LOUDNESS PENALTY: ANALYZER, music at 12 luffs is left alone apart from apple, Pandora will turn it up by 6db so you can add 6 luffs. 1luff =1db and the rest says no penalty's imposed. Luffs is more for broadcasting music, so music videos for example will be at 14 luffs , this is so when the adverts come on there is no big jumps in volume like back in the day. As adverts were always turned up to 11 so if you popped to the toilet in the add breaks you still got brain fed bullshit to buy.

Sounds nice. Doesn't the parallel trick around 16:57 achieve the same thing as the mix knob in the plugin?
@Lucassnydermusic29 күн бұрын
Sort of, but using an effect rack gives you much more control. When you use the wet/dry knob in a plugin, it blends the processed and unprocessed signals, but you can’t independently adjust their levels. This limits how precisely you can balance them. By creating an effect rack and adding a separate chain for the processed signal, you’re essentially setting up parallel processing. This allows you to completely separate the dry (unprocessed) and wet (processed) signals. Now, you can fine-tune the level of each chain individually, meaning you can push the saturation, compression, or any other effect as hard as you want, while still maintaining complete control over how much of the original dry signal remains in the mix. This approach provides more flexibility and can lead to a cleaner and more polished sound, as you have greater control over both the effect and the original signal.

Do you set the kick at -8dB and have the drum rack at -12dB as well?
@LucassnydermusicАй бұрын
That was actually a mistake, but it ended up working out. I forgot to reset the gain on the drum rack to 0. As long as the kick is set at a level that leaves head room (which doesn't even really matter anyway, I just prefer that things aren't red lining while mixing or producing) and that you can anchor everything else to, it doesn't matter a whole lot what the fader volume is set at. So the drum rack could be set to -12db and then you just leave the volume of the kick at 0 I think that would work just fine. I used to use xfer Nerve for drums so I got used to that.

@LucassnydermusicАй бұрын
Don’t need one but you’ll need an audio interface if you ever want to use studio monitors or a microphone. Also a headphone amp which routes into an audio interface will help make headphones sound even better. It depends on your headphones impedance as well and how much it takes to power them.
@richardchant7357Ай бұрын
With the ratios you will find that 2 is high, 4 is mid and 10 is low. If you set the ratio to 4, bring the threshold down, look at the peak volume, change the ratio to 10, the peak volume will become louder, which means that the 10 ratio is low. Also, if you set the ratio to 2, set the threshold down to O, and make sure you sound is peaking at 0 before the compressor is on, the signal will be compressed a lot, even though no threshold has been applied. That’s because when setting the ratio to 2 you are activating a knee that’s built in. So, ratio 2 activates the knee and you need to bring the peak down a lot before compression, ratio 4 is the equivalent to a 2.5 ratio on a standard ableton compressor and ratio 10 is significantly lower.
@LucassnydermusicАй бұрын
I think that’s actually the opposite of how it works but thanks for the comment!

@GoldenCruiserCrewАй бұрын
Great explanations thank you!! Regarding drum group compression, do you usually start by compressing and panning each element individually and then add the glue compressor? Or you start with the glue and adjust from there?
@LucassnydermusicАй бұрын
Hey! So I typically don’t do much compression at all to individual drums. If I have to add some more attack to the clap or snare for example, I might use a compressor with a slow attack time like 30 ms or slower which will allow the clap transient to pop through and emphasize it. But generally speaking in edm most sample based drums you can leave alone. I do pan shakers and claps and stuff and then I go to the group and will either compress like I did in the video or I will do parallel compression by putting the glue compressor into an effect rack, adding a chain and then going from there. Edit: I like to work my way up starting on the individual elements. You could start from the group and i guess it would be top down mixing which works too!

Im working in a genre that’s all analog/traditional instruments, and I’ve found that I like to just put a send on every instrument to the same reverb on a track because it sounds more like a band playing in a room where the room reacts to the instruments together as one source of sound rather than a bunch of different sources of reverb colliding into each other. Once I started doing that it was a lot easier to manage the reverb in the mix. I still might send lead vocals to another reverb for effect but for the most part all instruments and vocals hit the same reverb unit at different levels and it sounds more cohesive and it’s a far less complicated mix.
@Lucassnydermusic2 ай бұрын
That’s cool, yeah totally make sense to do that. I’ve made other genres and yeah I like putting a room reverb on drums for example to give it more of that real life sound.

Hey, I have a question! So I had to move my studio back into my bedroom which means back to headphones. I am currently in the process of finding a good pair of closed back headphones as my environment isn't always silent. But besides that, I thought I'd ask for a video suggestion on how to properly process/mix/master vocals for remixes? Specifically extracted already processed vocals? I am aware of all the potential headaches that comes with but there are times it's possible to find a isolated vocal version someone may post on youtube or even the vocal acapella itself that sounds really nice with minimal artifacts to the ear. I have found that there is almost no videos on youtube of edm producers showing their process. I'd like to know the do's and dont's. The process from beginning to end - Gainstaging, Clip Volume adjustment if the waveform is drastically uneven or even just way too low, then onto processing like getting rid of unwanted frequencies usually left behind, how to enhance them with common plug-ins or even abelton stock. I work on a lot of remixes for practice and vocals are just always so tedious to me. Adding effects and vocal chopping techniques is another beast to master, but mainly getting the vocals to sound as clear as possible. How to properly reference them to another track and so on. I also find it very confusing when I get advice from blogs, youtube producers and then others argue against their methods for example: EQing the low end > Soothe > Utility in Mono > fresh air > and so on. Someone had said that mid/side EQ was pointless or using the method of utility in mono wasn't needed. I guess my ears are just not trained well enough to ear for things I'm supposed to. Also reading meters, etc. I'd like to know what to hear for and look for on a spectrum analyzer. The order of plug-ins or the best method. Sorry if this is a lot and all over the place! But I love the way you explain things. I'd say I'm near intermediate advanced with production but vocals whether its a male or female there are different approaches to them. Would greatly appreciate it :)

Do you have a budget in mind for headphones? The only ones that come to mind that I know of that would work well for mixing are the Neumann NDH 20s. I’ve mixed really well on in ear monitors as well, so those could be an option too to be able to drown out outside noise even more. Onto the vocal question. Each scenario is different but if you’re extracting a vocal from a pro track that means it’s already been processed a ton so I’d lean towards basically not doing anything to it at all except for using tools to remove unwanted, weird artifacts. You won’t need to use any compression at all but maybe some delays. I’ll definitely make a video on this and thank you for the idea I think it’s a great ides for sure.
