Hi Whiggi, Dennis from the UK, surely the idea of a travelling chess set is sometimes to play outside in the sun !!! like sitting outside of my motorhome and playing a game of chess ! if I cant see the from and to LEDs its unusable ! and a lot of campsites and places have no internet connection ! a built in A.I. at different levels would be a good idea . If they had the features of the DGT centaur , rings on every square that light up and flash and you can adjust the brightness and built in A.I. when no internet is available ,plus the features the GO already has ,that would be the perfect travelling chess set , I wish a company would get everything right ,they would make a fortune !!!
@whiggi4 ай бұрын
Hi Dennis, agreed it would be nice to get some sun :) The alternative is that you could have the phone display the opponents move, not ideal but gets the job done. Don't get me wrong though, I understand the appeal to playing outdoors, I hope a solution can be found. Main reason why I included this in the review is for transparency. Understanding some people might want this set for certain purposes, they need to know they are getting what they are after :) As for the A.I, the board uses the Chessnut App (and can be used with some other apps) which includes multiple levels of difficulty. I just checked the App but was unable to connect. When I get home from work ill check another 3rd party app that I really like and see if that works offline.

@@whiggi Hi Whiggi , thank you for your reply, let me know how you get on with the other apps please. Here in the UK wither your on 3g 4g 5g the internet drops in and out quite often ! this is why I would like to see an on board A.I. built into all chess computers, then at least you would have something to fall back on ,for playing a game . best wishes Dennis.

@@dennisbourne6450 There's a new Chessnut app available (it's in Beta) but it has both Stockfish as well as Maia (with a career mode) so you can play offline only using your phone/laptop/iPad with Bluetooth, as well as third party apps like White Pawn, Chess Dojo etc.

Chessnut can play tournaments and puzzles on Lichess? And probably also puzzles? Is it also possible two lichess player play on it? Means physical in the same room at the same board?
@whiggi25 күн бұрын
I believe they can play tournaments.. I am not a Lichess user when it comes to connecting e-boards. Puzzles I have done on Chess.com without any issues. So I believe they should work on Lichess and can test it out later. As for two players playing on the board physically.. They can play OTB without an issue, and the board can record a PGN for later review.. However, if you mean two accounts also playing at the same time sharing the one board so that you have a record of the game on Lichess, im not sure thats a thing.

Great review and the board looks awesome. But there is one BIG concern regarding the board - not being able to see the lights both in direct sun or on a couldy day is a big red flag for me, and would make the board useless for me. 5 min ago I tried to play on my balcony with the Chessnut air, and had to stare at my phone the whole time which totally ruined the experience. Wish they would fix these lights in future updates on the Go board, maybe adjustable how bright the lights can be, so the board could be used as intended.
@whiggi4 ай бұрын
glad you liked the review :) in regards to resolving the light issue..i hope so. im not sure about the airs visability. but the Go with the green lights I could see it... though, no where nesr as easy as indoors :(

@@whiggi I couldn't see anything on the air board regarding the lights 🤷🏻♂ Was thinking about purchasing the Go version IF the lights was VERY clear outside in all type of weather. Until they make something like that, I'll just keep playing inside on my Pro board.

YEA WHIGGI! Loved the review buddy. This looks intriguing. The outdoor issue was a little disappointing but in general i'd say this a great set to carry around on the off chance that you'll meet someone with the same love of the game. And I love how you chose one of the most difficult mates as a "simple" endgame for your example. Well done, my friend. And good job resisting the temptress. We have got to stay focused brothers! Great video, buddy! Keep sending them my way!

Thanks mate! It is a good set to travel around for sure. I wouldn't be too keen on taking it to the beach, and was hesitant to put it on the same as there was alot of sand...though I don't think it would have been an issue, it was pretty well sealed up. I could definitely see myself using it at a Cafe though!

Thanks for this review. Thanks for being honest about the outdoor play. If I grab it to add to my e-board collection it needs to be significantly under $180US. Where did you hear the price? Several people have asked and they get the answer that it has not been decided yet (that coming directly from Chessnut themselves).
@whiggi4 ай бұрын
as far as i know, no one has been told the price. Chessnut hasnt released that info or the exact release date. lets hope it hits your target! i asked chessnut as well and was told i could say it'll be under 180, but as for the price yet they couldnt tell me the exact amount at that time

Thanks for the amazing videos on the chessnut go. Super interesting. I have a DGT centaur but feel like playing with friends online without looking at screens. Would you recommend chessnut air or chessnut go ? Does the go feel too small ?
@whiggi4 ай бұрын
I recommend the Go, simply because ive never used the Air :) But looking at the air, it seems like a bit of a headache to transport around. The Go is really well packaged Im about to release a video with some gameplay on the Go so you can see it in action on chess.com. How strong are the magnets??
@whiggi3 ай бұрын
They're decent.. As for exact strength im not really sure.. As you can see from the video they handle quite well with sudden movements, shaking, turning upside down. It was a suprise to find they are magnetic towards only the chessnut GO. I have other magnetic chess sets, and when putting the GO pieces on those boards they did not stick to at all. So chessnut have done a very interesting job with the pieces and the board magnetising together as for how they feel when playing, you dont feel like you need to add any additional stregth to lift/slide, they move quite naturally when playing.

If you don’t plan going anywhere they have the cheap air and the beautiful Air+. This is called go, but you should go and play inside? Or go but make sure your ride is extra smooth?
@whiggi4 ай бұрын
I wouldnt mind taking it with me when I go out to cafe's. I'm not one for playing on the phone much, do prefer a board. You are right though, from what I hear, and the photos, the Air+ is a nice looking board, have not had a chance to see it in person though.
@TFPMadcow4 ай бұрын
@@whiggi if you are looking for a smaller “analysis board” sized, rather that full tournament size board, that is so sweet. I’d suggest you to check it out: full Chessnut electronics, small footprint, nice feeling (and lookin) wood. I think you could play in a park, with the same light challenge I guess ( I never tried with mine, I play at my desk) but of course never on a bus/ plane as the pieces have no magnets.
@TFPMadcow4 ай бұрын
@@whiggimy other doubt is: when I travel I generally do tactics on a screen. Or go thru Chessable lines, on screen again. Those work really well to kill time on a flight, while keeping your chess sharp, and you only carry stuff you’d carry anyway. I fly quite a bit for my job, but I don’t really see myself pulling out a Go board like that to play, I already have plenty of elettronics to go thru controls and stuff…. I wonder how real this Go use case is, even if aesthetically I like the tiny board a lot I think it would spend it’s entire life in closets.

I’m not sure who this is for. If you play blitz on a train/bus/plane/whatever, isn’t it much more likely that you play on a tablet/laptop/mobile?

So why can't you just use a travel set or a normal board and just use your phone to play? Ie lichess on your phone, and just move the pieces from your phone to your own board? I just don't get the point in this, yeah I do if it had an engine built in, but it's basically just a board where you have to move from your phone and play the moves out on this?? Why not just save yourself some money and just use your own set and board and play from your phone??
