Hi Whiggi, May I ask how do you feel Chessnut Go as a training / study board? is it too small ?
@whiggi
@whiggi 2 күн бұрын
i personally like it because its easy to move the pieces, unlike other small boards the pieces will get knocked over very easy but because of the magnetic board the pieces had no issues. as far as emulating the board vision it wont match a tournament size board. however when doing a lot of puzzles i feel its a great size. when im using a book i always use this board :)

Is it hard to rotate that board around? The main issue that I know about eboards is that you have to rotate them for which ever side you are playing on. I have seen people use lazy susan bearings to move those boards around easier. When you mount that board on something that can spin it around, is it able to spin just fine without the pieces moving that badly? Its just that I would guess a board that is square shaped would stay on the thing that spins it better, can the evo which is more rectangular accidentally tip over when spinning? Also I think I heard that the evo kind of lags when pieces move on the virtual board compared to the actual board? Like when a opponents piece moves on the virtual board it takes like a second or two to show up on the eboards LEDS?
@whiggi
@whiggi 3 күн бұрын
ill test the moving and lag :) i have a lazy susan for my pro... i used it it was alright.. too big for the evo im afraid. but i think i have another solution so ill test it out soon. for the pro i ended up getting rid of the lazy susan (i didnt like how it elevated the board higher, and moved when I bumped it during games) i didnt notice any lag when i was playing with bots.. everything was working find for me but ill keep at eye out in my tests as well.

Apologies, a slightly adjacent question, but you seem to know Chessnut inside out… is it possible, through LucasChess or another software (including the newest version of the ChessNut software itself), to solve puzzles and training sets, particular on Chessable? Most explainers are focused on gameplay only. Thanks!
@whiggi
@whiggi 4 күн бұрын
for chessable: for pro/air i dont believe its possible. though people talk about using chessnut and chessable... i have not found a way to actually have it work with the board responding.... the evo however does have a way a to use it. which I will be investigating soon :) for LucasChess: it comes with custom puzzles, load it up and set it up on the board, then play it out. inbelieve you can also upload your own puzzle set though i havent had a chance to do this yet. chessdotcom: others have said this doesnt work, however i have personally had it work where I joined puzzles and was able to set up the puzzles on the board and play it out with the board responding (im talking about the regular puzzle mode where you get the puzzle rating). no issues for me on this one

@@whiggi Thanks for these explanations. Not a big tech person, but after curating a baseline of nice chess sets (aka consuming instead of playing) I‘m trying to reduce my excuses and procrastination by now finding a nice digital set-up. The state of things strikes me as weird. Once DGT figured out boards with piece recognition through RiFid chips, the connection to the online world has been made and the rest should be a software based afterthought. And yet, here we are…. I mean, why should it not be possible to do the same thing with a tablet lying next to your Chessnut Air/Pro that can be done on the Evo. It seems to be the same technical environment. Separate but also trivially seeming issue is choosing opponent’s move output ie board LEDs (Chessnut, Millenium etc) vs non-board / computer based screen or sound output (DGT etc). DGT has beautiful (and by now very affordable) hardware but I‘m afraid they’re making the wrong software and API choices, while I am hoping ChessNut and third party developers will address aforementioned features soon. For now I‘m waiting for the pre-drilled (Chessnut sensor compatible) chess pieces I ordered (the internet is so amazing) although I haven’t pulled the trigger on the Chessnut Pro board yet, as I am still considering the Evo. But I hope (see above) the Evo features will become available to the other boards as well via software solution.

@whiggi
@whiggi 9 күн бұрын
They're decent.. As for exact strength im not really sure.. As you can see from the video they handle quite well with sudden movements, shaking, turning upside down. It was a suprise to find they are magnetic towards only the chessnut GO. I have other magnetic chess sets, and when putting the GO pieces on those boards they did not stick to at all. So chessnut have done a very interesting job with the pieces and the board magnetising together as for how they feel when playing, you dont feel like you need to add any additional stregth to lift/slide, they move quite naturally when playing.

That board is way too small to play with - let alone blitz. Chess boards have a standard size for a reason.
@JuliusBjornsson
@JuliusBjornsson 27 күн бұрын
I guess that’s a matter of taste. Of course it’s easier to play with larger boards, but that doesn’t exclude playing on a smaller one. If you were on a look out for only one eboard, the larger ones might be a better option, but this definitely fills out a need many have, i.e. the portability. You can easily grab a game, where it normally would be impossible or difficult, like at your desk at work or travelling on a train/airplane.

But there is one BIG concern regarding the board - not being able to see the lights both in direct sun or on a couldy day is a big red flag for me, and would make the board useless for me. 5 min ago I tried to play on my balcony with the Chessnut air, and had to stare at my phone the whole time which totally ruined the experience. Hi Whiggi, Dennis from the UK, surely the idea of a travelling chess set is sometimes to play outside in the sun !!! like sitting outside of my motorhome and playing a game of chess ! if I cant see the from and to LEDs its unusable ! and a lot of campsites and places have no internet connection ! a built in A.I. at different levels would be a good idea . If they had the features of the DGT centaur , rings on every square that light up and flash and you can adjust the brightness and built in A.I. when no internet is available ,plus the features the GO already has ,that would be the perfect travelling chess set , I wish a company would get everything right ,they would make a fortune !!!
@whiggi
@whiggi Ай бұрын
Hi Dennis, agreed it would be nice to get some sun :) The alternative is that you could have the phone display the opponents move, not ideal but gets the job done. Don't get me wrong though, I understand the appeal to playing outdoors, I hope a solution can be found. Main reason why I included this in the review is for transparency. Understanding some people might want this set for certain purposes, they need to know they are getting what they are after :) As for the A.I, the board uses the Chessnut App (and can be used with some other apps) which includes multiple levels of difficulty. I just checked the App but was unable to connect. When I get home from work ill check another 3rd party app that I really like and see if that works offline.
