Spent many years visiting Hong Kong, but not the same now freedom has been curtailed.

Another absolute banger documentary style vid. Your photos really captured the atmosphere of the locations you visited. Would love to see these in a zine or some sort of print collection. Really beautiful work Chris.

Interesting to see HK from a foreign perspective. People always think they are being original but it’s actually cheesy cliches. And what’s with the Terrible Charlie Chan music.

Your video made my day after work :) Brings me back to 2018 when I was in Hong Kong for 2 weeks for work. Unfortunately back then I wasn't into photography yet. Great city and awesome people! Back then the political tension was slowly starting to rise and how it went we know today. What was your experience when you talked to the people during your trip? I remember one colleague of mine wanted to migrate to the UK, since he has family members there. Another one would like to move, but didn't had the possibility to do so. Great video and aawesome shots man! Although I have a light meter I still struggle to expose correctly with film. Do you actively use the M6 light meter or do wing it due to so many years of experience?
@whoschrischuКүн бұрын
I also was cautious about street photography amid the political atmosphere, but the locals I met told me that it's less tense and photography isn't controlled on the streets. There are still police walking around pulling people over randomly on the sidewalk for random ID checks Lastly, I actively use the M6 meter, but I still zone focus

It really annoys me when people say that the Summilux 1.4 is the same as the Summilux 1.7! Especially when they say that when you buy the Leica Q, you're essentially buying the lens, and you get the camera as a gift. But that's like saying the EOS R6 Mark II RF24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM Lens Kit costs $2300, and the RF24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z costs $3000! So that means you bought almost the same lens and got the camera for free, and even saved money! This is definitely not the same lens...

11/14/2024…two weeks ago, bought 553ELX w/A12 + Acute=$700. Mint. 50mm C= $350. A24= $225. Pro shade: $45. On and on….V cameras are cheap, C & CF lenses also. NEVER been cheaper for’Blad gear.😅

Q is a great camera but it is not weatherproof. I was in a rain in a middle of a 5 miles hike trail and I was so glad that I got the Q2 at the time. The weatherproof capability saved my ass from a potential damage from the rain and snow that day.

How did you handle transporting the exposed negatives back to the US? Did you get it hand checked to avoid scanners? I've had so many rolls ruined from modern day airport carry on scanners...
@wojt4spes11 күн бұрын
Did you push tri-x? There are some internal shots with artificial lighting, like elevator for example, hence I wonder. Must have been really slow shutter + push?

Nice vid & photo's! Japan is amazing. I'm fortunate enough to have visited twice. First time in 2010, also my first trip outside of Europe. I felt like Alice down the rabbit hole - it was quite an experience. I shot on colour film, mostly with a 40mm lens. But my favorite shots were on black and white, during my second trip, with a 50mm. I admire your work with the 28mm. it's a great match for the crowded cities in Japan!

I loved Japan, it was so disappointing coming back to San Francisco and getting on the Muni lol one thing I found out the hard way in Japan, don’t forget your film because not only is color film expensive (especially 120) it is very difficult to find in Tokyo without having to by a pack. Porta 800 (120) was $181 USD, It wasn’t until I went to Kyoto where I found lomography affordable enough to buy. Also the film camera stores in Japan were so expensive compared to the states (KEH).
@whoschrischu13 күн бұрын
Muni & BART are definitely going to disappoint after the Tokyo metro lol Asian public transpo is so efficient, but yeah Kodak being a USA product would make sense why it's cheaper in-state and exp out

Hey Chris, Great video by the way! Just wanted to ask you, I'm travelling to Japan next week ?(first time as well and very excited!!) and I was thinking of bringing my film camera. Did you get all your film rolls hand checked through customs? Or did they scan them? I've heard scanning or x-rays damage the films. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Cheers Jim
@whoschrischu13 күн бұрын
we got a first timerrr!!! I got all my film hand checked by customs, just put them in a clear plastic bag and say hand check and they're always courteous in handling it, never put it in an x-ray no matter how small (and esp if the xray looks huge, has LED lights, or looks like a jet engine)

I don't know if you have the subject's permission (if not), but I'm jealous that you can take a street photo with their face in it. Where I live, you could be sued for violating their right of publicity.
