I have a Beretta 9000s 9mm I bought new in 2002. Everybody seems to hate this gun. I absolutely love it. It fits my hand like it was tailor made for me. I like the ambi safety/decocker and mag release, the fact that it is hammer fired (you couldn't give me a striker fired gun) I like the sights and the trigger. I want a heavy trigger on anything but a dedicated target pistol. And the little flip down extension on the magazine that allows me to get three fingers on the grips. I have put over 5000 rounds through it and never had a problem. It is still my home defense weapon, I keep it laying on the table beside my bed. I normally don't like any plastic gun, but I'll make an exception for the 9000s. It even looks great. Most modern semi autos are very square and blocky looking. The 9000s actually has style. I would buy another one if they still made it. I suspect that the 9mm version will be longer lasting and more reliable than the .40, since 9mm puts less stress on the gun. Nothing has ever broken on mine.

I've seen hangfires before when the cylinder was rotated to the side. It's not as bad as you might think. Obviously not ideal to let it happen but the balls of lead are very soft and after wiping it off, you can barely tell it happened. As many others have stated, you don't need a patch for the round ball in a revolver. A lubricated fiber wad is okay or you can just add some lube to the front of the cylinder.

Use a Shield 40 performance center as a carry pistol and outdoors handgun. My factory ammo load is the American Eagle 180gr FMJ. It is good on small game too like grouse and rabbits yet big enough for hunting at close range distances.
@theidahorifleman7 күн бұрын
Definitely have to advise against using FMJ as a personal defense round. While the application is there in other instances (military using FMJ as an example), as an individual, you are held liable for every shot (and over penetration) you take. It doesn't matter if you stop the threat, if you hit an innocent bystander behind the threat.

That is correct, though, the energy of .40 S&W is more likely to be in the 400-500 ft-lbs range. It does out-perform 9mm +P and matches with 45 ACP +P, although some brands of 45 ACP push their +P up to 550 ft-lbs.

@@theidahorifleman Negative Rifle man: Buffalo Bore, Underwood, Atomic,and Double Tap all produce 40sw. loads that exceed 550ft.lbs of energy. Their 155grn loads are around 588ft.lbs from a 4" barrel. Which brings us to efficiency; as 40sw. at 35,000psi( same as 9mm.) is able to burn more powder per inch of barrel than 9mm. or 45acp.( 45acp. is only 20,000psi) To bad everyone was focusing on 180grn 40sw. loads. LEO records for the 165grn. one shot stop percentage was 96% 135grn. loads would have (and perhaps will again) achieved similar performance with less perceived recoil and faster recovery( although one shot stops don't really require follow ups or double taps)

40S&W was a hype job from the start. Born of marketing genius that exploited hysteria over an FBI shooting that highlighted Feeb Failure but was blamed on one of 11 wounds that killed the offender but not "quick enough". The "Fotay" is a decent choice in a large pistol & is more likely to deform in tissue than 45ACP. That said, "time has passed it by".
@mkshffr493623 күн бұрын
Black talon was a fabulous design killed by nonsensical political hysteria. I chose the 40 as it is a nearly perfect compromise of effectiveness, size, capacity, cost of hardware, and shootability. It runs at the same pressure as the 9mm me-too in the same size pistol but with a larger heavier bullet. If I was going to put up with that level of blast I wanted the extra margin of that bigger bullet. In the event of HP failure I prefer the larger hole. Before deciding on the 40 I watched many, many tests and the 165 HPs were consistent performers across many brands with quite manageable recoil even for old guys with arthritis like me. The 10mm is unnecessarily powerful for my needs and comes at the price of higher pressure, blast, and grip size. The latter is an issue for me as I have short stubby fingers that make trigger reach and grip circumference an important consideration. If by chance I ever need more power than the 40 I already have a 44 magnum that way surpasses even full power 10mm. I like the lower pressure of the 45 acp but the monetary cost of an equivalent DA/SA pistol was significantly higher. I will probably get one someday but in the meantime 44 specials in the mangum will cover that niche. Heck even 44 Russian cowboy loads give near 22 LR levels of blast but with better damage results then the old small bores. So for me the 40 absolutely serves a valuable purpose. I do get a kick out of the John Wick wannabes that call it the short and weak but get all excited about the even weaker 36 parabellum. Go figure. It reminds me of the guys who disrespect the PCC and say that if you want something more than a pistol you must ignore the carbine's virtues and go right to an earsplitting high powered varmint rifle.

Liberty defense goes through 3A body armor and so does Underwood Ammo extreme penetrators. I've never had Black Talon go through 3A body armor. I think all the rumors were started by the doctors because you're afraid of getting cut on the rounds of when they were moving them from somebody's body.

.40 s&w seems to falter in the fact that it has no purpose/use case that 9mm or 10mm or good old .45auto already covers for less money, and more capacity or stoping power.
@losi8ightyew20 күн бұрын
It's all in how you view it dude, if you view it glass half empty as you just did or you can view it glass half full as I do, I mean it does technically have a purpose, modern .40 is quite a bit more powerful than both 9mm and .45...so in a way, kinda makes those 2 obsolete in my eyes. you can throw 9mm weight bullets much faster than even +p+ 9mm will throw them, we're talking 500-600ft lbs+ out of a 9mm sized weapon..it can also utilize heavy almost .45 weight bullets but with more capacity also rendering that one obsolete ...If you need more power step up to 10mm or a wheelgun...That's how I feel about it. So it's purpose to me, it absolutely poops on 9mm and .45 making them 2 cartridges useless..You should really check out some modern .40 loadings as it's been made into quite the hot rod now lol
@jebkermen608720 күн бұрын
@@losi8ightyew I did not know that .40 had so much more unused potential. I judged it off of the narrow selection of loadings presented in this video. But if your right about its potential, then I might too become a fan of the .40 thanks.
@henrys313819 күн бұрын
@@jebkermen6087Tools and Targets does a lot of .40 comparisons. The caliber debate today is pointless, but if you want to get into specifics then the arguments that 9mm outdoes the .40 is not true if you compare a wide variety of loadings. .40 bullets are usually heavier, so you're going to get more consistent penetration and flowering if it's hotter than a 9mm load, which isn't that difficult to achieve. If you want to compare with the .45 then .40 the rounds trump its capacity, power, and at least in my experience affordability. Nothing matters though if you have a weapon and can send a reliable defensive round in a vulnerable place. It comes down to preference, but .40 is probably the best of several worlds for a lot more than people think.

If you are shooting supers only go with 16 inch, carbine gas for best ballistics you can get out of the cartridge. Short barrel with pistol gas system if you're trying to be quiet about it.
