤

I only have one Inktense pencil (looks covetously at your big box with cool dolphins) and I use it to lay down shade values and volume for vegetation. You can do a watercolor wash over it with color gradients and as you said, once activated and dry the inktense don’t budge much. Watercolor pencils are for drawing details over that. I only ever activate those when I use them over acrylic ink to create better details
@ilahjarvis7 күн бұрын
One important thing to keep in mind is that inks are generally not lightfast, or at least not as lightfast as most good quality watercolor paints. It would be interesting to do a side by side comparison by placing partially covered watercolor and intense pencils in a southern facing window and see which fades the most.
@mindofwatercolor7 күн бұрын
Sometimes true but inks can and often do contain lightfast pigments just like watercolor. Liquitex acrylic inks are a great example. Inktense are considered mostly lightfast but their color charts should be consulted for specifics. Dyes in inks instead of pigment are usually not considered lightfast.

I am so thankful for this comparison especially with Albrecht Durer's pencils, aince they are the most "flowy" and soulable from what I've come across so far. For me pencils are not very attractive since I get fatigued quickly, so the watercolor pencils is usually what I reach for. To achieve strong payoff I dip their tips in water. they are very useful on the go in plain air. I bought them thinking that they will give more seamless efect for details in watercolor paintings, but they give me more or a guashe vive than watercolor... So for details I think I prefer regular pencils and resist method

Hullo Steve, I enjoyed watching you work with these pencils, Well done! I like the Inktense Blocks so much more than the pencils! I seldom reach for my huge set of Albrecht Durer's, yet I have my AD's Magnus 30 pencil collection to do most every watercolor pencil job I have! They are simply wonderful to hold and use! I grew up using the Koh-I-Noor aqua pencils, in fact I did not know any other company made them as my little country art store only stocked the Koh-i-Noor brand of watercolor pencils as they were less expensive and nobody was interested in using pencils for watercolors! I grew up in the 60's and 70's and even the use of White was forbidden to use in watercolor paintings! I vividly remember getting my knuckles rapped quite hard when I showed my Gran a painting where I used a watercolor pencil! I look forward to seeing you do more creations with these wonderful mixed media tools!

I absolutely love Inktense, but if I want a line to stay put, I’ve started scribbling color on scrap paper and using a wet brush to draw the line (as opposed to drawing on my watercolor paper with the pencil). That way I know for sure none of the ink will travel once it is dry. Something else I’ve been enjoying is doing wet-into-wet work with washes of ink. It prevents the hard lines you get otherwise when doing washes. You can’t let the paper dry until you’ve got the full wash down though.

I started my watercolour journey with (student grade) wc pencils before I switched to water colours (pans). I like to use inktense pencils in coloring books because the colours are so bright. But I find it easier to mix colours (by applying the colours in layers before activating them) when I use wc pencils instead of inktense pencils. With inktense pencils the colours don't really mix or, when I use much much water, get muddy. That's my personal experience.

One test you didn't do was combine strokes of different colors and blend with water or layer one color over another when dry. It's fun to try different effects. I sometimes use my Inktense pencils for permanence on fabric with art quilts. But mostly I use them for making simple line and wash cards or bookmarks as gifts. I keep the coloring simple, and use permanent marker to add the line. I find them faster than getting out my watercolors. If I want more detail I can layer in more with regular colored pencil. One advantage is the artwork for bookmarks is permanent and if it gets damp it will not risk transferring color to a the book like watercolor would.

True but layering would be pretty similar to watercolor pencil which I've done in other videos. My specific goal here was to know how permanent they were with future washes applied over them compared to WC pencils

My experience with Inktense once the ink is completely activated, it won't move. Maybe try a lighter touch to the line.

Watercolor pencils can be good for drawing lines BEFORE applying watercolor or gouache. I haven't found a good use for inktense but have been considering them as I try my hand at ink drawings/paintings.

Have to be careful with the lightfastness of some of the Inktense.

Because they are more permanent, use the Inktense pencils to sign your paintings.
