The leaves look too mushy for me to use it on landscapes. I'll stick with telephoto lens for landscapes.I need sharpness as far as long possible.

Though I don’t own one (yet), I was particularly interested in the Z8 setup section.

Hi Kemper, Thank you for your thoughtful and informative review of this great lens! As a landscape, product and wildlife photographer, I currently use the Z8 with the Nikkor Z 180-600 f/5.6-6.3, with pretty good results. However, based on your comments and some research, aside from my initial thought of superior sharpness of the 100-400, my other reason for wanting to trade the 180-600 towards the 100-400, is simply that it is quite a bit easier to handhold in the field (when not using a tripod or monopod). I recently borrowed it from a friend who has both lenses, and I was impressed by the ergonomics and relative ease of handholding (and still having the option to shoot in DX mode, bringing the equivalent focal length (at 400) to close to 600mm.) Not to mention the ability to shoot at a lower ISO at 400, permitting better results if cropping is required. So, have you ever done a comparison between these 2 fantastic lenses? Thank you, and Happy Holidays!

Honestly I’m happy enough with my 100-400 that I haven’t tried the 180-600. It did take me several tries to get a copy of 100-400 I liked though, so if you do pull the trigger make sure it’s from a retailer you can return to if it’s not the best copy.

I am watching this in December 2024 and I realize that this review is a year old. Sale prices for the Z7ii are $1,999 which appear to be a deal and maybe more bang for your buck than a Z8. At this price is the Z7ii actually better?

Amazing review comparison. I'm a Nikon user. However Nikons lens selection is pathetic. I held a Sony A7R1 in my hand years ago and thought it felt horrible. Nikons feel so good in your hand all day long. However Sony technology is so far ahead now, its time to switch. Ibeas only worried about DR and this video proves even 61 MP sensors can have great DR. Not too worried about color science as i only shoot raw and edit. Thanks again for the great review comparison.

I have this lens and like it so far. Mainly for good light. You are not the only person to mention the VC as a weakness. I was wondering if it conflicts with Sonys in body IBIS? Have you tried just using the Sony IBIS without the lens VC? Or the lens VC with no Camera Body IBIS?

Muchas gracias.

The A7R5 stands out as my top choice for several reasons. Its exceptional image quality ensures sharp, vibrant photos with outstanding detail, making it suitable for everything from professional shoots to personal projects. Beyond the camera itself, the variety of lenses available is unmatched. Sony offers an extensive range of native lenses, but the real advantage comes from the availability of third-party options, giving photographers access to even more choices. This means that regardless of your specific needs-whether you're into landscapes, portraits, wildlife, or videography-you’ll find lenses tailored to your style. Another key benefit is the flexibility in price. Both Sony and third-party manufacturers provide lenses at various price points, making it easier to build a versatile kit without breaking the bank. Let's face it: not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on high-end equipment, and the A7R5 ecosystem acknowledges that by catering to photographers of all levels and budgets. Whether you’re a beginner looking to upgrade or a seasoned pro seeking specialized lenses, the A7R5 offers options to suit your needs and financial situation.

Megapixels… way overrated… ever wonder why Canon hasn’t really exceeded 50MP with full frame cameras? Diffraction. Doesn’t matter how sharp your lens is, or how much resolution it throws down, you can’t escape physics. The more you stop down to get a deeper depth of field, the more diffraction eats your fine detail. The more you open the aperture up to get less diffraction, the less is actually in focus. 45-60MP on a full frame camera is about the sweet spot. More than that and diffraction is already in full effect by f/8. I don’t know about you, but I shoot at f/8 to f/16 all the time. More resolution is not helpful.

Great video! I’m thinking about picking this kit up for shooting mountain sports. So, I have similar landscape requirements but with the added challenge of high speed action. Currently, I am using an A7C with a Tamron 28-200. However, I’m thinking about swapping out for an A9i and these two lenses to get up 20 FPS and 20mm focal length. Do you think this two lens kit with the A9 is light enough for backcountry mountain sports and fast enough at f4 to make it a good set up for capturing backcountry skiing and mountain biking? *the A9 is limited to 15 FPS with third party lenses.
@summitbid3 ай бұрын
I think that would be light enough! Honestly I think you will love that set up! I used the A9 1 and it was maybe my favorite overall experience with a Sony camera

Kemper, really appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. I can't tell you the number of times I've watch different sections of it over and over as I continue to learn and grow in my photography journey. I had a quick question for you - do you need the long lens head to get the L mount to attach to the tripod or will the L mount attach to the tripod without it? I noticed that the long lens head is a bit on the pricier side. Trying to prioritize what all I can buy and was wondering if the lens head can be a later purchase

Thanks so much for watching and the support! So you can use the L Bracket on any arca Swiss compatible tripod head. I have found that the heads Leofoto makes are all very high quality and are not as expensive. They are also readily available on Amazon

And with the advent of some pretty amazing AI upscaling software, you can take a lower megapixel image that’s already good to begin with, and make it that much larger, especially if you hit the focus accurately for the shot.

Great voice/eye contact! 2 Questions; What is pixel peeping? Can anyone really see a pixel? And, What is a panorama photo?...is it a setting on the camera? or a video of and landscape?

My "vibration reduction mode" is off. It won't allow me to change it due to current settings. I'm following your recommendations.
@dixinggao71782 ай бұрын
Are you using an older lens with no EXIF reporting? The camera needs to know a bit about your lens before it can do IBIS (specifically focal length). If that's the case, go to Menu->Setup->Non-CPU lens data, and put in the relevant information.

I've seen many (shill) reviews of this lens, since I was considering switching from my Sigma 100-400, mainly due to its size and weight, plus the half-macro adds a lot of versatility. Most of the in-depth reviews point out that at 50mm the edges are rather soft, however on your pictures, they are fine - I think this has to do with the longer distance (test charts vs mountain) and the non planar subject of yours. What I appreciate about your review though (which is quite unique sadly) is that you make it obvious that this level of stabilization doesn't make much sense. It barely exists for photo, and it is unacceptable for video (in my opinion).

Hey Kemper, awesome recommendation on pairing the two F4 lenses together for landscape photography! I have an interest in panoramas but have noticed you shoot without rotating along the nodal point, is there a post production workflow that corrects for that?
@summitbid5 ай бұрын
Honestly I have never really had a problem with parallax (what the nodal point corrects for) in my photography. Really you might have an issue if you have a close foreground object in your panorama. That all being said, 75% of my photography is panoramic and I don’t even own nodal rails. Much more important is a leveling base on your tripod. But honestly I got my start just shooting handheld which you actually do most of the leveling and rotating with your body.

Thanks for your real-world comparison of the differences that matter - field usage and image quality (at least the on-screen images). Decisions - decisions. I have to admit that my experience and reflexes with Nikon menus and buttons will be the tie-breaker. It's nice to not re-think everything when trying to capture a fleeting scene.
@summitbid5 ай бұрын
Sound logic. If you have Nikon experience I definitely don’t feel like the a7rv offers enough to make the switch. I was the opposite for a number of years, but now I’m pretty used to both.
