I know I already posted but why not use a Master System or Genesis controller for both machines? That way you can really concentrate on performance rather than horridly outdated control schemes. Addendum- You need to play the Master System port of Choplifter!

Yeah I thought about using the SMS controller on both. But by the time the light bulb went on in my head, I was already well past the halfway point of recording, and I really didn't want to record all that again. Oh yeah, I've played it on the SMS. It's a fun game, alot like the arcade version.

Damnit, Sega! You had one opportunity to win this match up with a clean sweep, but you failed me again. The SG1000 games should be running in 4KUHD w/ray tracing enabled on the Master System. I'm pretty sure its 16KB of video RAM should be more than enough. ;) Addendum- In all seriousness, while they both may have the same hardware...the Colecovision looks so much cooler (case). The SG1000 looks very cheap in comparison to the Colecovision, Sega Mark 2, Sega Mark 3, and Master System. Have you ever seen a Mark 3 with the Master System's color scheme? Incredible. I wish Sega would have done that.

🤣🤣🤣 Yeah I'd agree, the build quality of the SG-1000 is kinda cheap. I think they took some design ques from the famicom. Which in my opinion looks toyish. By the time they made the Mark II, I think Sega realized it and made the system with a better design and materials. I do like the way the Mark II and III look, almost like they were trying to make it look more like the ColecoVision. Not quite, but almost.

It's not even close. The ColecoVision library is significantly larger with many Nintendo titles. Additionally, it offers more peripherals, including the roller controller, steering wheel, Super Action Controller, Adam computer, and an expansion module to play Atari 2600 games. Almost every SG-1000 game has been ported to the ColecoVision. Moreover, there's now a device called the Chameleon that allows SG-1000 games to be played directly on the ColecoVision, much like the Atari expansion module.
@RetrogamerGenX

The Coleco's expandabilty is unquestioned. One of the few game consoles that used it's expansion ports to it's fullest potential. The Super Game Module is yet another must have if you own a Colecovision. When you said Chameleon, I instantly pictured that failed Coleco console in the Atari Jaguar shell a few years back. 🤣 Doesn't it support like four systems on the Coleco? SG-1000 and Creativision, but I can't remeber the rest. Yeah, it's a cool product.

I checked the manual for SG-1000 H.E.R.O., and there's no explanation of what the acronym is supposed to stand for there. I wouldn't be surprised if Sega didn't actually realize it WAS an acronym. The thing you're using to fly is referred to as a "rocket pack" though.

@RetrogamerGenX

True. There is a difference between the SMS's custom 315-5124 VDP and the TMS9918 VDP the SG-1000 used. The bit values for the color are read in different memory locations, giving it a different color palette. For instance, to call for the color Green#2, it would be at VRAM location $02 on the SG-1000, but on the SMS at CRAM location $02, it's a dark blue/purple color. So the way a SG game is coded, it would call the wrong color on the SMS. Great point my friend.

You do realize that Sega has always been an East meets West company. American money using Japanese labor to make games for American soldiers stationed in Japanese basis. Corporately they were American until around 1983 when Paramount Pictures sold them to Japanese investors. That's why Sega always seems to fail in Japan because they're always viewed as the outsider during the SG-1000 Master System, and Genesis eras. It took Sega of Japan messing around with Sega of America during the later end of the Genesis era and the Saturn era for them to gain their Japanese street cred. That's the reason why he was never released America because Sega assumed the Colecovision would be their main system for Sega releases in America.
@RetrogamerGenX
@RetrogamerGenX 4 күн бұрын
Yes sir good ol' Service Games. Sega was founded by Americans making slot machines until they were outlawed on bases. Then they switched to distributing games from Midway, and others. Then they started making their own electromechanical games in the late 60's, when they were acquired by Gulf &Western, which had recently acquired Paramount and Desi Lou Studios. They started making video games for the arcade in the 70's which led to them making the sc3000 computer which developed into the sg-1000. Right around that time Gulf & Western divested in Sega and Hayao Nakayama took over Sega bringing it to Japan. Gulf & Western then became Paramount Communications in the late 80's.

I wonder how your impressions would change if you had a real SG-1000 to play on? Considering a lot of the Coleco comments are about the controls, you have to remember the SG-1000 controller looks a lot more like a Coleco stick than a Genesis pad. The SG-1000 has notoriously bad controllers too. But the Mark II used a gamepad very similar to the SMS. This is why on the games I could swap out controllers, I did on the Coleco, to make it even with the SMS joypad I was using (which I think isn't very good either. lol) But the Choplifter game was just bad with any controller. I tried the regular coleco controller, the super action controller, an Atari controller (yeah just one button to test), the SMS controller, and my Wico command stick. None of them made the directional controls on Choplifter better. They just did something in the programming to make them too sensitive. I don't think I really complained about controls in the other games, did I? Well besides in the blooper reel..lol Thanks for watching and dropping a comment brother!!

Keep in mind that with digital control of a joystick 🕹️ (or gamepad) it comes down a lot to the game’s code response to inputs. It’s on or off. Okay maybe a Wico CommandControl bat handle might improve response to finding that on/off point and giving some taps to -just- move a few pixels. 🤷‍♂️ More evidence that Atari was on to something with the analog 5200 joysticks… just that the implementation left a lot to be desired. Disclaimer: I played Miner 2049er on my 5200 with Wico’s joystick for the 5200 (looks more or less just like their IBM PC joystick)

Regarding the hardware similarities: I recall reading that the ColecoVision was constructed using off-the-shelf components, meaning none of its parts were proprietary or subject to copyright restrictions. Yeah it was all constructed from pretty much off the shelf parts. In fact, Coleco sent Sega ColecoVisions so that they could develop their games for it like Zaxxon, and Star Trek. Sega was so impressed with the system. They decided to make one of their own which that technology became the sc3000 computer that Sega made in Japan. Which developed into the sg1000 game console. Pretty cool history. But as far as the Coleco and sg1000, yeah they're definitely siblings very very much alike.

When I was a kid, an elementary school classmate & a friend of mine got his 65XE (in summer of 1986) with a bunch of games, some on cartridges (I remember Star Raiders and E.T. Phone Home), but most of them on floppy disks (he got the matching XF551 as well). We had a lot of fun playing them and we copied some titles for each other, which was quite the standard practice at the time. Then, some two years later he 1:1 exchanged his 65XE for "bare" XEGS with lots of cartridges, as he somehow didn't think of all the games, that required keyboard - which of course caught up with him shortly afterwards. He said to me he was not happy, as he could not play Star Raiders and Druid, two of his most favourite games (and mine too). Unfortunately, the keyboard could not be purchased separately (at least here). But even worse, within a period of a single year, it had to go thrice into a repair shop to get fixed. Once it was the faulty power brick, which fried the CPU and RAM chips, but the other two times it was the faulty soldering. Yeah, it could be felt the XEGS was made as cheap as possible. Even in retrospect, I would always rather go for a fully fledged Atari 8-bit home computer - the price difference was not that big, but the reliability of earlier computers (400/800 and the XL line) as well as the convenience of having a smaller "box" sit on a desk would be the deciding factors. To say so, XEGS was not bad per se - it just came way too late (truly, like an afterthought), utilized mostly a library of 7+ year old games (on a HW from late 70's) and as such, brought nothing really new to the table. Had it been released in let's say 1982 (as +/- all the HW was right there since 1979), it may have been a success, in great part thanks to big, already existing and yet still growing library of games for Atari home computers. And had they implemented e.g. dual POKEY chips for stereo sound with separate stereo audio output and ideally, two more extra ports for analogue joysticks (and made these good & durable) - and most importantly, started re-releasing both existing and new GOOD games supporting & utilizing these new features.. I think the history of atari would have been different.

@@RetrogamerGenX Yeah, I can understand that perfectly - a lot of my co-workers from 2000's were from the US and most of them either had NES consoles in the 80's - either they were kids, or bought them for their kids. But all of them said more or less unanymously, that it was THE perfect and cheap way to play games - it had a good controller (I beg to differ in that opinion), excellent graphics and sound for the time, easy installation in the living room, easy cartridge swapping - and most importantly, a HUGE library of (at least) GOOD games, some considered masterpieces (like Castlevania, Super Mario bros, Duck Tales, Mega Man, Contra, etc..). I also understand, that NES and SEGA borught in not just a new wave of games, but most importantly, new game types (various RPGs, adventures, platformers, beat 'em ups, shooters with story, etc..), and all these in big numbers. It definitely must have had a huge appeal to audiences, because before these, there was very little to nothing similar to it. And all that while "good old Atari" was mentally stuck in the past, re-releasing arcade-ports titles over and over again. BTW I'm smart in retrospect here, as I never owned a gaming console - besides one made in USSR handheld ("Nu Pogodi", a wolf collecting eggs from top & bottom right & left) and later, when it could have already been considered "retro", I was given a Pong machine, a made in Netherlands one (which turned out to be surprisingly fun, when played by two players).

I'm a millennial and my friends are millennials and Gen X and we're the ones buying the Analogue consoles to play these systems on HD TV's. Some of us buy the systems without having any games/controllers as a way to try to experience them in a more modern way. Everdrives and Summer Carts are pretty cheap. But as far as marketing to Gen z, I have a gen z kid and he owns like three analogues so I can kind of confirm that. I'm not saying that millennials and gen xers wouldn't buy it cuz obviously they're in the market as well. But for my son it was a no-brainer. He wanted something he could attach to his HDMI TV and still play the old games without having to buy something like the Retro tink. While somebody like me that collects old consoles and computers, the only way I would buy one of these analog systems is if I couldn't find the real system or I have the real system and it's complete in box, and I don't want to use it. True there are a few games that won't load. But with a 98.9% compatibility, I'd say it's pretty darn close. That's better than the PS1 compatibility on a PS2 which is at only 98%. Nothing will be truly 100% backwards compatible unless you are running the actual hardware on the board. This is why the Atari 7800 is fully compatible with 2600. It has all the 2600 hardware on the board. I spoke the Bil Herd awhile back. He said it has to do with the loading of the software and some c64 software goes in 2mhz mode while trying to load, freezing the system.

@@RetrogamerGenX I think Robin Harbron (8Bit Show and Tell) has made an episode on this issue.

Master system wins, didn’t even have to watch it to figure that one out lol they’re not even comparable, Sega is on another level.

I knew about the 7800 back then. All of us kids that had Segas and Nintendos used to make fun of it. Like, Really Atari is still making consoles. Lol. Many years later I got a 7800 and found it to be ok. But really it's just an upgraded/ tricked out 2600 is how I feel. But I guess you could say the same thing about the SMS, an upgraded, tricked out SG-1000. 🤣🤣

Master System was one of the most underrated systems ever released in the US. If it had the NES library, it wouldn’t have been close.

I had both. I'd pick Sega but i loved those Atari controllers. They were a big upgrade from the 2600. I miss both systems

Yeah everything was about cost cutting at Atari at that time. Plus with Jack taking over they were focusing more on computers than on game consoles.
