My grandmother used to live in Longstone, not far from Monsal Dale. I loved playing and exploring all around there as a kid, even up on the viaduct way before it became a trail. Her grandfather was 'station master' (as he told me) at Monsal Dale station until it closed about 1965, he retired then in his mid 70s! He was not actually a station master, just a porter, but being the only railway employee there it counted as station master.

Toulouse was first called the "Pink City" at the end of the 19th century by poets drawing analogies to flowers, and later, in the early 20th century, by the tourism office, which portrayed the city as a figure of feminine beauty. At that time, however, the city was actually more white, as it had been repainted white in the late 18th century to imitate Paris. The white paint was removed in the mid-20th century, and the reddish-orange hue of the bricks became the reason to retain the nickname "Pink City," even though the facades aren't really pink (thankfully)!
