I've seen many (shill) reviews of this lens, since I was considering switching from my Sigma 100-400, mainly due to its size and weight, plus the half-macro adds a lot of versatility. Most of the in-depth reviews point out that at 50mm the edges are rather soft, however on your pictures, they are fine - I think this has to do with the longer distance (test charts vs mountain) and the non planar subject of yours. What I appreciate about your review though (which is quite unique sadly) is that you make it obvious that this level of stabilization doesn't make much sense. It barely exists for photo, and it is unacceptable for video (in my opinion).

Hey Kemper, awesome recommendation on pairing the two F4 lenses together for landscape photography! I have an interest in panoramas but have noticed you shoot without rotating along the nodal point, is there a post production workflow that corrects for that?
@summitbid
@summitbid 24 күн бұрын
Honestly I have never really had a problem with parallax (what the nodal point corrects for) in my photography. Really you might have an issue if you have a close foreground object in your panorama. That all being said, 75% of my photography is panoramic and I don’t even own nodal rails. Much more important is a leveling base on your tripod. But honestly I got my start just shooting handheld which you actually do most of the leveling and rotating with your body.

Thanks for your real-world comparison of the differences that matter - field usage and image quality (at least the on-screen images). Decisions - decisions. I have to admit that my experience and reflexes with Nikon menus and buttons will be the tie-breaker. It's nice to not re-think everything when trying to capture a fleeting scene.

Sound logic. If you have Nikon experience I definitely don’t feel like the a7rv offers enough to make the switch. I was the opposite for a number of years, but now I’m pretty used to both.

Awesome dedication at the end. I climbed Missouri on 06-26-97 solo while there was still a lot of frozen snow on that approach route. It was a lot of fun, and I was equipped with my ice ax, so the steepness took a bit of time but was successful in summiting, but I always packed prepared for most anything. I did descend down around the S/W side which still had snow on it with no distinct trail. By that time the sun had hit the snow, and it was to say the least tough going and a long haul due to falling through the snow up to my waist with each step much of the time all the way around to the saddle between Missouri and Belford. Missouri was my 11th 14er of the 34 that I did eventually climb a total of 13 for 1997.

I had the Nikon Z8/9 - brilliant all-round, wildlife and sports cameras. But in the end they were too big and too heavy for me and it's a shame that the form factor of the Z7II wasn't retained in the Z8. I miss the Z 4/24-120mm. Instead, Sony has the 4/20-70mm and the new 4/70-200mm, lenses that Nikon lacks.

Kukos for hiking into this remote location with all this gear. This video demonstrates a most significant benefit of the Sony A7R5 versus the Nikon Z8 - size and weight. As a mountaineer, there is simply no justification to cart an extra ounce into the backcountry - let alone the 1/2 lb. weight difference and bulk between the two bodies. Also, generally, lens choices for Sony are a bit lighter too. All other differences are trivial in comparison. ps-the A7R5 plus the Tamron 28-200 are the awesome, backcountry combo.

Wanted to ask a follow up question. For each manufacturer like Sony, Canon, and Nikon could you possible pick the lenses for a good landscape kit? For instance do you favor mostly zooms for flexibility, f/4 for smaller lighter? I.e For Sony would it be the f/4 or f/2.8 holy trinity like the 16-35/2.8 GM II, 24-70/2.8 GM II, 70-200/2.8 GM II, and 100-400 GM or the f/4 equivalents for example? I have lots of primes but see very few landscape photographers using them on a regular basis, you only had two (that I do own) on your list. I have typically built my kits for events and portraits but I want to focus on landscapes. Take care.

Nice video and tribute to your granddad. And great shots with that Leica, the landscapes your brother took had that “Leica glow”. Keep putting it to good use! I had several film and digital Leicas. Outstanding cameras, and the lenses are world class. I have a Digilux 3 with a Summilux 25mm (50mm equiv) and its image quality is incredible for an 17-18 yo camera. People say the “PanaLeicas” are just rebranded Panasonics but it’s not completely true. The color science tech in Leica cameras is all Leica, not Panasonic. The “PanaLeica” lenses are built in Japan to Leica specs and QC and are branded Leica lenses.

A7r5 is the best camera in the market even flagship like Sony a1 not as good as r5! I owned a1 just sold out few days ago and keep r5. Overall the files of raw is just blowing quality of the colours, WB sharpness it’s just amazing. I think this is a the best job Sony did so far. There is no point between 24-50mp. I think you you want to decide so just take 24mp camera or 60mp like r5. A1 is fast but the files is not worse it the price.l! Especially when I compare in to ISO I was surprised how r5 handle with it a1 it’s just disappointed me. Video: yes a1 great on it. Most of the time my a1 was in the bag. r5 easier to use, amazing display, autofocus better then a1 files 200% better then a1. I hope my comment will help you anyone who still didn’t decided.

Thank you fore sharing this. As a Canon, Sony, brief Nikon Z owner/user I have used all of these with the exception of the long Nikkor 80-400. So a follow up question. Your clear that the Sony A7RV is your current landscape camera for Sony, which I also own. What bodies would you recommend for Nikon and Canon? I also own a EOS R5 and use my current RF L mount lenses there. For Nikon, if I bought a body , I would start by adapting GM/GMII lenses but would consider rebuying the Z 14-24/2.8 and the Z 24-70/2.8. So help by providing your answers. Take care.

For Nikon, either the z8 or z7ii are great landscape cameras. The z8 has more features but the z7ii easily gets you 80-90% there. For canon it’s pretty much the r5 that you already have. The r5ii is coming soon but I doubt it really adds much for landscape shooting. That all being said I have stuck with the a7rV for now. It really balances all the features I need with a relatively small body. I also feel like the sensor is superior to canon and Nikon. Not just the mega pixels but the dynamic range as well. The more I have used it, the better I like it. I wish the Sony 100-400 better but the 70-200 GM II is SO good I’m not really complaining.

@@summitbidSo for Sony, Canon, and Nikon, are you able choose a two or three lens kit for each brand that you might suggest to get. I.e. for Sony: the 16-35/2.8 GM, 70-200/4 G II, and 24/1.4 GM and for Canon two lenses beside the RF 100-500mm? Really interested in what you actually go out into the field with. Thank for time.

Thanks for the video. Like you I’ve owned every A7Rx up to an including the RV. Also got an A7CR to compliment it and lighter for travel. I also do shoot Canon but my EOS R5 is not 61 Mpixels so the A7RV is my landscape camera. Putting together a travel kit and wondering if I should get the f/4 70-200mm GII. Macro to add to it. Already own the GM II version but looking for lighter. I didn’t get to new FE 20-70/4 but instead opted for the new FE 24-50/2.8 Gto keep it small. Also own the FE 24-105/4 which may nit be as sharp but still a great lens. New to your channel and have subscribed so I need to look at your other content. Take care.

The 70-200 f4 is a great lens but is not as good as 70-200 GM II. The smaller size is nice but the gmii is actually not that much heavier (~300 grams is all) and the boost in IQ is more than worth it to me.

I really wish your brother would have reviewed this camera. For the simple fact that all cameras are just tools, no matter how new and stacked or old and limited. Knowing the tool, its limitations, helps the user better understand the space in which to use it. Your brother seemed to really understand it and appreciated what it has, and paid far less attention to what it does not have. I'm certain this camera today in 2024 can still produce great photos. Your brother demonstrated how to get it to work with you, not against. You seem to think that 10 megapixels designed in partnership w/ Panasonic Lumix, with a Leica 35-420mm f2.8 - f3.7 Vario-Elmarit lense and Leica processor (color science) is not worth $200? Are we talking about the same manufacturers? Leica and Panasonic/Lumix have produced some of the best cameras and lenses in the space. So, respectively, I am going to disagree. Thanks for posting.
