Its nice to see those cats running. My grandpa hand all restored. It had 3 inch channel iron with rubber on it bolted to the tracks to run in parades. It got sold at an auction a few years ago not sure where it went. Yeah he had quite a few different old caterpillars. He had a 1929 30hp , he had a 65 and a 60 I believe a D7 without a blade and then he also had a D6 with a blade amongst other equipment that old 29 was a hand start gas engine. It was always my favorite for many years. The tracks went bumpy bump only to find out that the pads were on backwards. Don’t know how that happened, but it got fixed. He used to restore everything mostly all by himself everything from old cars to old tractors and old trucks

I have been watching your videos for about a ear. When I started I even went back and watched the Lefty videos from the beginning. But now I am so confused with all the tractors you keep referring to. Would you be able to do guide or summary as to what is what with the tractors?

I had what looked like fiberglass insulation in the bottom of my D4 radiator.
@lifeafterourloss
@lifeafterourloss Күн бұрын
Sounds like a "farmer stop leak" Dad and I looked at a D4C. It had sticks shoved in the holes of the radiator core. In theory the wood would swell and it would plug up the leak. Apparently it worked because the radiator was still full. Then again, it could have been just temporary that somebody forgot to remove. 😁

V out the head crack, preheat head to 500 or 600F. Apply and fill with Allstate Number 11 alloy using oxy-acetylene torch, cover/wrap and slow cool.. Shape the fill with die grinder carbide tips, .. Then do the usual machine shop valve seats and guides. Works a charm. saved many rare blocks and heads over the decades with #11FC.

@jefflormans5441 I worked for the United States Antarctic Program. It's complicated, but most everyone that works for the program is a contractor. My job was supervisor of the heavy equipment department at McMurdo station. It was not uncommon to have flights delayed for weeks or even months. As a full-time employee I would take a bus from my hotel to the building near the Antarctic center across from the airport. The bus stop was near Spitfire Plaza. I would then work for the day. On the weekends we would rent a car and travel the South Island. Sometimes I would stay a little while longer after my deployment. My favorite place was Akaroa. But I also enjoyed the museum and Botanic Gardens in Christ Church. In Antarctica my department always worked very closely with the New Zealand Scott Base. I've spent quite a bit of time there. I love the Australian and Kiwi culture! Of course as an American I had to visit "Burger Fuel" quite a few times, 😂. Never could get used to having beats on a hamburger though.

That would warry me a Cat model diesel engine that has a constant problem with Cracked heads. This would send alarm bells to me of an inferior product put out by Cat. Am I nailng it or is there a problem that causes the cracks to be prevalent in these heads like coolant left in the block in winter? That means users' fault.
@lifeafterourloss
@lifeafterourloss Күн бұрын
To be honest I would chalk up most of this to operator or owner error. If they're maintained properly and the stacks are kept covered none of it should be an issue. I think neglect and abuse is more of a common thread with the head problem we have found. After over 80 years it's hard for me to blame anything definitively. 👍

Do you ever send in oil samples for analysis? I send them in every offload especially my new C32 been having major fuel dilution issues from the injectors. Could keep you from getting too far down the wrong road. You can even see metals in the oil indicating failure of different components
