That is an excellent explanation of how this balancer works. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain it. I was hoping that the board had some means by which it would shut itself off when the balance was within specification, but that may be wishful thinking. I would like to leave the balancer connected with the BMS, but I was hoping it go to sleep when not needed.

Could you have used a B&W sensor and a color filter wheel in front of the camera to take 3 exposures/frame and then merge them later on? For the alignment maybe leave a gap in the wheel so that only a B&W image is captured for the sprocket detection and when aligned capture R, G & B frames.

Hey Stuart, love your work! I'm currently in the process of building a LiFePO4 pack from CALB cells. I was thinking about using your diyBMS system for controller/managing the cells. However, I didn't want dangling off the side controllers for each pack. (Currently only 1P, expanding later). It was suggested I could potentially use the Leaf monitors to connect to the top of the cell. I also didn't want to run a bunch of balancing wires. Will these still work with the V4.90 board/firmware? Is there another design you would recommend? Thanks

What if a boost converter or jewl thief is used to charge the capacitor or the low cell? If the capacitor is charged to 4.5-5v or even a capacitor doubler, charge two capacitors then put them in series to charge a cell. Its going to cost space and components, maybe it is worth it if it can work Soo much better, having a boost converter or jewel thief making noise may not be so acceptable. However a fet switching caps in series should be much more welcome.. possibly use a small micro controller to discharge the cap before connecting the call to charge it , so the high cell charges it faster. Then going in series as it connects to the low cell. I wish i had more knowledge about electronics, i could have started learning 30-35 years ago and know a ton more! Thank you soo much for all the effort , and for sharing this awesome project!

Hey Stuart very nice update on the new boards. Amazing job on the instruction video as well. DIYBMS has got to be the most affordable and most feature rich BMS out there period and its all open source and open hardware to boot. Do you think you can add external AC CAN charging support. The most affordable and powerful one I can find is the TC Charger for 48v systems. tccharger-3.3kw-hk-mf-48-40-obc Would be nice for DIYBMS to have external AC CAN charging support. You can contact them for the protocol this is the official unit and its on its 4th generation

Stuart, this might be a really dumb question, but I can't find the DC input voltage range for the 4.90 monitoring board listed anywhere. Is it 5V like the controller? Also, is there a place where data-sheet like information for these boards exists? Thanks in advance, you've done an awesome job with this project and the videos are all super helpful.
@StuartPittawayАй бұрын
Sorry, documentation isn't really available for the DIYBMS (its on the long to-do list!) However, the 4.90 board is powered directly from the battery - it will accept up to 65V (max).

I love your project and I am looking for something similar that would support my project and allow direct monitoring of each individual cell. It looks like this board requires a minimum of 8S. I am still digging through all your GitHub files but do you have something that may work with my project?

Hello, I know that we can add a CurrentShant.. but we can limit a current separate on charge and discharge or disable one of them ? I think DiyBMS is like MultiVoltmeter with addons as core system. This is critical for me when I think about doing HV system base on DiyBMS (192V for APC UPS).

I wait until 'OffGrid Garage' do a testing of your boards, after ppl will go for DiyBMS more oftern. For me best pro of DiyBMS is that with >4 of them we can switch from LV 48V into 192V who can replace a AGM battery pack in many UPS device and this is often first low level to onter HV PV Inverters. Many persons who have a car battery with broke internal BMS can use DiyBMS to reuse a battery and communicate with inverter . This is one of best pros of DiyBMS for me.

What's the practical difference between the flying capacitor type (show in video) and the inductive type (the tiny type with inductors)? Is there any real reason to use one over then other? I know sort of the difference of using inductance vs capacitance, one uses capacitors, one uses the back EMF from inductors and changing currents like a buck or boost converter. But I don't know why you'd use one system over the other for an active balancer.

@StuartPittaway Just purchased the 4.61 Controller was planning on using it with a 96s Lifepo4 system. I just watched this video and reading the comments, I thought the controller wasn't limited by voltage but in away it is because the shunt is only capable of 85v.. I'm not sure what to do now, I thought this BMS was my solution.. Is there a way that I can incorporate something like the VISHAY HV-IBSS-USB shunt? This thing is pretty awesome, up to 850v.

What is the power consumption of the boards? I was thinking of doing the individual monitors, but the more I think about it, it's likely that this new 16s board uses less.
@StuartPittaway3 ай бұрын
The individual boards are very efficient in power requirements, the CPU is put to sleep between each request so consumes very little current. The 16S board is always powered up and running, but still only consumes 20 or 30mA - hardly anything in the scheme of a large battery setup.
