this is great. there are themes, there's structure and form, it's well played with nuances. my only two points of feedback would be to find a way to improve the quality of the recording, either do a direct in if that's a digital piano (it sounds almost like it), or if it's an actual piano, look into different professional mic-ing techniques and ways of reducing reflections in the recording room. either way, some music production skills would be required--which anyone can teach themselves these days. the other point would be, i personally think it's a tad too verbose for my taste; i would prefer a little more space and silence at some points for contrast and this will allow for melodies and individual notes to sing and carry more meaning. but again, this point of feedback starts to move into the territory of subjective art so... 🤷 lastly, don't even give much energy or attention to negative feedback/criticism that has no merit. for some of my videos that might be anywhere from 3-10 min and take me 12-60 hours to create, i might get an occasional negative comment and then see that the person that commented has never uploaded a single video or shown to the online public any creation that required any kind of work, time, or effort whatsoever. often times, the ones who judge have such a narrow view of what is "good" and that's what keeps them from making anything in the first place because the negativity they dish out is what they themselves are afraid of receiving... (or looked at from another perspective: they dish it out because it helps them reinforce and be content with where they're at in life, which unfortunately could be a mental space of self-sabotaging without knowing)

I must say I’m in shock at some of the negative comments here, hopefully they’re not genuine but kudos to you for accepting them so graciously all the same. This is, however, a remarkably well-written, intelligent, and authentic piece. In particular the blending of styles (that is the combination of the locrian and pentatonic motifs with more traditional harmonic elements) is done very effectively. Certainly there are not many writing at this level on KZbin. Kudos to you also for playing your own compositions, and so well. I am very much looking forward to the third movement. @@fruisen9436 Thx for your compliments! I think for every art works, if this one qualified to be called one, will always have audience who likes it or doesn’t like it, even if you are as great as Bach or Beethoven, so it’s always great to receive negative comments as well. I definitely put my honesty in the piece. The use of different scales is to counterbalance the monotony of the minor scale in the first movement. I recently grow my interest in writing with pentatonics and it sounds quite good here for my own biased opinion! This movement is quite hard to play as well. Sometimes the pianist me has to decipher what the composer me was doing and the process was quite interesting! The 3rd movement would need much polishing, and it’s really difficult to play, so it may take quite some time for it! What an excellent performance and composition! The themes are very clear, and I especially love 3:40 where you introduce absolutely gorgeous counterpoint! @@henryng0725 I understand that honest feedback can sometimes be difficult to accept, especially when it feels critical. The reality is that classical music has its own audience, and every piece resonates differently with listeners. That said, I felt this particular piece was lacking in impact, though it definitely serves its purpose for self-entertainment. If the comment section is meant for appreciation only, it might be worth considering making it private. I see music as a unique language that can deeply resonate with our emotions. Some compositions touch the heart like poetry, while others may struggle to convey their intent. Unfortunately, this piece seems to fall into the latter category for me. This short piece sounds really fun and cool to play! Parts of it remind me of Chopin's Prelude In Bb Minor and the fast parts of Chopin's Fantasia Impromptu in C# Minor. The repetition of the semiquaver rhythm is more than compensated for by the intriguing articulations, touch and textures, which can make it hard to tell the time but also makes it more dramatic. Very well like an Etude in it's own right. m 97 - 106 - didn't really expect it ( largely the modulation to Db ), but the music does somewhat sound it was heading to that kind dramatic part too. While the change back to C minor sounds expected, the end still also sounds unresolved ( even if on the base tonic )... which is very satisfying!

Hey @AwKeShen, thx for your comment! The inspiration of this movement is the finale of Chopin’s 2nd Sonata where he exclusively uses unisons and a compact sonata form! Yeah I wanna have that sudden Db minor to indicate the real devil of the sonata which is the C sharp minor fourth movement! Henry. I just listened to this long cry from the heart. Yes yes, cry from the heart, like often I've heard from you. Here the apparent austerity of the choice of the runaway is the space of constraint that precisely allows all your sensitivity to emerge. In this sense, I thought a lot about what Schubert does when he uses the fugato in his F fantasy or his quartets (except around the last 7 minutes). The Gothic appearance is then the romantic vision of these cathedrals invaded by wanderings, thoughts, memories, as we visit old abandoned places to sing our pain! Bravo !

My god, what a contrapuntal tour-de-force! That took my breath away! That passage from around 50 almost made me crawl out of my skin, and then it just kept moving farther and farther out into the solar system. That C-major pentatonic passage really took me by surprise, and that wonderful, haunting ending! The analytical information you provided is really helpful (and it's an honor to be counted among your mentors - thank you for that). If I may offer just a couple of purely practical suggestions: There are places where it would be helpful to the 1st violist if you'd transliterate that part to treble clef. You can spot these passages easily; once one is going beyond two ledger lines, it's best to go ahead and change the clef sign. And I think it would make things easier for everyone if you were to lose the three-sharp signature somewhere along the way, when those sharps have to be overridden in order to have music in a different key (e.g. C major - and if you see flat signs in a passage with a sharp-key signature, unless it's a momentary sidestep into the parallel minor, it's best to re-think your strategy). Wonderful work, Henry. I can't wait to hear the entire composition! Do you have prospects for performance?
@henryng0725
@henryng0725 Жыл бұрын
David, thank you so much for your listening and comment!! I am very happy that you love it!! It not makes my day but at least make my week or month!! For the violist treble clef issue, I am sure I overlook it, thx for pointing out! For the key signature issue, e.g. for b.126 I originally thought I would just go back to the 3 sharp key signature after the material really goes back to F sharp minor, but you are right there! I will change it when finalising the score. I should also change to no sharp signature when the music goes to C pentatonic in b.178. Thank you! The analysis is exhausting to make and I even find some entries I miss! But as the composer himself I have the responsibility to make it clearer for what I am doing here! A six part fugue is real difficult to write but if it’s written properly the sound will be much thicker and the emotion stronger than a three or four part fugue, and I am very happy with the result since an definitely use my 200% effort to write it! B.50 is one of my favourite too, and my favourite is b.100 since I think I have never written things this emotional! And the C major pentatonic passage will act as the precursor of going back to the pentatonic later in the movement. For the ending I use the Spanish “Soledad”description since I suddenly thought of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “One Hundred Years of Solitude” there haha. The entire 2nd movement will be in four parts: Lamentoso-Fugue-Chant-Back to pentatonic, so I have just finished one fourth here!! That will be a long long writing distance 😭😭. But even if I finish the whole sextet I don’t see it’s prospects for getting performance, since it’s a Sextet and hard to get string players, and it will be really long, as the two movements will at least be in 40 minutes and I don’t see chances of string groups performing such a long piece!! It will be already great enough for me to just finish the piece, although I do hope one day it will be performed!! Thx so much for taking your time to listen and write such a thoughtful comment. It’s for me such a great encouragement from a person I worship!! Thank you! Henry

Hey Mike, thx for your reply! I also love the dissonance level here haha. The changing to C minor is more to reply to the first movement when there are sections with Gb major and C major alternating, and also kind of creating a Henry Ng Universe here with my Clarinet Quintet theme quoted. The reason to use pentatonic scale at 7:00 is to link it back to the first movement which is dominated by it, and also kind of hint what will follow later in the movement! Henry

Yeah I know that 🤪! But I really love Gb major on this one since it's more philosophically correct than any other more sharp keys which are more usual for string music! And I absolutely love the beautiful sound of viola!! Both its C string and high register are very beautiful!! Thx for your listening!!! Henry

@@henryng0725 Gb major is a great key. Nothing wrong with giving it to strings, because most string players capable of this piece can handle 6 flats/sharps. As for Viola.... I'll have to make some friendly fire. I like the instrument, but there are so few good violists. I think I'm going to leave Viola for cello pretty soon, less because it's a viola, more because it's somehow too small for me (my viola is massive).

@@zephthezquirrellord Funniest thing I have seen from Hindemith’s book is that “If one’s favourite orchestral key is F sharp major one deserves to suffer” LoL! I love all the string instruments but each has their own timbre. Cello is great too! But viola’s high register is very beautiful too, like the one in the transition of 1st movement of Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique!

This actual fire, i love it so much. The juxtaposition of pauses and slightly out of place runs is fantastic. It's super fun to listen to and just feels so right

Thank you! I really did compose this with fire and anger in my heart then, luckily it's expressed in the music and you can feel it!!! And I hope those pauses won't hurt you!! Henry

@@henryng0725 I think the pauses are perfect. They're just long enough to get the effect you want. And, let's be real, if WIM is commenting on your piece, 1) ignore it, because everything he says is BS and he's just a toxic hater of everyone but himself, and 2) it means that your composition has to be really good to get that amount of time devoted in to saying it's not. Keep up the good work, I really like hearing your compositions

I have come upon your channel via a reddit post in r/composer about your newest sonata, and I am very impressed as a fellow composer (and clarinet aficionado). I myself have been working on a sonata for clarinet and piano recently (a much more amateurish work than yours, sadly - you can find the first movement on my channel). Good luck with your musical endeavours!

Wow looks like my friend's strategy works haha! Thank you very much! I actually don't play clarinet myself and I don't know whether it works haha! I have the Clarinet Quintet no.1 which is an hour long 🤮🤮 and you may take a look to that too if you have much much spare time!! Henry
