Peas need 1 inch of water per week, preferably all at once. In the video you stated you water every other day. Most likely you're overwatering and causing "root rot". The plants will yellow from the bottom upward in this case, and usually all at roughly the same time. The other possibility is nitrogen deficiency, but nitrogen is responsible for stem & leaf growth and your plants are quite tall & lush. Pull one of the dead plants and look at the roots. If you see little bulbs on the roots, those are what put nitrogen back into the soil. Cut dead plants at ground level and leave those bulbed roots in the soil, so they can compost for next year's plants. If you don't see bulbs then the plants are dying too soon, thus it's likely root rot. Disease usually will hit random leaves and spread to neighboring plant leaves. Waiting too long to harvest wouldn't likely kill pea plants quickly and all at once, but a single cucumber left too long on the vine will. Always pick when fruits are at medium size to be safe. They also taste much better then too. Also, make sure you add compost every year, at least 1 inch worth per garden bed.

The plants will yellow from the bottom upward in this case, and usually all at roughly the same time. If your plants are short when dying, then it could be nitrogen deficiency as nitrogen is responsible for stem & leaf growth. Disease is not likely unless the yellowing leaves are more random than uniform. If that's the case, the plant cannot be saved and needs to be removed immediately to prevent spreading to neighboring plants.

Oh, I love that you mentioned getting seeds from the library! I just looked it up, and apparently, my library also has a seed catalog that folks can "checkout". Not entirely sure how it works but I'll be going down there this weekend.

So that one potato, where in the bed? Middle or edge? What was the average weight? How long from the first dig did you let me mature?
@Homegardening-480
@Homegardening-480 Жыл бұрын
It was at the very end of the bed, in the middle of the row, where it had more sunlight and near a water emitter. Planted mid April, harvested Sep 4th. These were spaced 12 inches apart otherwise.

What I normally do during the heat of the summer is pick off my suckers and throw them away. But as the summer ends I let a few grow. Take smaller and larger of the variations and propagate those. By end-of-summer I have 5 6 ft tall tomato plants producing again during the cooler fall temps with no need to start from seed.

If you're short on good dirt, can you use wood chips, sawdust, leaves, etc? I'm getting a truckload of wood chips, to use as mulch, is the reason I'm asking. Thanks, so much,

The reason i did mentioned Vermiculite and peat moss, especially where you live, is that Vermiculite is great at retaining moisture, also peat moss but vermiculite aireate the soil, stopping it for getting to compact when it get too dry...just a quick tip..there is still time for you, between crops to add those into your soil...just a quick tip here..sorry if ii made mistake in english..not my first language...

This might help...first for new seeds, you have to use a seed starting mix that is neutral, no fertiliser, the seed has everything she needs until the first sets of 2 real leaves...then you fertilise, still in the seed trays but half the dose....then on repotting, you use potting mix but not to strong with the NPK that you will add in your watering..1-2-1. then increase...I am lucky caus where i live it freezes so i leave my seedling mix bags outside to freeze to kill all bad things and after when i prepare my trays i pour really hot water on the mix...and let it cool before filling my trays...the really hot water will kill and finish all bad bugs...my trays are washed before use, every season, with hot water and some bleach....and then i rince...and if possible..seedling needs at least 16 hours of light and 8 off in pitch dark..they need it, natural and or artificial...and when using artificial, have it close to the plants so they do not get leggy...I know you probably know all this, just wanted to let you know how i do it and it does work every year..i start about 300-to 400 seedling in my basement, Zone 4B, every year for me and to give some.., Best of luck...and i do my own potting mix..and garden soil...1 part of compost, 1 part of peat moss and 1 part of vermiculite..cheaper then perlite where i live and i buy it in big 4 cu. ft. bags..from Perlite Canada...please do buy it in big bag..HD has some..do not buy small Vitagrow or similar brand...bags...way way too expensive...good luck..new sub right here..have a great season..guys

I looked at fertilizer suggestions for Rutabaga and Peas (turnips are in same family as rutabaga I believe). Many are 10-10-10 for both but I saw some for Rutabaga from U Minnesota that say to start with 46-0-0, so maybe nutrient competition. Also, I didn’t look at what the root plants are releasing into the soil

Too much watering is the cause. You need to let them dry water and let them dry again after the germination. Never water too much. You can use %3 hydrogen peroxide for sanitizing of the soil. You can use mancozeb fungicide at the starting.

I've had problems with MiracleGro's Potting Mix and Indoor seed starter mix. Most notably: 1) Insufficient drainage, resulting in root rot in plants requiring good drainage (ex: jalapenos, moringa). I suspect a viable fix would be to blend in some coco coir & pearlite 70:30 mix. 2) High incidence of various fungal diseases, esp fusillium wilt and downey mildew. The soil seems rife with the spores ... i'll probably ditch the brand after I use up what I have left. 3) Ive also had issues with fungal gnats with their regular potting mix. Anyway, if it were me, i'd redo everything with a better draining potting mix blend, and give it a little phosphorous and potassium early on, to help speed root growth. I'd also switch to a better seed starting tray, because those look kinda wide and very shallow, which doesnt leave much room for root growth. Personally, I like the 1.5" air pruning 3x2 plastic cells by Bootstrap Farmer ... I can do 4 seeds per cell, wait til theyre 2" tall, and then separate them by slipping out the whole plug and gently swishing it around in water to rinse away the soil mix - then it's trivial to transplant them. As I type this, ive got about fourty 5" tall seedlings in 18oz Solo cups.

GOOD call on dumping the tomatoes! They would have trouble their entire life! I start my tomatoes indoors, and can have them ready for transplant in 3 weeks! They don't need anything but light until they get their true leaves. Your seeds are leggy as well! WAY to much sunshine for those little guys!!
