Nice backwoods spot! Fiddleheads- the ones with the brown/gold Cape on them are edible, the ones without are not. Smaller the curls the better, once uncurled no longer good. Boil some up and put butter, salt and pepper on them. Great next to your brookies!

We would put the canoe in on the Mackey Creek road crossing and go upstream to the lakes now known as Mckenna Dunlop and Sweezy on Google Earth. Was a great 3 day trip... They were known as the First Second and Third Mackey lakes back then. Caught lots of trout there even in the dog days of summer. My all time favourite trip was hiking into McSourley Lake, in the park, now known as Lost Coin from the end of the Bissett Road which stopped at the park boundary... old logging trail for 6 miles but there was the most wonderful old logging camp you could stay at there made from hand squared white pine logs... 5 high was higher than I could reach. We would make rafts and fish Delphin spoons low and slow. Trout galore. lol I introduced a school friend to trout fishing there whom I have lost track of over the years and he became so enamoured of fish and fishing that he eventually became manager of the Fish Hatchery in Petawawa.

Amazed at how little the Point has changed.. the two kids fishing could have been my buddies and I fishing for Bass Perch or whatever in the same spot from 1953 to 1964. Like that they put in a boat launch... Just Northwest of it,where the warm Petawawa water meets the cold Ottawa there was the remnants of an old wharf for the log raft tugs... Beach depth went from one foot to 12 feet in about 2 yards... dangerous it was... on beach days we would station ourselves there to keep kids out of trouble... snorkelling there was fun as the really large walleyes would be on the cold bottom under the warm Petawawa water. The bar at the mouth was all sand with no vegetation back then and was a fun spot to swim to with the dog.
@NTSAdventuresАй бұрын
Great story! They mark that spot off now days as it is truly dangerous. I have never fished it but I might just give it a go. CHEERS.

Wonder if you can still catch trout at the railway highway bridge on the Big Tucker Creek... not far from your home...ggg
@keppoch2534Ай бұрын
The only Brookies I ever caught near Lake Traverse were at the bridge on the Crow and there was a little unnamed lake Northwest of the dam on Traverse... up a small brook about a half mile from the lake.... limit was 35 apiece.... catch that in an afternoon and be home in Petawawa around midnight...lol Dam was still there and there were still trains...The best trip was to Eustache Lake for Splake.... once fished 100 yds straight down from shore at the waterfall...was hard going but probably easy now.
@keppoch2534Ай бұрын
This reminds me of the long trips with my dad up the Bonnechere... railway trestles etc from the parking spot at end of trail near Flatiron Lake...there were still two trains a day so it got exciting crossing the really high bridges. We would carry a bunch of gear in the old army packs and fish Wolf Lake and then go the newly cut park line to Beechnut lake build a raft and catch the prettiest trout. Largest Brook Trout I ever caught in Ontario was on a dew worm fished on the bottom in Wolf Lake. At Indian there was a giant cold spring waterfall and I remember nearly blacking out when I stood under it on a hot day... My Dad was a Provost Sergeant and had been in the Second World War and the Korean war and was only really a fun person back in the trees, so I really enjoyed the many fishing trips.

Usually when the whole lake temp is close to the same everywhere in the spring they go shallow, that's why spring is great for shore casting. Try smaller little Cleo and shallow diving stick baits. Use your electric motor to keep quiet

Sure brought back some memories...we had a 17 ft cedarstrip and an 18 Evinrude and we would put in at the Engineers Dock and would be at the Short Turn from supper till dark, wet or dry ,cold or hot all summer through the week...We would net some shiners once a week at the ponds near the main gate and keep them in the sink in the basement. We would fish live suckers for Pike and dead ones for Sturgeon. Anchoring in the main current near the deadhead at the last island of the Short Turn using a heavy sinker with a #4 hook with a silver spinner and wire leader and a live minnow jigging on the bottom always let us catch something. Sometimes a Sturgeon would cause us to up anchor and it would pull us all over the river... Dad got one that was over 90 lbs... Remember losing one that I swear had a head the size of a snow shovel. The best trips were the twice a year when we motored the boat to DesJoachim dam and fished the coffer dam and camped out on a sand bar overnight. Filled the bottom of the boat with yellow pickerel and sauger... freezer was always full of fillets. No limit those days. Really big bass were to be had off the tip of the sand bars with a live dew worm... I think we fished nearly every lake and river and stream on the base and the East side of Algonquin between Pembroke and Mattawa. The mouth of the Dumoine was always a productive trip for really big Walleye. Your boat would be ideal for all the Ottawa trips. ..
@NTSAdventures2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing that story. Those were the days I bet. Sturgeon is now permantly closed. I have been fortunate to have caught 2 in my time. Epic catch. Bass are still decent in the River but big ones are usually caught in the fall. I love hearing your memories. I will be fishing the mouth in a few weeks. I hope you share that experience with us as well. Thanks for your support of our channel. Cheers.

@@NTSAdventures always released the Sturgeon as they were not all that good to eat...my opinion...lol The spawning sturgeon were fun as you could grab their tail and go for a ride... second rapids up from the mouth of the Petawawa in early May, the bottom would be covered with big fish...lol
@bobkimmcdonald61712 ай бұрын
Second hook up is a trailering on road safety. Just like safety chains on trailer. Music is a personal choice. Folks that watch your type of videos want to hear the wind & motor sounds, its part of the experience. Enjoyed sharing your adventure.
@NTSAdventures2 ай бұрын
Awesome! Thanks for the information regarding the hook. As for the music, I kind of agree. I'm glad you mentioned it. I have been waiting for some feedback on the matter. It is kinda distracting but sometimes I feel its 'akward' without it. I will make some changes next video. I truly appreciate the comments! Cheers.

Lived at 23 Ypres from 1953 to 1963 growing up on the base.... had a summer job brushing the golf course so I know that spot...We used to spend all summer in the water below the last rapids recovering fishing lures and selling them back to the fishermen... even had fun running the booms at the mouth that were there for the log drives. Extremely large Walleyes to be had in the spring of the year at the Point B each where the Petawawa current flows along the beach and joins the Ottawa. Used to fish for catfish in really fast water behind large boulders using grasshoppers for bait between the bridge and where you were before and after school .. Riverside, Pinecrest and Panet... all gone...lol
