Agree with you fully, safety is never to be overlooked and have always regarded a revolver with the hammer resting on and empty chamber a good and safe option, but saying that when I have had to carry a pistol 40 years ago it was the browning, because of the threat of that situation the SOP's were, 1 in the chamber at all times but with the hammer down, so it could be presented quickly without racking the slide, we were never permitted to carry them cocked and locked.

I don’t even carry a gun. I just carry a knife, and keep the handle and blade separate. That way I don’t have to worry about accidentally stabbing myself, and it’s really easy to just affix the blade whenever trouble comes up. If you aren’t comfortable carrying with one in the chamber, you lack training and/or the right firearm for you. I carry both semiautomatics and revolvers, but favor the revolvers whenever the situation shouldn’t require more capacity.

It’s not about, “takes longer” it’s about your ability to do fine motor manipulations under extreme duress or from a disadvantaged position. That serious issue is compounded by the wasted time. You can short cycle the slide, a round can get hung up, you can induce a malfunction during that manipulation. IMHO if you’re not comfortable you should buy a pistol with a manual safety that’s easy to disengage like the P365’s or get a revolver. It’s even harder carrying condition 3 and attempting to draw from that terrible pocket position AND rack the slide in a confined space under stress. Food for thought, while we’re on the subject of food…lose the weight. I feel ok saying this as a fellow chubby man who has lost and continues to lose a lot of weight in part because AIWB is very clearly the most versatile and capable carry position.

Ha! I commented on one of your earlier videos recommending that you should consider getting a Ruger SP-101, and watching this one, apparently you had one at the time you made that video! I have the very model you describe here, 3” barrel and .357 Magnum. I don’t know if you went hammerless on that one too - like you did with the Charter Arms Off Duty - but I went with the standard DA/SA configuration. I switched out the polymer grip inserts for a set of wooden ones and replaced the black front sight blade with a Meprolight tritium front sight, but otherwise left it alone. Yeah, I could see why you would regret selling that one; I just love mine and it is my favorite revolver of those I own. I frequently pocket carry mine in a custom-made leather holster from Palmetto Leather Company, whom I highly recommend if you’re in the market for any sort of leather handgun holster. I also have an OWB rig for it as well if I want to carry it that way under a sport coat. I’ve also got two firearm purchase regrets, and one “wish I hadn’t sold it” regret. Purchase regrets: - Century Arms C39v2 “Zhukov” AK platform. I got an early production example that, thanks to lack of adequate prior research on my part (Sound familiar?), I discovered was really not up to snuff on the quality of key internal parts. I spent quite a lot of money trying to address those issues, and finally managed to turn it into a satisfactorily serviceable rifle, but in hindsight if I had done my due diligence with prior research and also saved up a bit more money for something better to begin with, I’d have saved a lot of subsequent expense and headaches. I still have it and it is now a decent shooter, but it was a long and costly road to get there. - Zastava M57A Tokarev pistol, chambered in 7.62x25mm Tokarev. Bought it kind of on a whim while watching an historical documentary series on the Eastern Front in WW2, thinking it would be cool to have a modern build version of the iconic Soviet sidearm of that time. It wasn’t that expensive and it seemed well made, but I had chronic reliability issues with it. It wasn’t a “jamomatic”, it worked “most” of the time, but damned if I couldn’t get through 100 consecutive rounds without at least one or two or three stovepipe jams. It went to my gunsmith, it went to Zastava’s service center, and to make a long story short, it turned out that there almost certainly wasn’t anything wrong with the pistol to begin with. It was the ammo I was using, PPU (that’s why I will never buy any more of their ammo). I figured at the time, “Serbian pistol, Serbian ammo, must be made for each other!”, right? But no, PPU has serious problems with QA/consistency. By the time my rigamarole with that pistol was done, I had a new barrel and slide, but now a “Frankengun” of mismatched parts such that I can’t count on the slide to lock back on the last round, and I also have some funky mag issues. I still have it and I still intend to shoot it now and again, but it is strictly a range gun and historical curio and that is it. The ammo for it is all imported, relatively expensive, and sometimes hard to find. I may yet sell it, though I would probably wind up taking a steep loss if I did. Gun I regret selling: - I’ve only sold one gun out of all the guns I’ve ever bought, and that was the very first handgun I ever bought, which was a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Magnum six shot single action only revolver, with a 7 1/2” barrel, blued finish with wooden grips. At the time I sold it, I didn’t have much money, and I really wanted a S&W 686 6” barrel .357 Magnum (which I have to this day), so I sold the Ruger to help finance the S&W. But that Ruger would still be a cool gun to have around today, though it would be a bit expensive to shoot. I hope it’s in good hands now, wherever it is.
@wheelguns4wheelmen802
@wheelguns4wheelmen802 2 ай бұрын
I too would regret selling a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 Mag. Those are sweet. And yea my SP101 was a tank. I had DA/SA. And Century Arms is an importer so it really depends on what you are buying, but most of their AK products are not worth the risk. I’m liking my new CA-3 G3 rifle (it is G3 FCG and bolt and furniture with a new PTR barrel and receiver) though. And I was tempted to get one of those Tokarev pistols made by Zastava but they aren’t great investments, like you noted, and I think I’d rather have a standard Russian one.
@TheRobman139
@TheRobman139 2 ай бұрын
Good straightforward video. Couple of observations: First, I thought it was neat how you showed that the hammerless design allowed for a more controllable grip. I never knew that and it now makes me consider the possibility of acquiring a hammerless revolver at some point in the future. I still like to have that single action option but what you demonstrated definitely got a “Hmmm” out of me. I have one Charter Arms revolver myself, and that is the standard Undercover (not “Lite”) in .38 Special, matte stainless finish, standard rubber grips. I’ve had it two years now as I write this. It isn’t my only carry option but I do carry it fairly often in a simple nylon pocket holster. It’s a very good general purpose “bopping around town” carry gun. I too have experienced occasional light primer strikes using double action with mine; never on single action. This has almost always happened with cheaper brands of range ammo: Norma and Armscor in my case. On one occasion I had a light strike with Underwood defensive ammo, but it went off with a second strike on double action. I have never had a problem with Federal, Winchester, or Remington ammo. My current carry ammo for this gun is Federal “Hydra Shok Deep” 130 grain +P. Yes you could probably eliminate all possibility of a light primer strike with a stronger mainspring, but then you’d have a harder trigger pull. It may not be worth screwing around with. Use quality ammo and you should be just fine. Speaking of which, I am not surprised that you had that problem with PPU. I have had some very bad experiences with them, and without going into detail, I’ll just say here that I simply don’t buy their products anymore, period. I’d stay away from their ammo if I were you (or anyone). One more thing re ammo choices, CA .38 snubbies are +P rated, but the position of CA is that out of a snub nosed 2” barrel, you lose so much powder burn such that the increase in performance compared with standard pressure is negligible and thus the extra wear and tear of +P isn’t justified. In some cases that is true but it depends on the brand. Some brands of .38 Special +P offer significantly greater power than standard pressure, even out of a 2” barrel. Underwood is one of them. I carry Federal +Ps now though, which really aren’t very hot, because I trust them more with respect to primer ignition with this particular revolver. Now, if you want a revolver that will detonate ANYTHING, get yourself a Ruger SP-101. I have one of those, too. It’s a little bigger and heavier (ok, a lot heavier), and it definitely has a stiffer double action trigger pull, but that gun will always go bang with any ammo unless the ammo is grossly defective. I like my CA revolver a lot, though. My only complaints were that it had a couple of cosmetic dings, aesthetically I don’t like the plastic trigger guard/grip frame, and the cylinder release can be a little “sticky” compared with my other revolvers, but otherwise functionally it is an excellent .38 snubbie. As with you, the grips fit my hand perfectly and do a great job of mitigating recoil; it is a fun gun to take to the range, very enjoyable to shoot. I also have found it to be very accurate for a weapon of this type; I have no trouble hitting half-size silhouettes at 25 yards on single action or at 15 yards double action. I won’t win any marksmanship competitions with it but for defensive purposes it is plenty accurate for sure. My comment here is posted a year after your video. How do you like this revolver now? Do you still have it? Is it your EDC?
@wheelguns4wheelmen802
@wheelguns4wheelmen802 2 ай бұрын
So, I carried it for a while, but experienced a few more light primer strikes. Eventually I traded it and an AR for a Beretta 92 series pistol. I am a huge 92 series guy. I agree that PPU does make pretty bad ammo; have had light primer strikes in other guns that have been flawless otherwise. Currently I am carry a Smith & Wesson Lipsey’s Exclusive 632 Ultimate Carry and I love it. It truly is a great snubnose. I also like the .32 H&R mag chambering more than .38 Spl.
